Furthermore, generally speaking about the universal characteristic, for example, when observing, judging a pot as 'not a pot' and merely appearing as a pot, that is its universal characteristic. 2-878 In terms of observation, merely excluding a golden pot is its particular characteristic. This point must be understood. Because below, it is said that the general characteristic pervades all three: name, referent, and basis, which refers to the name, referent, and basis in terms of observation. I will explain it this way. The second point is: substance and negation, general and particular, ways of grasping, appearance and exclusion, subject and conceptual and non-conceptual classifications, these as the subject of debate, you have a way of explaining, just like the treatises of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti, explaining them separately without mixing them up. This is what is to be explained. Substance and negation, general and particular, etc., this is one verse. Refuting the establishment of substance and negation in meaning: The second of the root verses is: the subsequent inference, as the subject of debate, you are not established by appearing as the substance part of 'produced' and 'impermanent' on the pot, because you are not established by establishing it. Therefore, you are established by separating the negation parts of 'produced' and 'impermanent' on the pot, because you are established by exclusion. This is what is to be explained. Subsequent inference does not grasp substance, etc., this is one verse. Here, in the self-commentary, refuting the establishment of substance and negation in meaning. The made chapter is not to refute the establishment of substance's own characteristic in meaning, 2-879 but to refute the view that when wanting to understand the basis of the collection of multiple negations, the respective characteristics of substance and negation are described as negation, and then any characteristic basis is summarized as the nature of substance, this point must be understood. Explaining the difference, general and particular: Explaining the meaning of the words of the treatise: Third, explaining the general and particular: explaining the meaning of the words of the treatise, and determining through reasoning. First is: thing, as the subject of debate, your single negation that is opposite to non-things of different kinds, is the definition of the general characteristic of things, because its meaning is negation. Entity, as the subject of debate, your collection of two negations that are opposite to non-things of different kinds and also opposite to knowledge of the same kind as things, is the definition of the particular characteristic of entities, because its meaning is negation. General and particular, as the subject of debate, you can be divided into two kinds, namely direct general and particular, and higher general and particular. Direct particulars, sandalwood and agarwood, as the subject of debate, are different things, because they arise from different causes and conditions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because wood is a distinct entity. The difference of the former, the two moments of candana (sandalwood) before and after, are the subject (chos can, topic), and are the otherness (tha dad, difference) that negates sameness, Because when you two are established as one entity, the other does not exist as an entity.' This explains 'from other and self entities' etc., two and a half verses. Second, to ascertain it with reason. Regarding ascertaining it, the elucidators of the Sakya teachings, the Yak Rong brothers, hold that: grasping the sound of the commentary, in generalities (spyi, universals) and particulars (bye brag, particulars), they acknowledge that permanence (rtag, eternal) pervades everything, therefore, the key point is that form (gzugs, color), sound (sgra, sound), etc., are also generalities, therefore they are permanent. Later, the Goshak brothers, who upheld the treasures of the teachings of both discipline and reason, hold that: grasping the sound of the commentary, they acknowledge that generality pervades generality, particularity, reverse, etc., but form, sound, etc., are not generalities. Therefore, these two scholars are supreme beings who flawlessly uphold the explanatory tradition of this treatise. And the fearless Bodongpa, because he prides himself on being skilled in refuting this treatise, is a debater. The sparks of these three scholars' words should be determined with abundant words, while others collecting the dregs of wisdom, laboring with debate, is like exhausting the essence of leisure and affluence with chaff, therefore it is appropriate to remain neutral. Regarding this, the wise and meaningful scholar, the omniscient Gowo Rabjampa, explained it this way in the 'Clear Explanation of the Seven Treatises': The previous commentary sounds are all explained as one meaning, and the definition of the commonly appearing imputed generality is: divided into three types: class generality, meaning generality, and aggregate generality. The order of the definitions is: in relation to their respective appearances, the imputed generality that appears as a single reverse from different classes is the first definition; the imputed generality that is mistaken as one appearing imputation is the second definition; the imputed generality that appears coarse from the aggregation of multiple dust particles is the third definition. Therefore, if a dharma is its particular, then the dharma is not necessarily it, just as the meaning generality of Shapa appearing in the conceptualization of grasping wood, is a particular in relation to the wood generality, but is not the wood generality. If you are the generality of a dharma, then the dharma is also not necessarily you, just as the reverse of wood is the generality of wood, but wood is not its reverse. Nowadays, if Tibetans are entities, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
