Or, if there is no thorough refutation, but a distraction with cunning means, then it belongs to a lack of confidence, without establishing or refuting the argument through debate, which is a refutation without stating the parts of the argument. Likewise, it should be clearly understood that for the debater, it is to state the non-argumentative parts, and for the refuter, to understand the principle of not pointing out errors. Accepting the intention is just as it is said. 3-643 Admitting the fault on one's own side and incidentally pointing out the fault on the other side is accepting the intention. For example, if you say: 'You, the possessor of dharma, are a thief, because you are a man.' If the refuter does not deny the fault of being a thief himself, but says: 'You too, the possessor of dharma, are a thief, because you are a man.' And the refuter does not eliminate the fault of being a thief himself, but attributes it to others, then in effect, he has admitted that he is a thief and attributes the fault to others, therefore, the refuter accepts the debater's bad conclusion and attributes it to others, which is considered a refutation of accepting the intention. If it is not so, if the debater knows that this argument is uncertain and says so, then this is not a refutation, but a correct refutation, therefore it is not a refutation itself. If the debater does not know that this argument appears to be correct, thinking 'Because I am a man, I am also a thief,' and then says: 'You are also a thief, because you are a man,' then this is a refutation where the refuter does not point out the error. Therefore, because of a lack of confidence, it is impossible to obtain a refutation by admitting one's own fault and attributing it to others. Abandoning debate is just as it is said. 3-644 Obtaining a refutation but not refuting is abandoning debate. Debate is refuting the debater's flawed argument, and abandoning is not refuting. In reality, it is the reason for refutation but not refuting. This is considered another refutation called abandoning debate. But it is not so, because of a lack of confidence. How is there a lack of confidence? Such a refuter, the possessor of dharma, is a refutation of not pointing out errors, because when the debater's flawed argument requires a correct refutation, he does not make a correct refutation, therefore he abandons the debate, so he is a debater. Although you think that debate is an argument with flaws, I do not think so. Connecting unrelated things, just as it is said: Connecting unrelated things to the reason for refutation is connecting unrelated things. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is, 'joining in accordance'. If it is a case where it is not appropriate to refute, refutation means wanting to forcibly refute where there is no joining in accordance. It is not appropriate because if the debater's proof is correct, and the opponent only presents what appears to be a refutation, then refuting the debater is wrong, because it is actually pointing out the debater's merits, so it should not be refuted. Furthermore, if the opponent presents a correct refutation, and the debater refutes with what appears to be an answer, this is also a case where a debater without confidence is defeated. The collapse of tenets, as it is said: 'After acknowledging an established tenet, due to the lack of certainty, the words become redundant, this is the collapse of tenets.' For example, the debater is a Samkhya, he acknowledges that 'what exists does not perish, and what does not exist does not arise', and in order to prove this point, he acknowledges pleasure and other natures and clarity and other transformations. If the existence of nature and transformation is acknowledged, then according to the examination and questioning of them, and the implication of the words, it must be acknowledged that what does not exist arises, and what exists perishes, thus overturning the previous commitment. This situation is called 'the collapse of tenets' and is considered another refutation. But this is not the case, according to his view, he acknowledges that what does not exist does not arise, and what exists does not perish, and to prove this, he says: 'Clarity and other natures are unified, because their changes follow the changes of the principal.' If argued in this way, then the reason for this argument, 'because their changes follow the changes of the principal' is an unestablished reason, because it is actually pointing out that the debater's premise is not established, so this is a case where the debater is defeated. Therefore, it is not correct to refute from the redundancy of words, through a contradiction with a previous commitment. A similar reason is: outsiders consider 'similar reasons' to be sophistry, and therefore regard it as another refutation. Similarly, all similar reasons are cases of being refuted, such as sophistry in explanation. Therefore, all arguments and apparent refutations of the debater and the opponent should be refuted. Similarly, the view that 'similar reasons' are sophistry, and therefore regard it as another refutation, should also be refuted. Then, if such a refutation is regarded as sophistry, then what is sophistry? The answer is: what is considered to be the appearance of an answer, that is, the apparent argument is sophistry. For sophistry, the Lokayatas and others have many different classifications, and if all the views of the sects are explained in detail, it would be very cumbersome, so it will not be elaborated here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
