Refuting with 'similar consequence' is considered as agreeing with a view that aligns with Dharma. A dissimilar agreement with Dharma is: when the previously arisen reason of effort (རྩོལ་བྱུང་གི་རྟགས།) is established as a similar example of a pot, the opponent argues: 'Sound is the subject, it should be permanent, because it is not animate.' If it were animate, it would be impermanent like a pot. Thus, establishing the pot as a dissimilar example to refute is considered a 'dissimilar agreement with Dharma' consequence. Both of these cases appear to be uncertain pseudo-refutations, because 'sound is permanent, because it is not animate' is an actual uncertainty. Or it is a fault of the example, because the pervasion cannot be ascertained on the example, thus it is an uncertain pseudo-refutation. 'Similar conceptualization' is when the proponent states, 'Sound is impermanent because it arises from effort, like a pot,' the opponent states, 'A pot is colored and an object of the eye, therefore it is impermanent. Sound, the subject, is permanent because it is not colored, not an object of the eye, but an object of hearing.' This is considered a 'similar conceptualization' consequence. If the proponent states, 'It is permanent because it is not colored,' it becomes a common uncertainty, and similarly, if 'it is an object of hearing' is stated to prove it, it becomes an uncommon uncertainty, thus it is a pseudo-proof. If the opponent states this as a refutation, then it becomes a pseudo-refutation stating common and uncommon uncertainties respectively. 'Indistinguishable similarity' has three cases: when establishing sound as impermanent, if a pot is taken as a similar example, the opponent argues, 'Sound is the subject. The color and object of the eye of the pot should be established, because it is similar to the pot. The pot should also be established as the subject, being an object of hearing, etc., because it is similar to sound.' Thus, sound and pot become indistinguishable, this refutation is considered an 'indistinguishable similarity' consequence. This, too, because it is an example of the impermanence of sound, the object of hearing of sound, etc., should be obtained, which is an uncertain pseudo-refutation. 'A consequence indistinguishable from the subject to be proven' is an unestablished pseudo-refutation, and 'a consequence similar to the opposite' is a contradictory pseudo-refutation. All three of these are indistinguishable similarities. 'Similar aim' is when the reason 'arising from effort' is stated, the opponent argues, 'This reason is not a valid reason to prove that sound is impermanent, because even without this reason, other reasons can establish the subject to be proven, and the impermanent lightning is also like that. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it is not seen, and sound is established as impermanent through direct perception. And others say: 'The nature of being produced (chos can, a thing with a certain property), because it cannot be established as one aspect of impermanence, is not a reason for establishing the impermanence of sound.' For example, if it is stated like wood, 'It has consciousness, because it sleeps at night,' just as this is not a reason, this refutation is considered a similar target obstruction. This is also because the nature of being produced is not a reason, because it cannot be established as pervasive of impermanence, so if it is fabricated that sound cannot be established either, then this is like a refutation of the reason not being established. Because sound is seen as impermanent through direct perception, and it is established through other reasons, saying 'The nature of being produced is not a correct reason for establishing the impermanence of sound,' this is like an uncertain refutation because there is no pervasion. Similar hesitation is, when stating the reason as the nature of being produced, the opponent examines 'Is the nature of being produced arising or appearing?' Then refutes: 'The nature of being produced is not a correct reason for establishing the impermanence of sound, because there is hesitation whether it is appearing or arising, and because it is observed from production.' This is considered a similar hesitation obstruction. This is also an uncertain refutation, because the reason of hesitation and appearing cannot pervade the establishment of the impermanence of sound. For the case of being arising, this will also become an unestablished refutation. Understanding in meaning is, when stating the reason as the nature of being produced, the opponent refutes: 'Lightning, etc., should be permanent, because it is not produced from production. If it is not produced from production, then permanence is obtained in meaning.' This refutation is considered a similar obstruction understood in meaning. This is also because not being produced from production cannot pervade permanence, so it is an uncertain refutation. Similar reversal is, when stating the reason as the nature of being produced and using a pot as a homogeneous example, the opponent refutes: 'The pot should not be impermanent, because it does not have a reason to establish that it is impermanent.' This is considered a similar reversal obstruction. This is a debate about the example, just like a similar result, or like a refutation pointing out the fault of the example. Here, because both debaters see the pot as impermanent, it actually looks like it is not established. These are explained in the *Collected Topics* (Kunlas Btus, name of a Buddhist logic text), if you want to thoroughly understand these, then you should refer to the text of the *Collected Topics* itself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
