When measuring a self-characteristic by the nature of another, the second characteristic of self-characteristic must be established as the object of measurement for universals. For example, when understanding the impermanence of sound through the inference 'sound is impermanent,' in the aspect of assumption, the impermanence of sound is a self-characteristic; while in the aspect of conclusion, the universal of the impermanence of sound becomes the object of measurement. Now, since it has already been established that valid cognition is definitively two types—perception and inference—by stating 'the object of measurement is definitively self-characteristic, being either manifest or hidden,' what necessity or function is there in adding the characteristic 'the object of measurement is definitively two types—self-characteristic and universal?' This is because, due to the reason that the object of measurement by way of entering—the self-characteristic—has two aspects, manifest and hidden, it can be inferred that, in general, the object of measurement has two aspects, self-characteristic and universal. When measuring a hidden object of entry by relying on a sign, the universal of that hidden object is already established as the object of measurement. It is essential to remember this point. These points are the essence, the condensed quintessence of both types of treatises on valid cognition. As the auto-commentary states: 'Self-characteristic and universal by way of entering,' it is not that two objects of measurement are spoken of as two because there are two objects, but rather it is with regard to the manner of measurement, that is, the manifest self-characteristic is measured by itself, and the hidden self-characteristic is measured by another. As stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'For the understanding of the nature of self and other, the object of measurement is considered to be two.' And 'Because there are two objects of measurement, there are two valid cognitions, due to the ability and inability to perform a function.' In the second refutation of the root text, the opponent argues: Continuing from the admission that the universal is an object of measurement, the two moons appearing to the sense consciousness of double vision should be a third object of measurement, since the universal of a pot is the second object of measurement by way of entering. The opponent claims that these two are equally not self-characteristics. In response, we say: This is not universally true, because there is no necessity or function in establishing a non-existent thing as an object of measurement, whereas there is a necessity or function in establishing a universal as an object of measurement. The opponent asks: Why is it said that there is no necessity in establishing a non-existent thing as an object of measurement? We reply: Because with regard to those two moons, there is neither adherence to the belief that they are self-characteristic moons, nor entry, nor attainment. If there were, then the sense consciousness of double vision would become a third valid cognition, which is a fault. To establish the second reason, we propose: The universal of the impermanence of sound, as the subject of discussion, it is necessary to establish it as an object of measurement, because even though you are not the self-characteristic of the impermanence of sound, the valid cognition that measures you adheres to and enters into the impermanence of sound, and therefore is able to attain the object of entry—the self-characteristic of the impermanence of sound. So, what is the use of establishing a non-existent thing as an object of measurement?
