The suffering of excrement, urine, odor, poison, and filth, as well as the suffering from consuming unclean food and drink. Even if a human life lasts for five hundred years, it will inevitably face death. Poverty and destitution, even if sought diligently, are difficult to overcome, and the suffering is as boundless as that of hell. Even a small non-virtuous act can lead to rebirth as an animal. Inhabiting the ocean, fish and crocodiles, etc., the large ones eat the small ones, and small worms can penetrate the bodies of large fish. In particular, the *Nagas* (serpent deities) suffer daily from hail like grains of sand, which burns their flesh and bones completely. The fierce *Garudas* (mythical birds) devour them, beings kill each other, are ignorant and mute, and full of suffering. Scattered corpses are also killed by cruel people for their flesh, blood, and skin. They are tormented with red-hot iron, iron hooks, etc., and suffer in *samsara* (cyclic existence) without freedom. Lifespan is uncertain, short as a moment, long as an *aeon*. The size of the body is uncertain, small as a dust particle, large as many *yojanas* (ancient Indian unit of distance), all are the basis of suffering. Relying on the power of contaminated virtue, even in the higher realms, if one obtains a human body, there is the suffering of protecting what one has, and the suffering of seeking what one does not have, as well as the fear of being born from the womb, and the suffering of aging as one's age changes, the suffering of sickness as the elements change, the suffering of death as life changes, the suffering of being tormented by hateful enemies, the suffering of being separated from beloved relatives, and the suffering of seeking desired objects through various means but not obtaining them. The suffering of heat and cold due to seasonal changes, and the suffering of hunger and thirst when lacking food and drink, the suffering of fatigue from traveling on the road, and the endless suffering of fighting and so on. The *Asuras* (demigods), due to jealousy and competitiveness, when fighting with the *Devas* (gods), are struck by the *Vajra* (thunderbolt) of the *Deva* (god) king, their bodies are cut into countless pieces, and even the *Rölmtsho* (lake of enjoyment) appears as blood, full of suffering. The *Devas* (gods) of the desire realm are intoxicated and distracted by desire, and when inauspicious signs of death appear, their suffering is far greater than that of hell, facing death, falling, and intense torment. Even in the form and formless realms, being intoxicated by *samadhi* (meditative absorption), they eventually fall back down. Since they do not have control over birth and death, everything is filled with the suffering of conditioned existence. In this great prison of the three realms of *samsara* (cyclic existence), wherever one is born, there is no opportunity for happiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as there is no fragrance in filth, so one should contemplate the faults of samsara (cyclic existence). Having gone to hell again and again, the molten copper that has been drunk is said to be more than the measure of the four great oceans. Due to the power of miserliness, when one goes to the world of the pretas (hungry ghosts), the unbearable suffering of hunger and thirst, poverty and destitution, is experienced again and again, yet the effort is fruitless. When one becomes a domestic animal such as a dog or pig, the unclean, putrid, and rotten things that are eaten are more than the measure of Mount Meru. Although one has gone through so much, it is meaningless, only hardship and suffering. Even if one becomes a human, due to hatred and attachment, the tears shed from fighting and quarreling, from being separated and weeping, are said to be more than Mount Meru and the ocean. Even if one possesses the wealth of the seven precious jewels and experiences the great bliss of a chakravartin (universal monarch), one is never satisfied, and due to the power of time, one becomes a servant who sweeps unclean places. Even if one experiences the pleasure of dwelling in a delightful mansion with a host of goddesses, one is never satiated, and due to the power of karma, one experiences crying and wailing in a burning iron house. Even if one obtains the bliss of being free from desire in the form and formless realms such as Brahma, one will again become firewood for the fire of Avici (uninterrupted hell), and experience unbearable suffering. There is no place that has not been given or inhabited in the past, and there is no virtue or vice, happiness or suffering, that has not been done or experienced in the past. There is no class of beings that has not been born or gone to in the past, and there is no sentient being that has not been fought with or associated with in the past. These appearances of enemies and relatives, servants and masters, are reversed in other existences. Who can trust in this uncertain samsara? Even if one is cared for with affection and accumulates abundant retinues and possessions with effort, they do not follow one at the time of death, only one's actions follow like a shadow. Even though countless complete Buddhas have passed away, cherishing all sentient beings as their only child, those bound by the noose of their own karma have not been able to escape from the prison of samsara. If one were to apply just a fraction of the effort put into the meaningless activities of samsara, which have great hardship and little benefit, to the sacred Dharma, how could one not achieve lasting happiness? Therefore, do not be attached to temporary happiness, but strive to practice the sacred Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
