He said, 'Even the suffering caused by being stabbed violently with three hundred sharp instruments is not comparable to even the slightest part of the suffering of hell; it cannot be endured or borne.' So, what kind of suffering is even greater than that? Although there are many types of hells, here I will briefly discuss the suffering of the hot hells, which are relevant to us. In the hot hells, beings are seized by the servants of Yama (death, 阎摩), and placed on a burning iron ground. They are pierced with burning iron skewers from their lower body up to the crown of their head, so that the entire inside of their body is filled with fire. The internal organs, such as the heart, sizzle and crackle on the iron ground like saliva being spat on it. Smoke rises from the pores of their skin, and red flames blaze from their eyes and other sensory organs. Even more intensely hot are the Very Hot Hell and the Avici Hell (无间地狱), where the suffering is so extreme that it cannot be endured for even a moment. So, when such suffering befalls them, will they die and quickly be liberated? That is not the case. Even if they experience such unbearable suffering for hundreds of millions of eons, they will not die until their negative karma is exhausted. As it says in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'Even if such unbearable suffering is experienced for hundreds of millions of eons, one will not die until one's non-virtue is exhausted.' Therefore, we have no guarantee that we will not suffer such pain ourselves. And the causes of suffering, such as anger and other non-virtuous actions, are committed by us endlessly every day. Therefore, if we tremble at the mere hearing of the suffering of hell, how can we possibly endure it if we experience it ourselves? So, is it enough to liberate only oneself from these sufferings of samsara (轮回)? That is not the case. As Jetsun Rinpoche Drakpa Gyaltsen (杰尊仁波切扎巴坚赞) said in his song: 'All beings of the three realms are my parents. To leave my parents in the midst of suffering, while I desire happiness, is shameful!' There is not a single being in the three realms who has not been our parent. We ourselves have wandered in this samsara, offering our bodies and lives to our mothers countless times. For example, even if we counted the entire earth with balls the size of juniper berries, we could not count the number of mothers. As it says in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'The number of mothers is so great that even if we counted the entire earth with balls the size of juniper berries, we could not count them.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Even the earth will change,' it is said. Therefore, there is no sentient being who has not been a parent. And being a parent is not just once, but many times. The continuum of a single sentient being, having drunk the milk that I have not made, if these milks are gathered together, it is said to be more than the water of the four great oceans. As the Lord of Yoga said: 'Who has not been my mother, and drunk my milk? Even the water of the four oceans, does not have that much.' It is said. Whenever one becomes a parent, they gradually protect from countless harms, give immeasurable benefits, and are purely benefactors. Now, the kindness of the mother who gives me this body is also inconceivable. From the time I first entered the womb until before I was born, she avoided food and behavior that were harmful to me, and practiced food and behavior that were beneficial, so that I would not die. After being born, when my body could not take care of itself, my language could not express meaning, and my mind could not distinguish between what to take and what to leave, when I existed like a worm, the loving mother warmed me with her body temperature, gave me sweet milk, looked at me with loving eyes, and called me by sweet names. Even if I put unclean things on my mother, she would not dislike it, but would clean it up. She fed me delicious food, and protected me from all fears such as fire, water, and cliffs. When I could not say 'Father', she taught me to say 'Father'; when I could not say 'Mother', she taught me to say 'Mother', and taught me to take and leave all things. I stay inside, she suffers outside; I stay outside, she suffers inside. In short, the mother is like her own heart falling out, and she is unwilling to separate for even a moment. She worries that I cannot become a human being, and even if I become a human being, she worries that I am not sociable, and even if I am sociable, she worries that I will not live long. The mother uses the food and wealth accumulated through hard work, unable to offer to the Three Jewels, unable to give to beggars, and unable to satisfy her own needs for food and clothing, but gives everything to me at once, without any stinginess or attachment, thinking that my achievement is her achievement. Loving mother, I am able to meet the Dharma, all thanks to your kindness. Not only that, even if I become a Buddha, the root is the kindness of the mother.' Just like this, all other sentient beings are the same, there is not one who has not been a mother. Once they become mothers, regardless of the length of time, they have all received the same kindness. Therefore, to put these benefactors in suffering, and to seek happiness alone, is so meaningless!
