'Hearing is the discriminating consciousness, understanding is the gradual explanation.' Thus it is said that eye consciousness sees form. Here, the initial statement is to say that it is not only eye consciousness that sees form, but to refute the view that both eye consciousness and eye faculty can see form. Some say this. That is nonsense. In the *Abhidharmakośa*, it says: 'Eye and the element of form are one side, it is seeing, there are eight kinds. The eye sees all forms with a basis, it is not the consciousness that relies on it.' The eye faculty sees form, therefore it is established as 'seeing', but eye consciousness does not see form, and there is no reason to establish it as 'seeing', therefore it is not established as 'seeing', which contradicts the above statement. Moreover, the previous quotation follows the Sarvāstivāda school, while this follows the Kashmir Vaibhāṣika school. If one follows the views of the *Chabbisuddhi*, it is said: 'The form that is simultaneous with the manifest faculty is its object, because if it is not simultaneous, it cannot be seen.' If you say so, then the manifest faculty (dharma), you are not the object of the form that is simultaneous with you, because you are not related to it. If you think that it has a simultaneous object that is the cause, then, it (dharma), you do not need a simultaneous object, because you have already been accomplished by your own object that is the cause.' Thus it is explained, in which the words 'object and consciousness are simultaneous' etc. appear. Second, the self-view is: the object of the objective condition, the faculty of the dominant condition, and the mental activity of the immediately preceding condition, when these three are combined, the form aggregate (dharma), you are the result, the object of the manifest form-grasping faculty, because you are the external aggregate that can generate its own likeness. The manifest form-grasping faculty (dharma), although your arising requires three conditions, there is a reason why your arising is similar to the appearance of your objective condition—form, just as food etc. are the cause of the child, but the child will resemble the appearance of either the father or the mother, your arising is similar to your objective condition, this is the nature of things. Therefore, the object—form aggregate (dharma), you have two results, one is as your own result, you are the proximate cause of the second moment of form, thereby making it a material object; the other is as your own result, you are the co-operative condition of the manifest form-grasping faculty, thereby making it consciousness. The key is that the wisdom of the manifest form-grasping faculty (dharma), you also have two ways. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Because you truly bestow the appearance of form, it becomes a way of knowing the object of form; because the appearance is the nature of consciousness itself, it becomes a way of knowing consciousness itself, therefore there are two ways.' This speaks of the half-verse and two lines such as 'Object and root, mental activity'. These are to refute the previous arguments: When admitting the existence of external objects, refute the eternal and real atoms believed by outsiders, as well as the indivisible atoms believed by our own school, and even the coarse inner roots are not the objects to be taken, but the coarse aggregates of external birthplaces are the objects to be taken. Moreover, regarding the taker, refute the Vaibhashika school's belief that the colored roots are the seers, but the five consciousnesses of the doors that have not been contaminated by illusion are those with objects to be taken. Regarding the view, it also refutes the Vaibhashika school's belief that cause and effect are simultaneous, and that they are taken without appearance, but if they can bestow appearance on themselves, even if their own time has passed, they are their own objects to be taken. As stated by Vasubandhu, Dignāga, and Dharmakīrti, the essence of the Sautrāntika school's tenets is summarized and well explained by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. Third, refuting the argument. The most important thing is to examine this point: When admitting that the object of root consciousness is the collection of eight kinds of material dust, then the root consciousness becomes the object of the general. Because it becomes the object of the collection of the general. It cannot be thought of this way, because it is only the object of its own characteristics.' This argument and answer are explained in detail in the *Abhidharmakośa* and the *Pramāṇavārttika*, and like the wise ornaments Gochak brothers, regarding the fundamental tenets of the Vaibhashika and Sutra schools, they believe that the coarse is not a substance, and if it is an object to be taken, it pervades non-coarseness, and pervades only atoms. This statement is completely not the view of the treatise, because in the commentary of the *Kośa*, when raising doubts, it says: 'If this is the case, because of focusing on the general, the five aggregates of consciousness will become the objects of the general, rather than becoming the objects of their own characteristics?' This is what it says. Its meaning is: Root consciousness, dharma, will become the object of the general, because it becomes the consciousness that takes the collection of the general as the object to be taken, because your object to be taken is the collection of eight kinds of material dust, so it is the collection of the general. If you admit it, then you become a consciousness that does not take your own characteristics as the object to be taken, and becomes conceptual thought. Because of that reason.' This is its meaning. To this, the commentary of the *Kośa* says: 'This...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
