Because you are the mind that holds the general concept of a tree, which is a single substance without parts, related to all clear trees. If it is said that this is not pervasive, because holding the general meaning of a tree that is a single substance without parts from all clear trees becomes conceptual thought, but holding the general type of tree that is a single substance without parts from all clear trees does not become conceptual thought either. This statement is unreasonable, because wanting that kind of general type that is not included in the general meaning is like wanting an ocean that does not contain water, which is the babbling of someone intoxicated by the poisonous water of a bad teacher. Also, sandalwood and zantan are the same substance, because sandalwood and zantan are the same substance as the general tree that is a single substance without parts from sandalwood and zantan. Regarding this statement, the Pramāṇasamuccaya says: 'If the general and the particular are the same substance,' etc., one verse, and in the self-commentary it says: 'If holding the general meaning is conceptual thought, but not holding the general type.' If one thinks that wanting a general type that is not included in the general meaning is like wanting an ocean that is not water, this is the babbling of someone intoxicated by the poisonous water of a bad teacher.' etc. The second part of the root text refutes the view that multiple generals are considered to be indivisible from particulars: 'Related to each particular.' etc. The third part refutes similar generals: 'One general with similar characteristics.' etc. Now, to establish one's own system that one wishes to refute, and to eliminate others' disputes about it. The second part of the root text, establishing one's own system: 'In the face of conceptual thought, what is not an entity is merely an exclusion.' Having the characteristic, you are the general of exclusion, because you are the general meaning that follows (pervades) all entities. Explaining, 'Not that nature, but returning from nature.' etc., one verse. The third part, eliminating disputes: If the particular is established, the general is established, which is the cause of nature; if the general is not established, the particular is not established, which is the cause of the non-apprehension of the pervasive cause, then this distinction is unreasonable, because in the face of conceptual thought, after non-entities are excluded, merely appearing as entities is just an imputation. This is not pervasive, because although the general and the particular are nominally imputed, the nominal general and particular are the characteristics of the general, by thinking that the inferred general and particular are the self-characteristic, thereby entering, thus being able to obtain the self-characteristic of the place of entry. Explaining, 'If in reality there is no general.' etc., two verses. Therefore, for the distinction between general and particular, there is a way to distinguish between correct and incorrect, if one does not distinguish between the entry of explanation and the surface of inference, and thinks that the general is clear and the entities are different, this is the view of the owl chick or the Vaiśeṣika school.

To consider the partless substance as one is the view of the Samkhya and the aggregation schools. Although there may be self-characteristics in the differences of arising and measuring, to establish only other-exclusion in the general differences of ceasing and past measurements is the view of the wise Sakya Pandita, my own school. To this explanation, a verse such as 'The owlet who asserts the generality of difference' appeared. Here, to address some doubts that are close at hand, in the course of refuting the Samkhya, the auto-commentary states: 'Furthermore, some Tibetans assert in agreement that for the differences of wood, shala trees, sandalwood, etc., there is a generality called 'wood'; for the differences of blue such as lapis lazuli, there is a generality called 'blue'; similarly, for cow, yak, etc., there is a generality called 'cow'. They proclaim in agreement that these generalities exist as one without difference in the particulars. The Samkhyas and these Tibetans who assert this are in agreement.' And so on. Also, there are statements such as 'The Samkhyas say the substance is one, and the Tibetans follow them.' Having accepted wood and shala as general and particular, and asserting that the two are one substance, they first establish this as a common ground with the Samkhyas, and then refute it. In refuting it, they employ valid reasons such as 'the sign of the visible not being observed,' and enumerate many types of reasoning such as 'it would follow that arising and ceasing occur simultaneously.' In examining other-exclusion, it is said: 'Most Tibetans consider the negation of a thing to be the thing itself. If that is so, the faults of generality are difficult to avoid.' If one asserts that a thing itself is the thing, then the reasons for refuting the single, clear, one substance clearly rebound upon oneself. Some, such as 'yak wool,' according to the literal meaning, assert that the thing itself and wood, etc., are permanent. Some later ones say, 'They have refuted the generality that has become non-substantial, appearing as one substance, but they have not refuted that which has become substantial.' Thus they speak irresponsibly. Some say that even for that which has become substantial, they have refuted the generality appearing as an undifferentiated one substance, and the group established as one substance, etc. The all-knowing master of wisdom, in the 'Clear Light on the Seven Treatises,' explains the method of refuting others' views, the method of establishing one's own views, and the method of avoiding faults in this way. Regarding the assertion of the generality appearing as one substance, the first of the three refutations, examined from the aspects of essence, cause, arising, and ceasing, is: Is the generality of wood the substance of the shala tree or not? If not, then it follows that it is not one substance with it, because it is not its substance. If it is, then it follows that the shugpa tree is not wood, because the generality of wood is not the substance of the shala tree. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
