It is sufficient to apply (the reason) alone. When explaining 'the real characteristic', 3-46 'Even if the three modes (tri-rūpa) are uncertain, by merely ascertaining the produced and having whiteness, one can understand impermanence and a cow.' This statement occurred. If one thinks: To ascertain that sound is impermanent, it is not necessary to ascertain the three modes (tri-rūpa) that prove sound is impermanent, because even fools who do not know the terminology of the three modes (tri-rūpa) can understand that sound is impermanent, and that there is fire on the mountain, etc.; similarly, to ascertain a cow, it is not necessary to ascertain the inclusion of a hump, etc., because even most worldly people nowadays, even if they do not know what it is to have a hump and dewlap, can clearly distinguish what a cow is. Then, he is undoubtedly influenced by such a misconception. But I explain it this way: Most people nowadays, thinking that 'having whiteness is a cow' and 'a golden bulging thing is a pot', etc., these thoughts are based on the reasons of having a hump, etc., and bulging, etc. If it is a definite cognition, then it conforms to the definition; if it is accepted without any reason, then it is not a definite cognition, but a random speculation, or what we call a latent doubt. 3-47 'Even if the three modes (tri-rūpa) are uncertain, there is certainty that there is fire on the mountain', this also needs to be distinguished: If it is determined by relying on the correct inference for others (parārthānumāna), then both the meaning and terminology of the three modes (tri-rūpa) need to be determined; if it is determined by relying on the correct inference for oneself (svārthānumāna), then there may be a situation where the terminology of the three modes (tri-rūpa) is uncertain, but the meaning must be determined, and this key point needs to be kept in mind. On this, Paṇchen Śākya Chokden thinks: 'The two lines of 'three modes (tri-rūpa) and dewlap', etc., seem to be incorrect, because they are not related to the previous commitment. If you ask why, because 'the basis of the sign is the meaning to be established', the understanding of avoiding faults is: Because it is impossible to determine the ultimate boundary of the sign and the definition, therefore the fault of the temporary to-be-established and to-be-signified being uncertain does not occur, because establishing the three modes (tri-rūpa) on the basis of the sign (such as being produced) can establish the to-be-established, and for the definition of the basis of the definition (such as having the ability to function and the three attributes of a thing), it is not necessary to apply the definition infinitely, therefore, when these are determined, one can also understand the terminology of the signified thing and the terminology of the definition of the thing.' 3-48 Refuting it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reasoning for doing so is as follows: Even if the three aspects (tri-rupa) do not ascertain the existence of a substance, merely by the certainty of being produced (krta) and obscuration (lkog shal), it becomes certain as a valid reason (hetu) and definition (lakshana). If it is attached in this way, it can be established. Saying this is not the demeanor of a wise person, because if the way to refute the previous fault is like that, then there is absolutely no point in explaining the reasoning of obstruction. Because by proving that sound is impermanent with the reason of being produced, the three aspects are certain, and the impermanence of sound can be established; and because the ability to perform a function is certain, it must be admitted that the entity exists, because there is no reasoning to obstruct it. Even if it is assumed that there is an obstruction, showing the obstruction with 'Even if the three aspects do not ascertain the existence of a substance,' etc., is completely irrelevant. Even if the three aspects are uncertain, it can be determined as a valid reason because being produced is certain. Because on the basis of the reason—being produced—the three aspects are certain, so what is to be proven can be established, etc., it must be inferred in this way, otherwise it will become an irrelevant joke. Paṇḍita Śākya's actual intention is that on 'the basis of the reason is what is to be proven,' etc., adding the fault of 'Even if the obscuration of the three aspects is uncertain,' etc., is irrelevant, because the previous proponent did not admit that white mustard seed is the basis of the definition, this seems to be the only reason. There is no fault, because as I said above, this is because it is a demeanor of not understanding the previous proponent's thought. Furthermore, Paṇchen himself explained it this way: Even in one's own system (svalakṣaṇa), infinity (anavasthā) is admitted, and it is possible to refute the fault of obstructing it, and for the statement of refutation, that obstruction is also difficult to apply. First, does the definition of a thing exist or not? If it exists, then is it a definition or something defined? If it is something defined, then a definition is also needed, etc., in one's own system, infinity must also be admitted. Second, for that thing, the fault of 'the way of establishing is uncertain,' etc., does not apply, even if the end of infinity is not determined, but when the ability to perform a function is certain, the thing is certain, and when the thing is certain, the definition of the thing does not necessarily need to be certain. Third, for the refutation of the fault, the obstruction of 'Even if the obscuration of the three aspects is uncertain,' etc., is not applicable, because from the self-nature (svarūpa) of the definition of a valid reason and the self-nature of the definition of a cow, it will not be admitted that that is its definition. Etc., after posing the question, Paṇḍita Śākya himself replied: Even if the definition of a thing needs a definition, the second definition does not need a definition, Even if the second definition is not established, it can be understood through the first definition. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
