Because this would lead to the truly existent (yang dag, true) to be pervaded by its own characteristic. Then, if you admit that the object of apprehension (zung yul, object) is pervaded by its own characteristic, then in the debate and response regarding 'the measurable (gzhal bya, measurable) is divided into two,' in terms of the way of entering, saying that both own-characteristic and general characteristic are objects of apprehension, there is no connection between these two. 2-719 Because raising the fault that the object of apprehension being pervaded by its own characteristic contradicts 'the measurable being divided into two' is not the behavior of a wise person. Moreover, the response to this is also merely: 'In general, the measurable is divided into two, but it was not said that the object of apprehension is divided into two' is sufficient. Furthermore, in the 'Self-Commentary' (rang 'grel, self-commentary) it says: 'The measurable is only own-characteristic.' Among them it says: 'The object of consciousness is only its own characteristic, therefore, all acceptance and rejection depend on the presence or absence of its own characteristic.' Because for things that cannot function, there is no needed utility, so it is not involved. As the 'Commentary on Valid Cognition' (rnam 'grel, commentary on valid cognition) says: 'Own-characteristic is the only measure, both presence and absence are examined. The task to be done is accomplished from this.' And 'Because absence is not measurable, if you say it is unique, I also agree.' Therefore, these treatises on valid cognition must be integrated. If you ask: 'Is the directly shown measurable of these treatises on valid cognition also necessarily the own-characteristic of the object of apprehension?' The reason why we need to debate and respond to the object of apprehension being pervaded by its own characteristic is because it is necessary to understand the key points of the former. Because it has been admitted that the object of apprehension does not have both own-characteristic and general characteristic, but rather three. 2-720 Therefore, doubt about the former must arise, and this must be clarified. The two treatises on valid cognition must be integrated in any case, but the directly shown measurable of the two treatises on valid cognition is only own-characteristic and general characteristic, and is not necessarily the object of apprehension. The directly shown measurable of the treatise 'Treasury of Reasoning' (rigs gter, treasury of reasoning) must be only the object of apprehension, because this is the occasion for refuting the former's view that the object of apprehension is three, and establishing the self-view that the object of apprehension is only one own-characteristic. Therefore, if the essence of both valid cognition is distilled, it is like this: Earlier, in general, the measurable was divided into own-characteristic and general characteristic, and also, if from the perspective of the state of affairs the measurable is summarized as only one own-characteristic, then, the measurable is not necessarily both own-characteristic and general characteristic, because from the perspective of the state of affairs the measurable is summarized as only one own-characteristic. If you say this, it is not pervasive, because when measuring the measurable of the state of affairs with a valid cognition, is it measured by its own nature, or by the nature of another? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Besides the two ways of measuring, there is no third way of intervening. When measuring with the self-nature of others, the universal characteristic (spyi mtshan) must be taken as the object of measurement. The first argument is established because the things to be measured are necessarily divided into two types: manifest and hidden. Manifest things are measured by their own self-nature, while hidden things are measured by the self-nature of others. So, what are these two types of measurable things, manifest and hidden? How do they intervene through their own and others' self-nature? The objects of perception, such as form and sound, are manifest objects of measurement because they can be determined by the direct sensory consciousness (tshur mthong dbang mngon), thus enabling the derivation of definite knowledge. All specific characteristics (rang mtshan) other than the five objects are hidden objects of measurement because they cannot be determined by direct sensory consciousness and must rely on the signs (rtags) of others to derive definite knowledge. As stated in the 'Commentary on Valid Cognition' (rnam 'grel): 'For the wisdom that arises from the function of things, with concomitance and reversal, there is autonomous grasping of it; the sensory consciousness beyond this, the unseen self-nature essence, is the basis for realizing other things.' Regarding the way of realizing through one's own and others' self-nature, the 'Clear Explanation of the Seven Treatises' (sde bdun rab gsal) states: 'For self-nature, the form of giving certainty from one's own side is called establishing as one's own self-nature; establishing the specific characteristic itself as one's own self-nature. The former is the meaning of the self-characteristic of things (don rang mtshan), and the latter is the meaning of the self-nature of consciousness (shes pa rang mtshan).' If it is said that the former should not be the self-nature of the self of things, because it is a different entity from things, then there is no fault, because it is the form of giving certainty from one's own side, so it is named with the name of one's own self-nature. The form that appears in conceptual thought (rtog pa) is not given certainty from one's own side, but is the form established by the habits (bag chags) of others, so it is called the self-nature of others.' If this key point is not understood, then the meaning of scriptures such as 'This is the self-nature of oneself and others' will not be found even after a long time. The above is what has been said. Let's analyze it a bit: If it is said that the form appearing in the subsequent inference (rjes dpag) that sound is impermanent should be the universal characteristic of the impermanence of sound, because it is the self-nature of others that appears when realizing impermanence through the self-nature of others. Then, According to our view, the direct sensory consciousness that grasps form realizes form through its own self-nature because it realizes it through the way of making form itself appear directly. The subsequent inference that sound is impermanent realizes that sound is impermanent through the self-nature of others because it realizes it through the way of making the universal characteristic of the impermanence of sound appear. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
