When asked about the earth, (the venerable one) showed the order of arising of the four elements. Regarding the method of meditating on the meaning of these: Jetsun Tsemö (name of a master) said, 'Then, as a branch of the cause, the four arise from the four seeds. Having color, shape, and characteristics. Starting from wind, meditate in descending order.' Therefore, each of the four elements is meditated on through five aspects: seed, name, color, shape, and characteristic. Furthermore, from the purity of suchness, the habit of the impure wind of oneself, together with the mind's appearance, arises in the form of the letter ཡཾ་ (Tibetan, यं, yam, wind) as the seed. 3-408 It appears as the mandala of wind, which is the name. Its color is blue, and its shape is like an arc of light. The characteristic is that it possesses the nature of holding and supreme wind. Marked by ཡཾ་ (Tibetan, यं, yam, wind) and a banner. Similarly, in order, the seed is རཾ་ (Tibetan, रं, ram, fire), the name is the mandala of fire, the color is red, the shape is like a triangular offering cake with the tip pointing downwards, the three sides having the nature of fire. Marked by རཾ་ (Tibetan, रं, ram, fire) and a burning triangle. Above it, the seed is བཾ་ (Tibetan, वं, vam, water), the name is the mandala of water, the color is white, the shape is round, like a mandala, the characteristic is the nature of water. Marked by four half-steps. Above it, the seed is ལཾ་ (Tibetan, लं, lam, earth), the name is the mandala of earth, the color is yellow, the shape is square, with a vajra. The characteristic is marked by ལཾ་ (Tibetan, लं, lam, earth) and half of a three-pointed vajra in the four corners. The basis for purification of these is: taking one as an example, the formation, existence, and destruction of the outer world, and the birth, existence, and death of sentient beings, all depend on the four elements, therefore the basis for purification is the main one. Regarding the method of making it the path: first, for each of the mandala of wind, etc., as mentioned above, all the formation, existence, and destruction of the outer and inner depend on the four elements. 3-409 Furthermore, at the time of the formation and destruction of the outer world and sentient beings, all the wind is absorbed into the form of the seed letter ཡཾ་ (Tibetan, यं, yam, wind). From that complete transformation, the mandala of wind, its nature is equanimity, is immeasurable, or the goddess Yungdrungma (name of a female deity in Tibetan Buddhism), is the nature of the complete purification of wind, thus meditate. Furthermore, think that she is the actual goddess Yungdrungma of the fruition, thus meditate. Meditating in this way, accumulating merit, purifying obscurations, from the blessing becoming the path, and being attached to the fruition Yungdrungma, entering into the meditation on the mandala of the path wind, therefore the path entered with attachment, with such a cause and effect relationship, when will the nature of equanimity be attained, the fruition of Yungdrungma, the complete purification of wind, will not be mistaken, therefore the relationship will not deceive.
