The wise say: 'Abandoning what should be abandoned and relying on what should be relied upon is the higher training in concentration (Sanskrit: Adhicitta-śikṣā). Therefore, one should cultivate the union of calm abiding and insight. To abandon the root of all faults—ignorance—through realizing the true nature of all phenomena, and properly adopting and rejecting, this is wisdom, the higher training in wisdom (Sanskrit: Adhiprajñā-śikṣā). Therefore, one should diligently cultivate it. The three vows are the Prātimokṣa vow, the Bodhisattva vow, and the Secret Mantra vow. The Prātimokṣa vow is to abandon harming all sentient beings in body and mind. The Bodhisattva vow is to constantly benefit all beings through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. The Secret Mantra vow is to purely keep all the vows as promised. The Prātimokṣa vow is further divided into the vows of lay practitioners and the vows of renunciates. The former includes the Upāsaka vow and the Upavāsa vow, and the latter includes the Śrāmaṇera vow and the Bhikṣu vow. Completely abandoning killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicating drinks for the duration of one's life is called the complete Upāsaka vow. Abandoning killing, stealing, sexual activity, lying, alcohol, untimely food, high and large beds, singing, dancing, etc., for one day and one night is the Upavāsa vow. Abandoning killing, stealing, sexual activity, lying, alcohol, singing, dancing, garlands, high and large beds, untimely food, and accepting gold and silver, etc., for the duration of one's life is the Śrāmaṇera vow. Abandoning the four root downfalls, the thirteen Saṃghāvaśeṣa offenses, the thirty Niḥsargika Pāyantika offenses, the ninety Pāyantika offenses, the four Prātideśanīya offenses, and the one hundred and twelve Duḥkṛta offenses, etc., is called the Bhikṣu vow. The Samādhi vow and the Anāsrava vow are both included in the higher training in concentration. Having understood these various distinctions, one should strive to keep the vows that one is able to keep. The Bodhisattva vow is like the way the Buddhas of the past kept the precepts after generating Bodhicitta. I will also follow in their footsteps, and after making this promise, I will practice accordingly. Whether one is a renunciate or a layperson, on top of the original precepts, one should properly adopt and reject the four black and white dharmas (referring to negative and positive actions), constantly practice the six Pāramitās, possess the four immeasurables of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, with a virtuous intention, accomplish the benefit of others through the four Saṃgrahavastus of generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency, and for the sake of benefiting others, even the suffering of Avīci hell is regarded as happiness, the actions of body, speech, and mind...'
