If it does not appear in the (mind's) cognition, then it is not the (mind's) object, because they do not understand each other, so it is impossible to understand the meaning.' This statement is a place to be examined. It shows that if the image of something does not appear in a certain mind, then it is not the object of that mind; and if the image appears, then it must be the non-common object of that mind. Therefore, it cannot be admitted, because each person's root consciousness has a common apprehended object, and there are also common appearing objects and acting objects. Moreover, according to the view of those who hold self-awareness to be without aspects, there would be the fault of self-awareness having no object. Quoting this passage as an argument, Khenchen Yakphuk Sangye Pel and Panchen Ngodrup Pelbar and others said that self-awareness has no object. But this still does not solve the difficulty, because the statement 'If it appears in one's own mind, then it is one's own object' shows that if the image of a certain object appears in a certain mind, then that object is the non-common object of that mind. And the statement 'If it does not appear, then it is not an object' shows that if the image of a certain object does not appear in a certain mind, then that object is not the object of that mind. If you think so, then whether you analyze or not, there is a common apprehended object. Although there is no common appearing object when analyzing, it is said that a common appearing object is admitted when not analyzing, which leads to a mass of contradictions. In my opinion, this is merely revealing the contradiction in the previous view, because this can be known from what has been said before. Second, regarding our own system, the object to be measured of the apprehended object is definitely only one own-characteristic, because it has already been prevented that generalities and unconditioned things are apprehended objects. Then, someone might think that when explaining the divisions of objects in our own system, the statement 'If it is an apprehended object, then it must be an own-characteristic' is completely irrelevant, because no division of objects has been explained. In response, when the author of the Treasury of Logic (Rikter) explains the divisions of objects, he says: 'The object to be measured is only one own-characteristic.' This statement is not without distinction, because it is mainly to prevent the previous view from holding that there are three apprehended objects, so that people can understand that the apprehended object of our own system is only one own-characteristic. And the division of objects into three: apprehended object, object of attachment, and acting object, is only a distinction from the perspective of how different minds act on the one own-characteristic apprehended object, and there is actually no different thing. In general, the division of the object to be measured into two is also a distinction from the perspective of the situation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, in order to understand the classification of measurable objects, it is necessary to understand this. How is this understood? For example, in the case of the sense-sphere of form (gzugs kyi skye mched), there is a reason for it to be established in three domains, because when measuring with direct perception (mngon sum) by the self-grasping awareness (rang 'dzin don rig), it is the object of apprehension (gzung yul); when measuring covertly with subsequent inference (rjes dpag) that measures itself, it is the object of attachment (zhen yul); because relying on these two methods of measurement, people's actions are not deceived, it becomes the object of action ('jug yul). This is what is explained. It says: 'The measurable object is only the own-character (rang mtshan).' And in the self-commentary, it says: 'If the own-character is measured directly, it is the object of apprehension; if it is measured covertly, it is the object of attachment; and both are objects of action because people's actions are not deceived.' Refuting arguments: Refuting the argument that mistaken consciousness ('khrul shes) has no object of apprehension. The third part is refuting arguments, which is divided into two parts: refuting the argument that mistaken consciousness has no object of apprehension; refuting the argument that the object of apprehension is only the own-character. The first part has four points: refuting the view that contradicts the scriptures; refuting the view that is the same as others; refuting the view that contradicts experience; refuting the fallacy that the negation cannot be established by valid cognition. The first point is: Someone says that Master Dignāga (Phyogs glang) said: 'Two characteristics are measurable.' It is unreasonable to divide the measurable object into two, own-character and universal (spyi), because if it is an object of apprehension, then it must be an own-character. This is not pervasive, because Dignāga and his sons (Phyogs glang yab sras) did not say that there are two measurable objects because the measurable object of apprehension has two, own-character and universal, but only because, for the own-character alone, through the function of two methods of measurement, it is said that there are two measurable objects. Because the own-character is established as a measurable object through direct perception or through measuring the essence of itself directly; from the perspective of measuring covertly in the manner of a universal through subsequent inference, the universal is established as a measurable object. This is what is explained. It says: 'If it is thought that there are two objects, will this cause harm?' 'From the perspective of the mode of operation, there are two, own-character and universal.' Such root verses and explanations appear. Here, some people think that the measurable object being pervaded by the own-character is the view of Sakya Paṇḍita (Sa skya paNDi ta), which is unreasonable, because this contradicts the self-tradition's acceptance that the universal is a measurable object from the perspective of the method of measurement, and if the universal is not a measurable object, then it is impossible to avoid subsequent inference not being valid cognition. Others think that the object of action being pervaded by the own-character is the view of this text, which is also unreasonable, because whatever valid reason (rtags) and whatever is to be proven (bsgrub bya) must be determined as the object of action of the subsequent inference of the subject (rtags can), otherwise... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
