So, does the statement 'a calf is born from a cow' merely indicate that the basis of lotus and blue are the same, or does it merely indicate that a calf is born from some cows? If so, what is the difference between 'non-existence exclusion' (misrid rnam chod) and 'non-possession exclusion' (milden rnam chod)? There is a difference between the two: if a dharma has 'non-possession exclusion', then it is necessarily 'non-existence exclusion'; however, if a dharma has 'non-existence exclusion', then it is not necessarily 'non-possession exclusion'. For example, the statement 'a calf is born from a cow', the characteristic of calf being born, is a statement indicating that the basis, the cow, is non-existence exclusion, but it is not a statement indicating that the cow is non-possession exclusion. Because this statement merely indicates that it is possible for a calf to be born from a cow, but it does not indicate that if it is a cow, then a calf is necessarily born. If one understands such key points, if the object of knowledge is broad, and the proof is narrow, then the proof of the homogeneous side is impossible. Because 'if non-possession exclusion is the subject of debate, then there will be no debate'. And, 'for things to be inferred, it must be certain that they exist', according to this way, if the correct proof as the basis includes the universality of 'if it is this, then it must be that'. Furthermore, not only is the proof broader than the object of knowledge, but it is also impossible for the object of knowledge and the proof to be equally extensive. Because 'if one excludes others, there will be no following'. If the proof is 'excluding others' for the object of knowledge, then there will be no completely identical examples regarding it, so the way of following regarding it cannot be established. Therefore, for all metaphors, arbitrarily modifying the proof, or saying that 'audible sound is impermanent' is a correct proof, etc., these arbitrary statements should be confessed to Dharmakīrti and Dignāga, the two masters of logic, because they violate their intentions, and this fault must be eliminated. Explanation: The second part is the explanation. Linking this with credible scriptures, and explaining the meanings of the cases separately. The first part is: linking the distinction of sound with scriptures, and linking the distinction of meaning with scriptures. The first point is: these three statements of distinction are able to eliminate the three errors of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility in meaning, do you, Sakya Pandita (Sa-paṇ), think this is your own creation? No, because Dharmakīrti's writings clearly explain this, such as 'the words of the Dharma are different', etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 'Self-Commentary,' it says: 'Just as there are three determinations from the perspective of the meaning of characteristics, all sounds also do not exceed three determinations.' As it is said in the scriptures: 'With the difference of words of Dharma, those who do not possess, those who possess others, and those who completely do not possess, make determinations. Even if not combined, one can understand its meaning from the intention of expression.' What is said is also that the three determinations of non-possession, possession of others, and non-relation are, in order, the words that prevent the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility. How sound determines, so does meaning also determine, therefore it does not exceed the three faults of characteristics. Secondly, if all the faults of characteristics are summarized into the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility, then how is this method of preventing faults not self-made, but explained in the scriptures? There is indeed a way of explaining it in the scriptures. Dharmakirti says: 'The sound of the essence of the self-nature word, together with what is not eliminated, is what eliminates the contradiction.' Therefore, it explains the way to eliminate the fault of over-pervasion in the correct aspect of the other meaning. The word 'intention' eliminates non-pervasion. Therefore, it explains the way to eliminate the fault of non-pervasion in the correct aspect of the other meaning. 'The characteristic of the accepted aspect to be proven,' etc., therefore, it explains the way to eliminate the fault of impossibility in it. In the explanation, the 'Self-Commentary' says: 'The teacher said: In the determination of characteristics, the sound of the essence of the self-nature word, together with what is not eliminated, is what eliminates the contradiction.' Therefore, it prevents over-pervasion. The word 'intention' eliminates non-pervasion. Therefore, it prevents non-pervasion. 'The characteristic of the accepted aspect to be proven, these have no aspect, eliminating harm and remainder, because the characteristic does not apply.' It intends to prevent impossibility. Then, how do the five parts of essence, etc., prevent the three faults in the correct aspect of the other meaning? It should be explained: Generally speaking, the complete possession of the five dharmas of essence, etc., can prevent the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility in the correct aspect of the other meaning, because this is its characteristic. However, each of the five parts also has a way to prevent faults. The four parts of essence, etc., prevent over-pervasion in the correct aspect of the other meaning. The part called 'intention' eliminates the fault of non-pervasion in it. First, it is established, in order, the essence of the opponent at that time for refutation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
