(Sakya Pandita)……

If someone says: 'All sounds that express meaning must be exclusively distinguishing, directly related to a definite object.' The reason is: 'All sounds that express meaning must function by excluding their opposites.' Then, regarding all sounds that express meaning, we can say: 'Even if they are not directly related to a definite object, they have the essence of definiteness.' For example, when we say 'Bring some water in a vase,' although it is not explicitly stated 'only water in a vase,' it excludes non-vases, non-water, and things that cannot be carried, thus determining that only water is to be brought in a vase. This way of expressing meaning by excluding opposites is called 'the sound that excludes others'. The above explanation contains six and a half verses. In the third refutation, someone says: 'The sound called 'knowable' is not necessarily exclusive.' The reason is: 'Because there is no non-knowable that needs to be excluded by it.' To this, we can say: 'This reason is not sufficient.' Because it functions by excluding the false imputation of non-knowable. The key is that if the sound called 'knowable' excludes non-knowable, then non-knowable does not necessarily exist, because if it is the object to be excluded, then it does not necessarily exist. The above explanation contains one verse. In the fourth refutation, someone says: 'The other-differentiation that arises merely from distinguishing non-things, if considered as excluding others, is untenable.' The reason is: 'If it is real, then it contradicts the universal concept, because the universal concept applies to all things; if it is not real, then it is meaningless to regard it as the other-differentiation of things.' To this, we can answer: 'In the Land of Snows, those who agree with the aggregate of parts consider the other-differentiation that arises merely from distinguishing non-things to be real.' If so, then those arguments used to criticize outsiders for admitting the reality of universal things will turn against themselves. 'Then, is the other-differentiation that is merely distinguished from non-trees the same entity as Shapa (a person's name) or a different entity?' If it is said to be the same entity, then Shapa is not a tree, because the other-differentiation that is merely distinguished from non-trees is the entity of Shapa. And the entity of Shapa does not apply to sandalwood trees. If it is said to be a different entity, then Shapa must also have a different entity from it, therefore Shapa is not a tree, because it is a different entity from the other-differentiation that is merely distinguished from non-trees, just like a piece of stone. The above explanation contains three verses. Here, in order to prevent the view of aggregate of parts, people have made many obscurations of the other-differentiation of trees and the distinction of trees.

Those who promote the 'Pramana School' (kyai pai ring lug, school of logic), greatly advocate the view that 'universals and particulars, etc., are non-entities.' They believe that a tree is universally present in all kinds of trees and is substantially established. Now, let's turn this argument back on themselves: 'A tree, having properties, must be either the same entity or a different entity from Shapa (name of a person), because it is a tree.' If this premise does not hold, then who decides the basic premise of 'things that are opposite to non-trees,' etc.? Even to put it simply, if they say, 'The opposite of a tree is a tree, but it is neither the same entity nor a different entity from Shapa,' then isn't their own reasoning ability decayed? If they admit it, then what is it? If they say, 'It is the same entity,' then sandalwood is not a tree, because a tree and Shapa are the same entity. The entity or self-nature of Shapa does not apply to sandalwood. 'If it is Shapa, then it is not other trees.' Do they still remember this triple relationship? If a tree and Shapa are different entities, then Shapa must also be a different entity from a tree, therefore, Shapa must not be a tree, because it is different from the entity of a tree. Fundamentally: 'If the other is a tree, then it is not Shapa.' The commentary says: 'If a person is Shapa, then he is not a tree, because he is different from things that are opposite to non-trees, just like a stone.' Do they still remember this triple relationship? According to the literal meaning of 'If the other is a tree, then it is not Shapa,' a tree that has already borne fruit is not a tree, because it is a different entity from a tree. Isn't this intermediate premise obviously invalid? I don't think so, because it has been said before: 'In the universal examination, just as the same entity and different entities have been distinguished.' A tree that has already borne fruit, although it is the same entity as a tree and 'established happiness,' or a different entity contained by the same entity, generally speaking, it is not a different entity from a tree, because it is the entity or self-nature of a tree, therefore it is the same self-nature or the same entity as a tree. If this is not the case, then this intermediate premise must be personally acknowledged by Dharma Lord Sakya Pandita (Sakya Pandita, a famous scholar of the Sakya school). If a tree and Shapa are different entities, but Shapa and a tree are the same entity, then you must also admit this. If you admit this, wouldn't this argument turn back on yourselves? If so, then the previous arguer also admitted that 'the opposite of a tree is a different entity from Shapa, but it is the same entity as Shapa,' then how do you refute it? Then, are you saying that this argument either does not apply to others, or even if it applies to others, it will turn back on yourselves? We think this argument... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
