The two types of other-exclusion (Tibetan: གཞན་སེལ་, meaning: other-exclusion): In sequence, it refers to one's own object of focus, where sound-concepts cannot fulfill their function, and the mental dharma that takes the object as its focus through the method of excluding function. From the perspective of the basis, there are three: existent (Tibetan: དངོས་པོ།, meaning: existent), non-existent (Tibetan: དངོས་མེད།, meaning: non-existent), and sound-concepts that rely on both. From the perspective of the object of focus, there are two: the exclusion of mind and the exclusion of sound, and so on. In terms of establishment, there are two: manifest establishment and exclusion establishment. The former can serve the purpose of establishment during the stages of manifestation and entry, but it cannot serve the purpose of establishment that distinguishes between affirmation and negation. In terms of negation, there are two: non-affirming negation (Tibetan: མ་ཡིན་དགག་, meaning: negation of being) and absence negation (Tibetan: མེད་དགག་, meaning: negation of absence). The non-affirming negation is the establishment of exclusion, but because negation is generally more effective, if it is other-exclusion or a general characteristic, then it must be negation, and so on. So, for you, if it is other-exclusion, then it must be either the other-exclusion of existents or the other-exclusion of non-existents, because other-exclusion is necessarily one of these two. If you admit it, then please use 'knowable' (Tibetan: ཤེས་བྱ་, meaning: knowable) as the subject. If you admit that it is not, then you are a third category of other-exclusion that is neither of these two. The reason is that in your own 'Commentary on the Treasury of Reasoning' (Tibetan: རིགས་གཏེར་ཊཱིཀྐར།), it says: 'Absence is other-exclusion, it is absence negation. Like knowables, etc., the difference of non-affirming negation, cannot be included in the two, the third category is existents and non-existents, and sound-concepts that rely on both.' The three explained there are all included. Therefore, the two scholars Go Shak (Tibetan: གོ་ཤཱག་, meaning: Go Shak) considered the other-exclusion of non-existents and the other-exclusion of absence negation to be the same. When he himself did not encounter difficulties, the venerable Shakya Chokden (Tibetan: དཔལ་ཤཱཀྱ་མཆོག་ལྡན་, meaning: Pal Shakya Chokden) clearly saw this difficulty and initially said: 'Exclusion is divided into two: existents and non-existents, the other-exclusion of existence and non-existence. Therefore, all the dharmas of exclusion are included in the other-exclusion of existence and non-existence.' Immediately after, he pointed out the contradiction in admitting that absence is the same as the other-exclusion of absence negation, and it must also be admitted that there is a third category of other-exclusion that does not belong to these two, which is like the sound of a fox naturally coming out. So, what do you think should be said? Although it can be roughly understood from the previous chapter of the text, to make it easier to understand, let me explain it a little: the exclusion of the appearance of the object and the two ways in which the object enters. In the first way, the general... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mere appearance is established as the object of non-conceptual appearance, and is the same as knowable. However, appearance that is distinguished by eliminating appearance, has already been explained as being established on the way of holding of non-conceptual wisdom. Regarding the characteristics, names, and divisions of elimination, first is the division of names. Elimination has three aspects: characteristics, names, and divisions. The first is: other-reversal is the characteristic of elimination. The second is names: Merely categories of names, such as: elimination, other-elimination, other-reversal, general characteristic, general, meaning of sound, mixture, relation, determination, reversal, etc. These are acknowledged according to the words of the root and commentary, although the first four have the same meaning, the rest are not, because they need to be distinguished in different situations. The third is division, which has two types: division of names and division from the perspective of what is to be negated. The first type is divided into: other-elimination of mind, other-elimination of self-characterized object, and other-elimination of non-affirmation. The first type is further divided into two types of characteristics. The first is: the meaning of sound established from the perspective of cutting off actual contradiction by the sound concept that is the object of itself, that is its characteristic. Mind-elimination, sound-elimination, general meaning, general sound, sound-meaning, etc., have the same meaning. The second type is divided into: other-elimination of mind that relies on real objects and other-elimination of mind that relies on non-real objects. These two have four aspects: characteristics, names, divisions, and summarizing the key points on the basis of the characteristics. The first is: the meaning of sound that relies on real objects, or the meaning of sound that appears as having the form of real objects to the self-grasping concept, is the characteristic of other-elimination of mind that relies on real objects. The characteristic of the second type is the opposite of this, and can be understood. The second is the category of names: other-elimination of mind that relies on real objects, other-elimination of real objects, and other-elimination of existent phenomena have the same meaning. Other-elimination of mind that relies on non-real objects, other-elimination of non-real objects, and other-elimination of non-existent phenomena have the same meaning. Here, other-elimination of real objects and establishing other-elimination do not have the same meaning, because if it is other-elimination of real objects, then it is pervasive with mind-elimination, but it is not pervasive with establishing other-elimination. If it is other-elimination of non-real objects, then it must not be eliminating other-negation, because if it is other-elimination of non-real objects, then it must be mind-elimination, and the other one must not be. The third is division: other-elimination of real objects is divided into: other-elimination that relies on manifest and hidden real objects. The first is: it acts on the ultimate image that has become the object of the concept led by the manifest perception that guides the self-grasping concept. The second is: subsequent inference, wrong knowledge, doubt. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
