LG28 Instructions of Luk Zhug Gyatso: Explanation of the Third Chapter of 'Rig Ter': Third, How the Mind Cognizes Objects, Explanation of General and Specific Objects. Explanation of the Third Chapter of 'Rig Ter': Third, How the Mind Cognizes Objects, Explanation of General and Specific Objects. Common Explanation of Object and Subject. In the commentary on 'Tsema Rigpai Ter' (Treasury of Reasoning) called 'Nekyi Nyingpo Salje' (Clarifying the Essence of Key Points), there is an examination of generalities and particulars, which is the explanation of the third chapter. Generality and Particularity, like the driver of the sun, swiftly come to the realm of all-illuminating knowledge. May the hundred rays of the five sciences protect me from the darkness of improper ways. Third, explaining how the mind cognizes objects, there are four parts: explaining general and specific objects; explaining the manner of grasping, appearance, and elimination; explaining the auxiliary, the expressible and the expressing; explaining the root, contradiction and relation. The first part has three: common explanation of object and subject; refuting the establishment of substance-negation on the meaning; explanation of the difference between general and specific. The first part has two: general presentation of the nature of the object; and explanation of how to establish that nature. The first is: The mind that clearly grasps the self-character is non-conceptual wisdom, because it is a knowing that has clear appearance. The mind that does not clearly grasp the general character is conceptual thought, because it is a mind that grasps its object in the manner of a general meaning. The self-character is a thing, because it is able to perform a function. The general character is not a thing, because it is not able to perform a function. Thus it is explained: 'Grasping the self-character is non-conceptual wisdom,' etc., one verse, and in its self-commentary, it is mentioned: 'Self-character,' 'clarity,' 'thing,' 'substance,' 'negation,' 'ultimate,' etc., refer to the ability to perform a function, the non-mixture of substances, the composition of cause and effect, the object of acceptance and rejection for all beings, and therefore have the same meaning as 'thing'. 'Generality,' 'other-exclusion,' 'negation,' 'discrimination,' 'mixture,' 'relation,' 'conventional,' etc., refer to not existing on the meaning, not being established as a thing, not being an object of the senses, being fabricated by the mind, etc. So, can we accept those explanations of the synonyms of generality and self-character in the self-commentary as they are? This needs to be distinguished: if it is a generality distinguished from the two, generality and particularity, then it is not pervasive of the non-existent. If it is a generality distinguished from the two, generality and clarity, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If 'Generality' is 'non-existent', it is because universality encompasses 'Generality'. This is because the key to considering the 'Generality' that distinguishes between 'Generality' and 'Clarity' as 'the aspect of Generality'. Therefore, the 'Clarity' that distinguishes between the two also necessarily encompasses 'Self-character'. Therefore, for 'Clarity', there are two situations: one is that 'Clarity' is regarded as 'Individual', and the other is that 'Clarity' is regarded as 'Self-character'. This is because the 'Generality' derived from 'Clarity' has one that is regarded as 'Generality' and another that is regarded as 'the aspect of Generality', totaling two situations. Similarly, the 'Reversal' that distinguishes between 'Reversal' and 'Return' encompasses 'Self-character', while 'Return' encompasses 'the aspect of Generality'. This is because the 'Reversal' that distinguishes between the two is regarded as 'Substance', while 'Return' is regarded as 'Other-exclusion'. Generally speaking, 'Reversal' does not necessarily encompass 'Self-character', and 'Return' does not necessarily encompass 'the aspect of Generality'. This is because, in the case of distinguishing between 'Dharma' and 'Dharmin', and regarding 'Dharmin' as 'Reversal' and 'Dharma' as 'Return', there is also such a situation. Generally speaking, 'Real existence' encompasses 'Self-character', and 'Nominal existence' encompasses 'the aspect of Generality'. However, when distinguishing between 'Character' and 'Characterized', 'Real existence' does not necessarily encompass 'Self-character'. This is because the 'Nominal existence' derived from 'Definition' is regarded as all 'Characterized', while the 'Real existence' derived from 'Characterized' is regarded as all 'Definition'. Generally speaking, 'Thing' and 'Substance' encompass 'Self-character'. However, when mentioning 'the sound expressing things' and 'the sound expressing substance', 'Thing' and 'Substance' are respectively regarded as 'Characteristic' and 'the basis of Characteristic'. The key to this principle lies in, Sakya Pandita's (Sa-skya Pandita, one of the founders of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism) view is supreme. As he said in his auto-commentary: 'Then, for it, there are also the statements of "excluding from others" and "reversing from others".' and 'Everything is expressed as substance and thing.' If someone says that this contradicts the above statement, it is not contradictory. Because 'Reversal' and 'Thing' have two situations: one is that it exists in meaning, and the other is that it becomes the object of exclusion. If someone asks: 'I want to explain according to the scriptures.' As the explanation in the Thirteen Treatises says: 'Return, Generality, Individuality, and Other-exclusion, etc., do not exist in meaning, but are fabricated by the mind, without the duality of appearance and non-appearance.' Then, isn't it said that all Return, Generality, Individuality, etc. encompass 'non-existent'? This is not a mistake, because the purpose of saying that 'Return' encompasses 'non-existent' is, as mentioned earlier, referring to the 'Return' that distinguishes between 'Reversal' and 'Return'. And saying that 'Generality' and 'Individuality' etc. are 'non-existent' is based on the degree of speculation. For example, speculating that the bottle is gold --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
