Explanation of the Eighth Chapter of 'Rig gter': Determining the Nature of Valid Cognition (Pramana) as a Means of Knowing Explanation of the Eighth Chapter of 'Rig gter': Determining the Nature of Valid Cognition (Pramana) as a Means of Knowing General explanation of the nature of name, sign, and basis. Establishing the proposition: All phenomena are pervaded by name, sign, and basis. From 'The Key to Elucidating the Essence of Difficult Points in the Treasury of Valid Cognition (Tshad ma rigs pa'i gter gyi dka' 'grel gnad kyi snying po gsal byed),' an examination of definitions, which is the explanation of the eighth chapter. Refuge of all beings including the gods, the great Thubpa (Buddha) who has attained the ground of great joy, possessing the victory banner of the teachings and glorious qualities, may the lotus feet of the Excellent One be at the crown of my head. Here, in this chapter examining definitions, may a feast of unprecedented, excellent, and wonderful good explanations be spread, listen with joy. Second, determining the nature of valid cognition as a means of knowing, divided into two: briefly showing the nature of the definition, and separately explaining the bases in detail. The first part has three: generally explaining the common nature of name, sign, and basis; definitely determining the specific definition of valid cognition; and establishing the meaning signified by the definition. The first part also has three: establishing that all phenomena are pervaded by name, sign, and basis; definitely determining the nature of the three pervasive qualities; and explaining in detail the individual characteristics of the three qualities. The first is: knowable phenomena. Before explaining the specific definition of valid cognition, the nature of these three—name, sign, and basis—should be explained. In general, all knowable phenomena are pervaded by the three qualities of name, sign, and basis, because when the appearance of whatever is knowable arises, it has a form that is distinct from others, 3-39 and it is possible to apprehend it with undistorted sound and mind, and it appears with a basis. The meaning of this is not like saying, 'If it is knowable, then it is necessarily all three—name, sign, and basis,' or 'It is pervaded by any one of the three.' Rather, it means that on top of all knowable phenomena, each part of the three—name, sign, and basis—is complete. For example, in the case of a golden vase, the appearance of its bulging belly and narrow base is a form that is distinct from other things like pillars, so the part of the definition is complete. It is possible to apprehend it with the undistorted sound and mind that it is a 'vase,' so the part of the signified is complete. The bulging belly is the basis or support upon which the sound and mind that it is a 'vase' apply, so the part of the basis is also complete. To explain that very meaning, this occurred: 'All knowable phenomena are pervaded by the three qualities, so their nature should be explained.' The nature of the three pervasive qualities --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Identifying the essence of a name and briefly explaining the justification for establishing it. Second, explaining the nature of the three pervasive elements, divided into three parts: identifying the common essence; briefly explaining the justification for establishing it; elaborating on the individual definitions. The first part: For the dharma (ཆོས་, dharma) of knowable objects (ཤེས་བྱ་, śes bya), there is a way to identify the essence of the name, designatum, and basis, because the definition (མཚན་ཉིད, mtshan nyid) is the cause of naming that makes it understood, just as something with a hump, dewlap, and mane is established as the dharma of meaning. The designatum (མཚོན་བྱ, mtshon bya) is the result of naming that makes it understood, just as a cow is established as the dharma of mind. The name-basis (མཚན་གཞི, mtshan gzhi) is the basis on which it is understood, just as something with a white forehead is established as the basis. As the explanation says: 'Definition is the dharma of meaning that makes it understood.' etc., one verse appears. Second part: For these three elements, there also needs to be a reason for establishing each of them, otherwise these three elements will be confused with each other. If you ask what kind of reason is needed? Something with a hump, dewlap, and mane, when you are referred to as a white-faced cow, you are the definition, because you are the cause of naming that makes the white-faced cow understood. Cow, when you are a white-faced cow, you have the reason for being the designatum, because you are the result of naming that makes the white-faced cow understood. Something with a white forehead, when you are a white-faced cow, you are the basis of the name, because you are the support on which the cow is understood. As the explanation says: 'For the three elements, there also needs to be a reason, otherwise everything will be confused.' This sentence appears. Explaining the definition of definition, refuting that definition needs definition. Third, explaining the individual definitions, divided into three parts: explaining the definition of definition; explaining the definition of designatum; explaining the definition of the name-basis. The first part is also divided into three parts: refuting that definition needs definition; establishing the needed definition; explaining the classification of faults to be removed. The first part is also divided into three stages: expressing the view; elaborating on the refutation. The first part is also divided into the first of three stages: expressing the view. Gangpa She'u and others say: 'Definition does not need definition, because definition is existent, and if it needs definition, it will be endless.' Chapa and others say: 'The meaning of definition, that is, the basis for recognizing what a definition is, does not need definition, but the term of definition, that is, self-reflexivity, needs definition.' For example, the definition of a thing, the ability to perform a function, does not need definition, but... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
