Ancient Sakya Scholar's Instructions KH12: Examination of the Merits and Demerits of the 'Treasure of Reasoning' Examination of the Merits and Demerits of the 'Treasure of Reasoning' The Explanation of the Examination of the Merits and Demerits of the 'Treasure of Reasoning,' called 'The Ornament of Debate.' The author seems to be Wangchuk Palzang. Homage to the Buddha, the Bhagavan! The Vedas, the creator, the expansive ant-hill dweller, the Samkhya, the atom eaters, the foot-eyed, etc. Homage to the protector, the sun, whose feet are worshipped by the mountain peaks on their crowns. Having entered well into the island of the ocean of the Seven Treatises, having taken the pure jewel of reasoning, and having dispelled all the poverty of my mind, I respectfully pay homage to that guiding friend. Here I speak: The mandala of the Sugata's doctrine, endowed with a hundred lights, has set. The lotus garden, endowed with a hundred petals of scriptures and reasoning, has withered. Most of the scholars, endowed with six legs, have perished. Therefore, what is the distinction between the wise and the foolish? Even so, the manner of debate of the wise, the system of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti, lords of reasoning, the tradition explained from the good scriptures, the treasure of reasoning, I will explain a portion without error. How is it possible to cross to the depths of the ocean of the scriptures of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti? However, whatever jewel of good explanation is found, why should it not be divided for the benefit of others? Here, for the Examination of the Merits and Demerits of the 'Treasure of Reasoning,' it is necessary to briefly discuss the manner of debate among scholars. How should debate be conducted? There are two aspects of debate: the manner and the speech. First, the logicians of Tibet, with their bodies transformed, jumping and running like monkeys, and with many other unseemly and sinful behaviors; and with speech that is abusive, accusatory, arrogant, and rude, and with many other meaningless words; and with minds that desire to be victorious, jealous, and desirous of fame, etc.; and with minds overwhelmed by hatred. Such debates, instigated by such means, are not approved by the wise, are not the teachings of the Sugata, and are great faults that harm oneself and others in all lifetimes, and therefore should be abandoned. Thus: From engaging in improper debate, the fire of harsh words burns the minds of others, and with diminished thought, one's own mind is burned in this life. With diminished merit, one is burned in the hellfire in the next life. This is an intermediate verse. But isn't the doctrine of the Bhagavan solely without contention? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone says that even holy debate is unreasonable for the sake of avoiding attachment, that is not right. Because the manner of debating, the details of the opponent and the answer, have been explained many times in the sutras. The Ornament of the Sutras also says: 'Therefore, in order to subdue others and to accept followers.' The teacher Dignāga also said: 'Even so, if the characteristics of the Dharma of the Tathāgata change, then it should be investigated.' And so on, many have been said, so holy debate is reasonable for the wise. When engaging in such debate, one needs peace and joy, virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, meaningfulness, accordance with the Dharma, pleasing speech, compassion to accept others, and wisdom to understand the object of debate. Debate should be conducted in such a way that holy debate is the cause of right view, eliminating the darkness of ignorance of oneself and others, destroying the enemy forces of wrong views, and is the only path to the city of Nirvana. Regarding the language of debate, ancient logicians considered there to be five parts. For example, 'Sound is impermanent because it is produced, like a pot.' Similarly, 'Sound is also produced.' Therefore, 'Sound is impermanent.' In order, these five parts are: the proposition (thesis), the reason (hetu), the example (dṛṣṭānta), the application (upanaya), and the conclusion (nigamana), which are considered the five parts of language. Since this was refuted by earlier scholars, this refutation is not discussed here. When Tibetans write, 'Sound, as the subject of the proposition, is impermanent because it is produced,' this is also not without linguistic flaws. Therefore, one should write language with two forms: 'Whatever is produced is impermanent, like a pot. Sound is also produced.' This is an affirmation of concomitance (Anvaya) with the same attribute. 'Whatever is not impermanent is not produced, like space. Sound is produced.' This is a negation of concomitance (Vyatireka) with different attributes. The language of refutation is: 'When the opponent admits that sound is permanent, whatever is permanent is not produced, it is unconditioned, like space. Sound is also permanent.' And so on. For those with the same attributes, use summarizing words; for those with different attributes, use distinguishing words. Distinguishing between the proof and the proof statement is wrong, because proof, refutation, combination, and reductio ad absurdum must all be placed on language. The teacher also said: 'Whatever expresses the three aspects that are certain in both cases, and the unestablished and so on, that itself is proof and refutation.' And so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
