If it is said to be merely appearance, then it is impossible to eliminate the superimposition on direct perception. If it is said to eliminate the superimposition of excluding others, then it is no different from inference, not exceeding the scope of conceptual thought. Therefore, if the name 'determination' is established, it will be destroyed (direct perception). 'If direct perception can eliminate superimposition and determine the object merely by appearing to that object, then all direct perceptions can eliminate superimposition and determine the object. If the determination to eliminate superimposition is through the exclusion of contradictories, then it becomes conceptual thought, so the term 'direct perception determines the object' is not even appropriate.' How is this explained? We, who follow the Three Hundred Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, should acknowledge this: Based on the direct perception in the continuum of a Tirthika (Tirthika, a non-Buddhist philosophical school), without the aid of a determining consciousness, direct perception itself cannot eliminate superimposition or perform the function of determination. That is, when the accompanying determination can determine the object, direct perception can also determine the object. There is not much fault in establishing it this way. If it is not like this, it will become the aforementioned fault. This is the essence of the key point. If it is not based on Tirthika, faults may arise, because the uninterrupted path that realizes selflessness eliminates the superimposition of self-grasping. If direct perception does not have the function of determination by its own power, then the determination brought about by the previous apprehending sense consciousness would be the fault of not being any kind of consciousness. Because blue is determined by its own power, it is not direct perception; because it does not rely on a sign, it is not inference; because it does not need to eliminate the superimposition of non-blue, it is not even mere exclusion. 'To this, the answer is: 'This is the subject, you are conceptual thought, because it is the consciousness that apprehends blue as the opposite of excluding non-blue.' Therefore, it is also established as exclusion. Furthermore, this is the subject, although you are not valid cognition, you are the one who obtains entry into the object, because you mistakenly enter the general image of blue as the self-characteristic of blue, and ultimately you are the determining consciousness that obtains the self-characteristic of blue. This is the subject, the part of your face that looks inward is also valid cognition, because it is self-awareness. It is also the one who eliminates the superimposition of non-blue, because it is the clinging mind that determines blue, brought about by direct perception.' Thus it is explained: 'Determining the opposite of blue is conceptual thought, therefore it is exclusion.' And so on, there are three and a half verses. If all non-conceptual consciousnesses are appearance and entry, then what fault is there if one acknowledges that the conceptual thought of sound is appearance and entry? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is an error, then the grasping conceptualization of sound and the names expressing sound, as dharmas, you perform affirmation and negation on the sound, with 'made' being impermanent and 'unmade' being permanent, because you are sound conceptualizations that arise from the appearance of sound. This is what is said: If sound conceptualization is measured by appearance, etc., for a total of seven lines. Second, explaining elimination in detail. Explaining elimination is divided into: explaining the characteristic of the signifier, explaining the divisions of the basis, and refuting others' arguments against it. First, explaining the characteristic of the signifier. First, that which has an object that enters by cutting off direct contradiction, as a dharma, is the characteristic of eliminative entry, because it is the basis of its establishment. The other-exclusion established from the aspect of cutting off direct contradiction, as a dharma, is the characteristic of other-exclusion, because it is the reversal of its meaning. This is what is said: Entering by cutting off direct contradiction is considered to be the object of other-exclusion. Etc. Here, in conjunction with one's own tenets, this treatise must explain the characteristic of direct indication of eliminative entry and the other-exclusion of the mind obtained through meaning, because in the following divisions, there is only mental exclusion, and in one's own system, there is not even a slight non-affirming exclusion of other-exclusion. Therefore, the exclusion of the meaning of sound established from the aspect of cutting off direct contradiction, as a dharma, is the characteristic of mental exclusion, because it is the reversal of its meaning. This is how it is explained. Second, the divisions are divided into two: generally showing the aspects of exclusion, and specifically explaining the detailed divisions. The first is also divided into two: explaining the reality of the object, and explaining the way the mind grasps. First, the actual object of eliminative entry, the general meaning, as a dharma, does not exist, because it is an imputation. Its object of entry, the self-character, as a dharma, exists, because it is capable of performing a function. This is what is said: Because of investigation, the actual object of exclusion does not exist. Etc., for a total of two lines. Second, above, it is said that there is no difference in the meaning of 'made' impermanent, and that it does not exist in the general meaning that commonly follows all differences, only that. 'Made' is the single aspect of the proposition proving that sound is impermanent, and is considered an unestablished reason, because 'made' impermanent has no difference in meaning. Similarly, 'made' does not commonly follow both sound and a pot, because the general meaning that commonly follows in meaning is not established. If it is said to be a real reason, then the answer to this requires understanding the way sound conceptualization grasps, so if it is explained, then the way exclusion grasps, as a dharma, you can be divided into four modes, the self-character of meaning --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
