Not knowing parents, not recognizing their kindness, who in this world is more foolish than me? Knowing but abandoning parents who are as heavy as mountains with kindness, there is no one in this world more shameless and without a sense of shame than me. It is necessary to repay kindness, to repay kindness with kindness. These people are now uncomfortable in body and mind, suffering from pain and the cause of pain, which is truly pitiful. If these people could have happiness and the cause of happiness in their body, speech, and mind, how wonderful would that be! Practice loving-kindness earnestly. If they could be free from suffering and the cause of suffering, how wonderful would that be! Practice compassion earnestly. These parents and sentient beings, although they want to get rid of suffering, they run towards suffering; although they want to get happiness, they destroy their own happiness like enemies because of ignorance. As the sutra says: 'Although they do not want suffering, they enjoy the cause of suffering, which is non-virtue; although they want happiness, they turn away from the cause of happiness, which is virtue.' How sad! For sentient beings deluded by ignorance, generate a long-lasting heart of compassion. Now, how can we benefit them? Liberating them from the ocean of suffering in samsara and placing them in the state of liberation and omniscience is the only way to truly benefit them. But now I do not have this ability, nor do Brahma and Indra, who are stronger than me. Even those who are stronger than them, belonging to the ranks of the noble ones, such as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, do not have it. So who has this ability? Only the perfectly enlightened Buddha, who possesses all aspects of wisdom, has it. With each Dharma teaching spoken by the Buddha, and with each ray of light emitted, countless sentient beings can be liberated in an instant. Therefore, now I must, in any case, for the benefit of my parents and sentient beings, in order to obtain the supreme and precious state of the perfectly enlightened Buddha, on this seat, or in this life, or in the bardo, or even in the next life, I must obtain it! Make such a vow. In order to obtain this state, one must practice the true Dharma; there is no other way. And the opportunity to practice the Dharma is only available to those who have a human body endowed with the eighteen freedoms and advantages. This human body with freedoms and advantages is difficult to obtain, possesses qualities, and is easy to perish. Among them, difficult to obtain means difficult to obtain in terms of quantity. As the sutra says: 'Hell is like the dust of the great earth, hungry ghosts are like... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He said, 'Hailstorms are like violent storms, animals are like the mash of brewing alcohol, and heaven is like dust on a fingernail.' Furthermore, the number of sentient beings in the bardo (intermediate state) is countless. For example, if an animal dies in the summer and its corpse is left for seven days, it will be filled with worms. Similarly, if two, three, four, or even a hundred or a thousand are left, however many are left, that many will be filled with worms. Unless the conditions for birth are not met, there is no end to the sentient beings who will be born. Therefore, obtaining a human body from among these beings is as rare as a star in the daytime. Moreover, the difficulty of obtaining a human body through analogy and the difficulty of obtaining it through its essence should be understood from other sources and practiced. If one obtains it, its merits are inconceivable. If one does not deceive oneself, one can quickly attain the state of Buddhahood. As it is said in the 'Bodhicharyavatara' (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life) by the great master Gyalsé Zhiwa Lha (Śāntideva) from India: 'I am born into a race that can distinguish between benefit and harm. If I do not abandon the practice of Bodhi, why should I not attain Bodhi?' Therefore, one should understand this. Furthermore, one should think like this: What is rare in the world? The wish-fulfilling jewel is rare. It has eight qualities: it fulfills the needs of sentient beings, it does not appear without prayer, it appears when prayed to, it appears on time, it appears appropriately, it is inexhaustible, it is without thought, and it does not expect repayment. Although its merits are inconceivable, it cannot produce unsurpassed Bodhi. If one attains unsurpassed Bodhi, all appearances are like wish-fulfilling jewels, even the spit that is spat out can turn into a wish-fulfilling jewel. Therefore, such unsurpassed Bodhi can be attained through a human body, so it is said to have greater merit than a wish-fulfilling jewel. As it is said in the 'Letter of Encouragement': 'Obtaining a human body can cross the ocean of samsara (cycle of rebirth), and it accomplishes the seed of Bodhi—virtue. It has greater merit than a wish-fulfilling jewel. Who would waste this rare human body?' Therefore, having obtained this priceless human body, it is a pity if one does not practice virtuous Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
