Because it is a substance. Secondly, does the general tree arise from the cause of the leaves or not? If it does not arise, then the general tree, as a subject, should not be the same substance as the leaves, because it does not arise from its cause. If it arises, then if the cause of the leaves is refuted, you should also be refuted. Thirdly, when the leaves arise and cease, does the general tree arise and cease? If it does not arise and cease, then the general tree should not be the same substance as the leaves. If it does, then when the leaves arise and cease, the manifest trees that contradict the leaves in place, time, and form should also arise and cease, because the general tree that is the same substance as them arises and ceases. Having refuted the views of others in this way, our own view is that generalities and particulars are pervaded by non-things. It is said that trees, forms, and sounds are not generalities. Regarding the way to avoid the previous faults, if the tree is established as a substance, is it the same substance as the leaves or a different substance? This can be asked in the same way as asking, 'Is the valid cognition perception or inference?' If the valid cognition that becomes conceptual is inference, and the valid cognition that becomes non-conceptual is perception, and because there is no other valid cognition other than these two, then it can be said in the same way, 'Then, the tree that becomes a leaf is the same substance as the leaf; the tree that is not a leaf is a different substance from the leaf, and there is no other tree other than these two.' etc. In addition, it also refutes the indivisibility of general manifestations, the identity of substances without distinction, and the identity of aggregate substances.' etc. In the conclusion of stating faults, admitting that 'one substance is not pervaded by the identity of aggregate substances' requires admitting permanent entities, because two objects that currently exist in one substance, in the second moment, one disappears, and the other remains.' etc. Therefore, even if a substance is established, it is not pervaded by 'being the same substance' and 'being a different substance', but the faults of the above analysis and refutation of whether the general manifestation is the same substance or a different substance do not apply to oneself, because others admit that the tree is a generality that follows the manifest trees, and is also established as a substance, which is a common basis. But we, although we admit that the tree is established as a substance, do not admit that it is a generality that follows the manifest trees.' etc. In addition, in the *Distinguishing the Essence of Cognition* (Tibetan: རྟོག་སྙིང་, Wylie: *rtog snying*) etc. by Pal Shakya Chokden (Tibetan: དཔལ་ཤཱཀྱ་མཆོག་ལྡན, Wylie: *dpal shAkya mchog ldan*, meaning 'Glorious Shakya Supreme Giver'), it is also written in detail: 'Scholars unanimously agree that one substance is pervaded by the identity of aggregate substances, and they admit that trees etc. are things, but do not consider them to be generalities.' etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These points should be examined by the wise. Upon examining these points with wisdom, all faults cast upon the other revert to oneself. There are three aspects to this: inferring similarity, countering with actual faults, and exposing weaknesses with crucial instructions. The first is, then, for yourself as well, since it is clearly stated in this treasury of reasoning that inference (anumāna) and direct perception (pratyakṣa) are the same entity, the three faults of examining essence, cause, arising, and ceasing can be turned back upon you. So, is inference the entity of direct perception or not? If not, then the subject of inference should not be the same entity as direct perception, because you are not its entity. If according to the latter case, then inference should not be conceptual thought (kalpanā), because it is the same entity as direct perception. The strength of these three is equal. Furthermore, is inference born from the cause of direct perception or not? If not born, then the subject of inference should not be the same entity as direct perception, because it is not born from its cause. Do you remember all three of these? If born, then direct perception should also be born from the cause of inference, since the two, direct perception and inference, are the same entity. If this is accepted, then the subject of direct perception, if the cause of inference is negated, you must also be negated, because you are born from its cause. If this is accepted, then in whatever continuum inference is negated, direct perception must also be negated, because you accept this. If this is accepted, then the cause of dying tomorrow, direct perception will be negated, because inference is negated in its continuum. The strength of these three is equal. Moreover, do inference and direct perception arise and cease simultaneously? If not, then inference should not be the same entity as direct perception, because it does not arise and cease simultaneously with it. Please remember all three of these. If they do arise and cease simultaneously, then at the time of the cessation of inference, all direct perceptions that contradict inference in time or place should also cease, because direct perception ceases at the time of the cessation of inference. The strength of these three is equal. The second point, countering with actual faults, is: then for you, the subject of the tree, you should arise and cease simultaneously with a curse (śāpa), because you and the curse are the same entity. If you accept this, please remember where all the faults you cast earlier have gone. If the sign is not established, then the subject of the tree, you should be the same entity as the curse, because you and it are an established homogeneous entity, you and it are an established homogeneous entity, or you are any different entity distinguished by an established homogeneous entity from it. Because it is not the latter case. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
