The supreme master of logic, Dharmakīrti, cited fourteen points from the Abhidharmasamuccaya (Compendium of Abhidharma) and ten from the Nyāyabindu (Drop of Reasoning), totaling about twenty-four arguments from these texts. Now, to explain a bit about the nature of these refutations, first is the refutation of 'meeting and not meeting being the same': For example, regarding the argument 'Sound, is impermanent, because it is produced by effort,' the opponent would say: 'If this reason (hetu) meets with what is to be proven (sādhya), then it cannot prove what is to be proven, because if the reason meets with what is to be proven, if what is to be proven is already established, then there is no need for the meeting to prove it; if what is to be proven is not established, then the reason also becomes unestablished because it meets with it, just like a river meeting the ocean. If this is admitted, then what is to be proven cannot be proven, because the reason itself is not established. Also, if the reason does not meet with what is to be proven, then it is not a prover, because it does not meet with what is to be proven.' This refutation is called the refutation of 'meeting and not meeting being the same'. The refutation of 'reason being the same' is, regarding the previous argument, the opponent would say: 'Which comes first, the reason or what is to be proven? If the reason comes first, then the reason cannot prove what is to be proven, because when the reason appears, what is to be proven has not yet appeared. If what is to be proven comes first, then the reason also cannot prove it, because when what is to be proven appears, the reason has not yet been established. If both appear simultaneously, then there is no need for the reason to prove it, because it is already established like the thing to be proven, just like the horns of a cow appearing simultaneously.' This refutation is considered the refutation of 'reason being the same,' a way of rebuttal. Both of these refutations, whether they are intellectual defects or defects in meaning, are like refutations that arise from hesitation due to the incompleteness of the three characteristics (tri-rūpa). And the refutation of defects in meaning is the refutation of stating the unestablished. The refutation of 'permanence being the same' is, regarding the assertion 'Sound is impermanent,' the opponent would say: 'Sound, is permanent, because it possesses impermanence, because the nature of things, once obtained, does not change.' This refutation is considered the refutation of 'permanence being the same.' This is like a refutation that points out the defects of the assertion. The refutation of 'unsaid being the same' is, regarding the previous example 'Sound, is impermanent, because it is produced by effort,' the opponent would say: 'In the previously stated argument, the reason cannot prove what is to be proven, because that reason does not exist.' This refutation is considered the refutation of 'unsaid being the same.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, this refutation also appears to be an unestablished refutation, because since there was no prior basis, the basis cannot be established. How can it not be established? Because the debater, having determined impermanence from the basis of effort-produced, then states an acceptable basis to the opponent. Or, it is like an incomplete example of a basis, because the entire meaning of the basis is disputed. The case of 'similar to unborn' is that, after stating the previous case, the opponent proposes: sound, as the subject, should be impermanent prior to utterance or effort, because it is effort-produced prior to that. Or, sound, as the subject, should be permanent, because it is not produced from effort. This statement is considered a subsequent conclusion similar to the 'unborn' case. To this, the former inference is like an apparent unestablished refutation, and the latter is like an apparent uncertain refutation. The case of 'similar to result' is that, regarding the previous basis, the opponent proposes that the effort-produced basis is not valid, because the effort-production of sound is not present in the example of a pot. If the effort-production of a pot is stated as the basis, then it is not established in sound. This refutation is considered a subsequent conclusion similar to the 'result'. This also varies in three ways according to the intention of the refuter: 'The action of the pot is not present in sound,' which is a refutation arguing non-establishment, because it is a refutation arguing that the establishing basis of effort-production is not established. The basis, i.e., neither permanent nor impermanent, is a refutation arguing non-commonality, because it is a refutation arguing by excluding the basis from the subject and preventing both sides. Tibetans consider 'similar to result' as understanding similarity, so it requires the subsequent conclusion of the result and the subsequent conclusion similar to it, because it requires a similar locus and a similar property. Saying these are foolish nonsense, because the teacher Dignāga said: 'The word 'similar' is a summary of all subsequent conclusions.' Furthermore, if each of the twenty-four subsequent conclusions had a similar locus, then there would be forty-eight subsequent conclusions, so wise people would laugh upon hearing this, and there are many such cases among those who aspire to be wise these days. The case of 'similar in property' is: for example, sound is impermanent, because it is produced by effort. The dissimilar example is like space. The opponent, using space as a similar example, proposes that sound, as the subject, should be permanent, because it is similar to space and non-corporeal things. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
