For a concept (འགྲོ་བ་, Sanskrit: gati), its definition (མཚན་ཉིད་) must possess the characteristic of being able to encompass all defined objects (མཚོན་བྱ་) and being free from the three faults of 'under-pervasion,' 'over-pervasion,' and 'impossibility,' and nothing more is needed. As it is said: 'Under-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility are common faults of definitions.' Therefore, if something is a definition of a certain dharma, it must be able to eliminate the three faults of under-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility of that dharma. That is, as a definition of a certain dharma, it must simultaneously possess the three functions of excluding what the dharma does not have, excluding what others have, and excluding what is impossible. From the aspect of excluding what the dharma does not have, it can eliminate the fault of under-pervasion; from the aspect of excluding what others have, it can eliminate the fault of over-pervasion; from the aspect of excluding what is impossible, it can eliminate the fault of impossibility. This is because the three functions of excluding what is not possessed, etc., can eliminate the three faults of under-pervasion, etc. Generally speaking, all exclusions of sound and exclusions of meaning are included in these three functions. If something is an expression of excluding what is not possessed, then it can eliminate the fault of under-pervasion; if something is an expression of excluding what others possess, then it can eliminate the fault of over-pervasion; if something is an expression of excluding what is impossible, then it can eliminate the fault of impossibility. If something is an exclusion of what is not possessed in terms of meaning, then it can also eliminate the fault of under-pervasion; if something is an exclusion of what others possess in terms of meaning, then it can also eliminate the fault of over-pervasion; if something is an exclusion of what is impossible in terms of meaning, then it can also eliminate the fault of impossibility, which has been proven by scripture and logic.' As it is said: 'All exclusions of sound and meaning do not exist other than these three.' Then, can the reasons why these three exclusions can eliminate the three faults of under-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility be examined by scripture and logic? These are all flawless logical secrets, not something that others can understand. But I will explain it to those who are fortunate. Please open your ears like lotuses and listen. The expression of excluding what is not possessed can eliminate the fault of under-pervasion, for example, the statement 'Only what is produced is sound,' which shows that production is the exclusion of what is not possessed for sound. This statement shows that whatever is sound must be produced, because it shows that it is impossible for sound not to be produced. Therefore, the statement 'Sound is only produced,' and --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two statements 'sound exists only in space' and 'sound is produced' are essentially the same, and both statements indicate that if something is sound, then it must be produced. Because both statements show in an exclusive way that production does not exist in sound. As it says in the Dharmakīrti: 'Through action, exclusion of non-existence, expresses characteristics and accompaniment.' Furthermore, the statement of 'exclusion of others' can eliminate the defect of being too broad in scope. 3-67 The statement 'only sound can be heard' is a statement that shows in an exclusive way that 'audibility' exists in 'sound'. Because it shows that if something is audible, then it must be sound. Because the statement excludes the characteristic of audibility from being established on anything other than sound. As it says in the Dharmakīrti: 'Through action, exclusion of others, expresses characteristics and accompaniment.' Similarly, for pervasive things or reasons, such as 'production', the statement that 'impermanence' is pervasive, or that 'impermanence exists only in production', is a statement that shows in an exclusive way that 'impermanence' exists in 'production'. Therefore, 'if something is productive, then it must be impermanent', which indicates the subsequent universality. The statement 'production exists only in impermanence' is a statement that shows in an exclusive way that 'production' exists in 'impermanence'. Therefore, 'if something is not impermanent, then it must not be productive', which indicates the opposite universality. As Dharmakīrti said when expressing subsequent and opposite universality: 'Universality lies in the fact that it exists only in the universal thing, or the universal thing exists only in it.' 3-68 Because he explained it in different ways of determination. If someone thinks that the statement 'production exists only in impermanence' is a statement of excluding non-existence, and the statement 'impermanence exists only in production' is a statement of excluding others, and that this is just your own fabrication, that is not the case. Because in the explanation of it, Śākyamati said: 'Certainty lies in the fact that the universal thing, the reason, exists only in the universal thing, the property to be proven, determined by excluding non-existence, because it is impossible.' 'It exists only in it', this determination is impossible.' And so on. 'Only in it' means only in the universal thing, determined by excluding things related to others.' And so on, he clearly explained it. Furthermore, the statement of 'impossible exclusion' can exclude the impossibility of things. For example, in the lotus (mtsho skyes), the possibility of blue (sngon po) is excluded. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
