Q: What is a knowledge that possesses two characteristics? A: It is a non-erroneous consciousness, because it is a consciousness that possesses an object of apprehension. If someone objects, 'That is not pervasive, because the consciousness that apprehends a speckled rope as a snake, although it possesses an object of apprehension, is erroneous.' To that, a discriminating answer is given: The conceptual thought that apprehends a speckled rope as a snake, you do not have an object of apprehension, because you are a mistaken consciousness. The eye consciousness that sees the color of the speckled rope, you are a non-erroneous consciousness, because you are a consciousness that possesses an object of apprehension.' From 'General meaning and non-existence, both appear,' to 'Because there is no object, the apprehension of a snake is mistaken,' is explained in detail. To this, Panchen Shakya Chokden says in the commentary on the 'Treasure of Reasoning': 'Others say that the sense consciousness that perceives two moons is non-erroneous, because it possesses an object of apprehension.' This fault is somewhat difficult to avoid. The answer to this is similar to the previous one. From the perspective of the appearance of the moon, it both possesses an object of apprehension and is non-erroneous, but the object of apprehension that appears as two is not the moon, but only appears when the sense faculty is corrupted.' This statement is not that of a wise person, because the conceptual thought that apprehends a speckled rope as a snake has corruption, while the sense faculty does not have corruption, so the erroneous and non-erroneous can be distinguished. But when two moons appear, the sense faculty has corruption, so in that sense consciousness, the non-erroneous part cannot be distinguished. Second, if generalities and non-inherent existence can become objects, then other people abiding in that place, when trusting you, should also be able to be seen by any of the five sense consciousnesses, because you are an object of apprehension. If someone objects, 'That is not pervasive, because the lungs and heart inside the body, although they are objects of apprehension, cannot be seen by the eye consciousness of others.' If someone says this, the example is not analogous, because the lungs and heart inside are now obscured, so they are not objects, so even the owner of the body cannot see them with their own eye consciousness. If later there is no obscuration, they can be seen by the eye consciousness of others. And the internal colored sense faculties can never be seen by the eye consciousness, etc.' The above explains the content of 'The two appearing objects are different from consciousness,' etc., three and a half verses. These two main reasons are sufficient to explain the problem. If someone objects, 'Generalities and non-inherent existence, you are also not objects, because you are always related to the consciousness that apprehends you as subject and object.' Then in any case, it is an object. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if one has to admit that it is not so, this also proves that it is not an object of apprehension. Furthermore, there is another fault: the universal of a pot that appears in the mind of the speaker, as the subject, even if you say it, the listener will not understand or comprehend it, because you are only the object of the speaker's mind. This is the real reason. To this, someone retorts: even if the listener does not comprehend the universal of the pot that appears in the mind of the speaker, there is no fault of not comprehending the universal of the pot, because the listener comprehends the universal of the pot that appears in his own mind. If you say so, then when the speaker conveys the name of the pot to the listener, it will not be possible to jointly identify 'this is a pot', because the universal of the pot that appears in the mind of the speaker does not appear in the mind of the listener; similarly, the universal of the pot that appears in the mind of the listener does not appear in the mind of the speaker. To this, someone retorts: it is not non-pervasive, because the two universals of the pot that are speaking and listening are only similar in appearance, because they are attached to the similarity, so they can understand each other. If you say so, then does the universal that appears in the mind of the speaker appear in the mind of the listener? If it appears, then as the subject, you are not only the object of the speaker's mind, because you are the object of the listener's mind, because you appear in it. If it does not appear, then as the subject, you are not the object of the listener's mind, because you do not appear in it. If you answer this, then it is impossible for the speaker and the listener to jointly grasp the pot, because they grasp only the non-common and only different pots. Even if there is no fault in this, because even if they are grasped as different in meaning, the two will mistakenly think they are one, so they can understand each other. If you say so, then the pot-grasping conceptual thought in the listener's continuum, as the subject, you have no object of apprehension, because you are a mistaken consciousness that grasps the different as the same. Therefore, the one who boasts of being a scholar with the three wisdoms (Omniscient Wisdom, Path Wisdom, Base Wisdom), is like a fool who points to the sky with his fingertip and wants to see the sky, because if you examine it with scripture and reason, you will find that they are opponents who claim that the non-existent universal and the non-existent things are the objects of apprehension. Thus it is said: 'Because it is constantly related to oneself, should neither of them be an object?' until 'Seeing the sky, the fool is confused'. Here, in the 'Self-Commentary', 'If it appears in oneself, it is one's own object' it says: 'If it appears in the mind, then the universal related to each person's own mind is each person's own object, therefore it is common.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
