Thus, many Dharma teachings were spoken. 3-626 Here, the characteristic of establishing (sgrub pa) is: faultless speech that demonstrates the three aspects of a valid reason (rtags) ascertained by valid cognition (tshad ma) to others. The characteristic of refutation (sun 'byin) is: faultless speech that can establish refutation and eliminate faults in the philosophical position (grub mtha'). When presenting speech in this way, there are three types of individuals: the proponent (snga rgol), the opponent (phyi rgol), and the witness (dpang po). The characteristic of the proponent is: the individual who, by correctly presenting the means of proof (sgrub byed), can eliminate the faults in the opponent's philosophical position at that time. The characteristic of the opponent is: the individual who, by correctly presenting the refutation, can subdue the proponent's pride. The characteristic of the witness is: the individual who, when the occasion arises, can distinguish between the philosophical positions of the proponent and the opponent, and can discern what should be adopted and what should be rejected. However, a witness is not necessarily required during a debate. During a debate, when the proponent correctly presents the means of proof, and the opponent presents what appears to be a refutation, and the proponent refutes the opponent's apparent refutation, thereby subduing the opponent's pride, the proponent is victorious and is followed, while the opponent is defeated and subjected to censure. If the proponent's means of proof appears to be valid but is not, and the opponent presents a correct refutation, thereby subduing the proponent's pride, the proponent is defeated and subjected to censure, while the opponent is victorious and is followed. 3-627 If the proponent establishes a correct reason, and the opponent presents what appears to be a fault, and the proponent cannot find an answer, then neither the proponent nor the opponent is victorious or defeated, and there is neither censure nor following. If the proponent's reason appears to be valid but is not, and the opponent correctly grasps it, and the proponent cannot find an answer, then there is neither victory nor defeat, nor censure. If the parties agree, although there is no victory or defeat, to impose censure on both parties at that time is to speak presumptuously without understanding the teacher's tradition. Therefore, the Tibetan logicians do not understand the proponent, the opponent, censure, the place of censure, following, the place of following, and so forth, as well as the manner of debate. Here, the refutation of the sixteen points of censure accepted by the Tibetans is not elaborated upon, as it is clearly explained in the texts. Regarding the refutation and cutting off of the Tirthikas (mu stegs byed), I will briefly explain it according to the Treasury of Reasoning (rigs pa'i gter). The statement 'harming one's own commitment' (dam bca' la gnod) is as follows: As stated in the text of the Foot-Eyed Ones (rkang mig pa'i gzhung): 'If one accepts that the property of a dissimilar example exists in one's own example, then it harms one's own commitment, and it is a place of censure.' For example, if one establishes 'sound is impermanent because it is apprehended by the senses,' and the opponent says 'a pot, etc., is also apprehended by the senses, but it is permanent,' then it harms one's own commitment.

Subject: 3-628 If it is refuted: 'Because it is apprehended by the senses, therefore it is impermanent.' If the proponent argues: 'The universal is apprehended by the senses, therefore it is permanent, so sound should also be permanent.' This causes damage to the proposition, which is a fault of refutation. The refutation of this is: 'Because it states a non-probative member.' Such a proof, according to his own system, applies to the dissimilar class, therefore, stating the uncertain, stating a non-probative member is a place for refutation, because to establish that sound is impermanent, the reason of being apprehended by the senses is an uncertain reason. Moreover, according to his system, the permanent universal is also considered to be apprehended by the senses. Therefore, the statement should be formulated as follows: Such a refutation, subject: stating a non-probative member is a place for refutation, because when it is appropriate to state the valid proof that sound is impermanent, he is the refuter who states the uncertain reason for the proof. For the following cases, similar formulations of the subject statement should be applied according to the specific circumstances. Furthermore, there is a difference between refutation and the place of refutation. Other propositions are, as it is said: 3-629 'To refute the established meaning and to show by distinguishing the nature of the dharma is another proposition.' For example, if it is said: 'Sound, subject: is impermanent, because it is apprehended by the senses.' When the opponent refutes: 'The universal is also a subject, because it is apprehended by the senses, therefore it should be impermanent.' Then, the proponent would say: 'Sound will not become permanent, because it is similar to the impermanent pot in not being pervasive. The universal, although apprehended by the senses, is permanent because it is pervasive.' Thus, by stating another proposition, it is considered a place for refutation called 'another proposition'. The refutation of this is: 'If you understand the refutation, it is an uncertain aggregate.' That is, you should not think that in your proposition's proof, 'not being pervasive' is another proposition, because it is a proof or reason presented to establish the previous proof, not a proposition. Because according to your own system, the definition of a reason, which is 'being similar to the example and thus establishing what is to be established,' is complete. Therefore, this is not another proposition, so this is not a refutation by stating another proposition, but a refutation through the uncertainty of the previous reason, 3-630 because the reason of being apprehended by the senses extends to the dissimilar class of permanent things.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
