If, when possessing the three aspects (Tibetan: ཚུལ་གསུམ་, referring to being present in all similar instances, absent in all dissimilar instances, and present in the subject being proven), does this possessing of the three aspects also possess the three aspects? If it does not possess them, then it cannot become a valid sign (Tibetan: རྟགས་ཡང་དག་, referring to a correct reason or evidence) that correctly proves smoke as a valid sign; if it does possess them, then it is the second set of three aspects. In this way, there would be a third, fourth, and so on, endlessly. If someone asks this, then even if possessing the three aspects, there is no fault of the three aspects leading to endlessness. Because when using the possessing of the three aspects as the sign to correctly prove smoke as a valid sign, the meaning of 'possessing the three aspects also possesses the three aspects' is that smoke itself possesses the three aspects, and it is not that there exists another possessing of the three aspects apart from smoke, thus leading to endlessness. In the above explanation, there appeared one verse and two lines, such as 'If the three aspects do not exist, there is no sign'. **Establishing the Definition of What is Needed** The second part is establishing the definition of what is needed, including refutation and establishment. First is the refutation: If a definition needs a definition, then what is its definition? The great translator (Tibetan: ལོ་ཙཱ་བ་ཆེན་པོ་) and others say: 'The establishment of the objects to be expressed is the definition of a definition.' Then, the means of understanding (Tibetan: གོ་བྱེད་, that which makes one understand) of the object to be proven (Tibetan: བསྒྲུབ་བྱ་, the view to be proven) – the valid sign – should also be a definition, because that is what they think. Chapha (Tibetan: ཆ་པ་) and others say: 'That which is existent (Tibetan: རྫས་ཡོད་, referring to something that truly exists) and possesses three qualities is a definition.' Then, what do these three qualities refer to? The great master Chapha (Tibetan: ཆ་པ་ཆེན་པོ་) says: 'Being established on the subject to be defined (Tibetan: མཚན་གཞི་, the object being defined), being existent, and cutting off the contradictory of different kinds of things.' Tsang Nakpa (Tibetan: གཙང་ནགས་པ་) and others say: 'The self-reverse (Tibetan: རང་ལྡོག་, the uniqueness of a thing itself) is established in substance, and the thing that is different from the meaning-reverse (Tibetan: དོན་ལྡོག་, the concept or meaning of a thing) is established on the subject to be defined. In short, it is a definition, not the definition of other things, and it is established on the subject to be defined as something to be eliminated.' If someone asks this, then, that which is existent and possesses three qualities, you are not the definition of a definition, because your certainty depends on the certainty of the definition, and the certainty of the definition also depends on your certainty. In the above explanation, there appeared one verse, such as 'Some say the establishment of the objects to be expressed'. The second part is the self-view: The meaning-reverse that cuts off the contradictory is established on the subject to be defined, you are the definition of a definition, because you are the meaning-reverse that cuts off the contradictory of the definition and is established on the subject to be defined. In the above explanation, there appeared the phrase 'The reverse of cutting off the contradictory is established.' In the root and commentary of this treatise, it is said: 'The establishment of the meaning-reverse that cuts off the contradictory is its definition.' Among them, 'cutting off the contradictory' means cutting off what is not this, 'meaning-reverse' means cutting off the expresser and the subject to be defined, and 'established' means showing only the undifferentiated whole without distinguishing between the self-characteristic and the general characteristic, simply indicating the meaning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
