Because there are four ways of apprehending: taking one as different, taking different as one, taking one as one, and taking different as different. The first case is like apprehending 'made' and 'impermanent' as different. The second case is like apprehending 'Shapa tree' and 'fir tree' as the same. The third case is like apprehending 'vase' as 'vase'. The fourth case is like apprehending 'sound' and 'vase' as different. Now, explaining the first two of these four. First, regarding apprehending different as one, there are three aspects: the reason for imputation, the nature of the mind that imputes, and the necessity of imputation. The first point, combining these three in common, for example, the concept that apprehends Shapa tree and fir tree as the same has three aspects: the reason why you apprehend Shapa tree and fir tree as the same, etc., is that Shapa tree and fir tree have the same characteristic of 'having branches,' etc., which is the reason; the state of mind is being mistaken as the same due to habit; the necessity is realizing the same aspect in affirmation and negation. The second point, apprehending one as different also has three aspects: for example, the concept that apprehends the 'made' and 'impermanent' of sound as different. Although 'made' and 'impermanent' are not actually different in terms of sound, there are three reasons, mental states, and necessities for you to impute them as different: because 'made' and 'impermanent' are reversed from different opposites; because different opposites also hold the two reversed as different; by combining the three opposites of sound, 'made,' and 'impermanent' with subject, property, and reason through different opposites, it is possible to realize that sound is impermanent from the reason of 'made,' which is the necessity. The above explanation can be summarized in four verses: 'Self-character one and different, the way of holding distinctions, four possibilities exist.' Understanding this key point, even if the reason, property, and subject like 'made' are seemingly regarded as excluding others, the undifferentiated reason, property, and subject should not be regarded as excluding others. Thus, the power of wisdom is greatly enhanced in the application of appearance and exclusion. If one knows this way of holding distinctions, then the answer to the previous debate can also be achieved effortlessly: although 'made' and 'impermanent' are not actually different, they are regarded as different because the opposites are different in terms of exclusion; although there is no common pervasion between sound and vase in reality, it exists in terms of exclusion. Therefore, 'made' is established as pervading both sound and vase. Therefore, just as 'made' and 'impermanent' are not different in reality, but it is necessary to acknowledge that 'made' and 'impermanent' are different, even though generalities and particulars are not established in reality, it is necessary to acknowledge that 'made' and 'impermanent' are generalities, which is the key point. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one understands this, one can grasp the jewel of Jetsun Sakya's (Jetsun Sakya, founder of the Sakya school) treatises. Fortunate ones should cherish it in their hearts. Explanation of the classification of terms The second part is classification, which is divided into three parts: the actual content of detailed classification; excluding others in terms of meaning; explaining the two types of classification separately. The first part is the mental exclusion of others. In terms of its basis, you have two: the mental exclusion of others based on objects; the mental exclusion of others based on non-objects. These two exclusions of others, in terms of their object, can be divided into two types: mental exclusion based on the way concepts hold; sound exclusion based on the way language expresses. That is: From the door of holding onto existence and non-existence, there are two types of exclusion of others. This is one verse. Therefore, there is a reason why only mental exclusion of others is explained, and the two types of exclusion of others, negation of existence (non-affirming negation) and negation of attribute (affirming negation), are not explained. Because these two can be understood in the eighth chapter explaining the two types of negation, so they are not explained here. Then, in the root text and commentary, it says: 'Exclusion of others of objects' and 'Exclusion of others of non-objects,' but you say 'Exclusion of others based on objects' and 'Exclusion of others based on non-objects.' Isn't this a misinterpretation? No. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says: 'Because it relies on both objects and non-objects, generally speaking, there are also three types.' This is classifying from the perspective of the basis. And here, in the self-commentary, it says: 'Through the way of establishing what is to be proven and excluding what is to be refuted, there are two types: exclusion of others of existence and exclusion of others of non-existence.' This is based on the way of establishing and the way of excluding, distinguishing from the way of holding and the way of appearance. Although relying on different treatises, the key to the meaning is the same. For example, the general meaning of a vase is the exclusion of others based on objects, because the vase that is the basis for placing it as the exclusion of others is an object. Similarly, it is also the exclusion of others of objects, because it appears as the image of an object in the concept that holds the vase. Other things can be inferred by analogy. The second part is: Some people think that the exclusion of others of meaning is the nature of an object as the exclusion of others. Then, is a vase the mental exclusion of others? Or is it the non-affirming negation exclusion of others? If it is the former, then the vase is not a mental exclusion, because if it is a mental exclusion, it must be established depending on the way language concepts are used. But you do not depend on language concepts.
