Because this contradicts the explanation that condenses the faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility into three. **Second, the object to be signified.** Regarding the object to be signified, there are three aspects: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. First, refutation. First, state the proponent's view, then refute it. First, the proponent's view: Some scholars, like Chagtsang, say: 'The object (dngos po) and the name with a basis (gzhi bcas kyi mtshan mtshon) are the same entity, because there is a relationship of oneness between the name and the object to be signified.' 'Furthermore, there is a way to establish the definition or the basis of the name of the object to be signified, that is, possessing the three verifiable qualities, or the term that is reasonable and not mistaken by consciousness, is considered its name-basis.' The above is the statement of the proponent, in which some say that the name and the object to be signified are the same entity, and the term is considered the name-basis of the object to be signified. Second, refutation: Refuting that the name and the object to be signified are the same entity, and refuting that the term is the name-basis of the object to be signified. First, refuting that the name and the object to be signified are the same entity, there are three faults: becoming a conceptual sense consciousness, becoming the means of proof, and becoming the object to be signified as truly existent. First, becoming a conceptual sense consciousness: The sense consciousness that sees the definition, the yak's hair, and the tail, you should become conceptual, because you are the consciousness that mixes and grasps the meaning of the yak's hair and tail and the general name of the yak. Because you are the sense consciousness that grasps the yak's hair and tail, and that sense consciousness and the object to be signified, the yak, are the same entity, and the yak is also established as the distinction of the general name of the yak. As explained: 'Because the object to be signified is distinguished by the name, the sense consciousness that sees the definition will become conceptual.' Second, becoming the means of proof: The thing that possesses yak's hair and tail, you should become the correct means of proof for establishing a white yak, because you are the correct means of proof for establishing the term 'yak' on a white thing. Because the term 'yak' and the yak's hair and tail are the same entity. As explained: 'The root text says becoming the means of proof, and the commentary says that if it is one entity, it will become the means of proof, but it will not become the means of proof for the term, just like establishing impermanence by being made.' Here, someone might think: 'Just like establishing impermanence by being made, why is it said that being made is the correct means of proof for establishing that sound is impermanent?' I will explain: Being made is also the correct means of proof for establishing that sound is impermanent, because being made is the correct means of proof for establishing that sound is momentary. Being made is the term for establishing that sound is impermanent. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is also a valid sign of establishment, because 'being made' is a valid sign for establishing the term 'impermanent' on sound. However, from the perspective of 'being made' establishing the term 'impermanent' on sound, 'being made' is not established as a valid sign for establishing that sound is impermanent, because the term 'impermanent' is neither momentary nor a single entity. Therefore, this treatise does not merely point out the fault of the name and the named being the same entity, because many proponents of our own system also accept that conjectural names and the named are the same entity. Therefore, the former debater, having accepted that 'Nog Lok She' and the cow are the same entity, and when identifying the object to be indicated—the cow—pointing out the contradiction in accepting that the name of the cow is identified with the cow, is truly perplexing. Since this is the case, it would be better to rest here for a while! The third statement is: the name of the object to be indicated—the cow—as the subject, you should be real, because you have the same identity and the same entity as the real 'Nog Lok She'. This is a real reason. It cannot be accepted, because you have accepted it as imputed, because you have accepted that the imputed possesses three conditions. If explained in this way, it will become real. And in the commentary it says: 'It will not become imputed, because it is the same entity as the real.' May the blessings of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo enter my heart, and from then on, may the eye of wisdom become clear. I am Nagarjuna, these are my good sayings. Endowed with the beauty of letters, I, Jampel Dorje, have written this. May those who open the eye of wisdom see the beautiful form of this good saying! May virtue increase!
