Therefore, just as the fruit of a thing needs a definition, but the fruit of the fruit of a thing does not need a definition. They explain it this way. I say this: the definition of the definition of a thing, etc., is endless, which must also be admitted in your own system, because there is no connection between admitting the definition of the definition of a thing and not admitting it thereafter. Admitting it in this way does not incur the fault of 'the cause of establishment is uncertain,' etc., because although the endlessness of the definition is admitted, the combination of the general and specific characteristics of the definition is not admitted to be endless. This point must be understood: although the endlessness of the definition of a thing is admitted, when the first definition of a thing is determined, it is not necessary to determine the second endless definition, etc. If the endless combination of definitions is admitted, then when the ability to perform a function is determined as a definition, it must also be admitted that the definition is endless, because in proving that the ability to perform a function is a definition, an endless combination must be listed. Second, refuting the endlessness of what is to be expressed. Tsang Nagpa said: The expressed of a cow is also endless, because if one does not cling to the earlier and earlier names of a cow, then it is not knowable, and if one clings, then the earlier and earlier names become the definition of the later and later ones. In explaining this previous view, a verse appeared: 'There is also clinging to names,' etc. To refute it, your endlessness also applies to trees, for trees with branches and leaves, if there are no branches, then it is not a tree, and if there are branches, then branches are also needed, so the second and third branches, etc., must be admitted to be endless. In explaining, the verse appeared: 'If that is so, then for the branches,' etc. To this, he said: When proving that it is a sandalwood tree, if having branches is taken as the reason, even if there is no second branch, it will not not be a tree, because the tree with branches and leaves is no different in essence from the sandalwood tree. Then, when proving that it is a white cow, if having horns, etc., is taken as the reason, even if the first and second names of the cow, etc., are not established as endless, the name of the cow will not not be knowable, because having horns, etc., is no different in essence from the white cow. In explaining, 'A branch for another branch,' etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two shlokas. Regarding these meanings, if asked, 'Does that which has branches, have branches?' one must acknowledge 'Yes.' Then, if asked, 'Does the branch of that which has branches, have branches?' If one acknowledges 'Yes,' wouldn't it become endless?' If one thinks this way, from the perspective of words, it would indeed become endless, but from the perspective of meaning, it would not become endless. No matter how many times one acknowledges 'the branch of that which has branches,' etc., one only thinks that 'that which has branches' itself is 'that which has branches,' and one does not think that the branches are endless in meaning. This is similar to the endlessness of the term 'cow.' One must understand the key points of both the former and latter situations. Now, establishing one's own system and avoiding disputes. Second, establishing one's own system is divided into two parts: briefly explaining from the perspective of the debater, and explaining in detail from the perspective of argumentation. The first part is: 'Then, do you yourself need definitions of definitions, etc.?' 'No, I don't.' 'If you do, how would you construct the argument?' Even if definitions of definitions, etc., are needed, endless arguments of definitions, etc., are not needed. For example, on a white object, once one understands the meaning of 'having a raised dewlap and hanging throat skin,' and the association of the term 'cow,' then the white object is considered a cow. But to determine that the white object is a cow, endless definitions are not necessary. Then, when can the association between term and meaning be determined? Generally, depending on whether the debater is intelligent or foolish, there are three situations: For intelligent debaters who have clear memories and do not forget the association between the meaning of the raised dewlap and the term 'cow,' merely seeing the raised dewlap on the white object, they can determine that the white object is a cow without relying on any sign, by recalling the association of the combination of cow and raised dewlap, etc., on the white object. For foolish debaters who have vague memories and easily forget, they need to establish the term by using the combination of raised dewlap, etc., as a sign, and by establishing the sign, and by recalling the association of the term, they can determine that the white object is a cow. For extremely foolish debaters who do not remember the association of the term at all, one needs to explain the meaning of the raised dewlap and hanging throat skin, that is, the raised flesh on the neck and the hanging skin on the throat. When the term and meaning correspond, one can determine that the white object is a cow, regardless of whether one relies on a sign or not. Even if it is explained this way, if the term and meaning still do not correspond, that is not an obstacle to the subsequent inference of establishing the term, so one should adopt a neutral attitude.' This is how it is explained. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
