Q: Then, doesn't it contradict the scriptures that say space is a permanent substance? A: It does not contradict. Although there are those, such as the Vaisheshika (a Hindu school of philosophy) and the Vaibhashika (a school of Hinayana Buddhism), who consider space to be a permanent substance, the esteemed Dharmakirti (a famous Indian Buddhist philosopher) states: 'It is merely from the aspect of being the opposite of impermanence that the term 'permanent' is applied; he does not consider it to be a permanent substance established by its own entity.' Regarding the seven shlokas (verses) such as 'When an object arises from a cause, it does not need to rely on non-objects,' they concisely reveal the key to eliminating phenomena: Sense consciousness of the five senses is like the eyes of a mute person; although it does not know 'what this is,' it clearly appears. Conceptual thought is like a blind orator; although it does not clearly see the object, it grasps 'this is this.' Q: Since sense consciousness clearly sees but does not know 'what this is,' and conceptual thought grasps in this way but does not clearly see, how can a person know what to accept and reject? A: The answer to that is: Self-awareness that experiences these two is like a person with all senses complete; conceptual thought grasps 'this is this,' and sense consciousness clearly sees. By combining these two, you can distinguish between what to accept and reject without confusion. Therefore, it is said: 'Sense consciousness is like the eyes of a mute person, conceptual thought is like a blind orator; self-awareness, like one with complete senses, harmonizes these two to make acceptance and rejection.' Refuting the Arguments of Others The third part is refuting arguments, which is divided into five aspects: If there is no universal, then harmonization will be impossible; if it is considered 'other-exclusion,' then it will fall into mutual dependence; if there is no object to be excluded, then 'other-exclusion' will not be established; if the opposite of things is examined, then it will be unreasonable; if there is no universal, then a common basis will be impossible. Here is the refutation of the first point: The Vaisheshika heretics say: 'It is impossible for a common name 'pot' to apply to all manifestations of pots, because there is no substantial universal that follows all manifestations of pots.' They believe that all names are established by virtue of a substantial universal, just as something appears prominent because it has width. The heretics believe that names are determined by concepts, entities, and abilities. To refute this view, it is divided into three parts: direct refutation, dispelling doubts about the names of dharma and dharmata (nature of dharma), and summarizing and revealing its essence. First is the direct refutation: The name 'pot' for all manifestations of pots, you are not established by virtue of a substantial universal that universally exists in all manifestations of pots, because you... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it is a sound that enters due to the power of the intention of the motivation. These sound concepts of yours are not determined by the object, but are placed by the intention. Regarding this explanation, there is a verse: 'Without generality, there is no sound of it.' This is one verse. Secondly, someone says: 'The sound of expressing the attribute of 'the pot itself,' and the sound of expressing the possessor of 'the pot,' combining them separately from the perspective of expressing the object and expressing the substance, is meaningless. Because all expressing sounds are not combined by the power of the object. This is universal. The sound of expressing the attribute is used because the generality or difference is established as an object. The sound of expressing the possessor is used because the particular or non-object is established as an object.' If you say so, then these two sounds are not combined by the power of difference and non-object. Because for the thing itself, like a bloated belly, by abandoning all other differences that are not a pot, the sound of expressing the attribute like 'the pot itself' is combined. By not abandoning these differences, the sound of expressing the possessor like 'the pot' is combined. Regarding this explanation, there is a verse: 'If so, then dharma and dharmī.' This is one verse. Thirdly, if one wants to know the distinction between these two sounds, and the reason for distinguishing these two sounds as abandoning or not abandoning other differences, then this is a very important doubt, so it must be explained. In the commentary on the new Pramāṇasamuccaya (Compendium on Valid Cognition) of Phyogs glang (Dignāga): 'Non-substance, generality, and collection of objects are names for expressing the possessor. Difference, individual, and kind are names for the sound of expressing the attribute.' This statement is incorrect. Because the sound of expressing generality is the sound of expressing the attribute, not the sound of expressing the possessor. The sound of expressing the individual is also the sound of expressing the possessor, not the sound of expressing the attribute. Expressing collection and expressing kind do not have much connection to being expressed as possessor and attribute separately. Because expressing collection has never been said to be the sound of expressing the possessor. Therefore, generally speaking, the sound of expressing the possessor, and the classification of the sound of expressing the attribute, is the sound of expressing the possessor. The classification of the sound of not abandoning other differences and abandoning other differences is the sound of not abandoning other differences. The classification of the sound of expressing substance and the sound of expressing object is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
