One should understand these and other details. Refuting Arguments Against the Self-Characterized Object of Grasping The second refutation of the root argument has two parts: argument and answer. The first part: Objector: Your assertion of a single self-characterized object of grasping is untenable. The external object of grasping has been refuted by the scholars Dignāga and Dharmakīrti, and you do not accept the object of grasping of inner consciousness. The answer has three parts: a general explanation of the distinctions between philosophical systems, establishing the system of the Sugata (Buddha), and how the teacher (Nāgārjuna) established it. The first part: Regarding the establishment of objects of grasping, etc., it is generally necessary to distinguish between philosophical systems and contexts. The nihilistic materialists assert that all phenomena arise without cause, by their own nature. The Īśvaravādins (followers of Īśvara) assert that all containers and contents arise from the mental fluctuations of the great god Īśvara. The Sāṃkhyas assert that all transformations arise from the general principle of Prakṛti. The Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas assert that the bodies and enjoyments of all stable and moving things are established from the accumulation of partless atoms. The Mind-Only school asserts that all containers and contents are established from the mind's appearance due to the awakening of latent impressions. The Madhyamikas assert that no phenomenon is truly established due to the key of dependent origination in conventional terms. The above explanation appears from 'The external object of grasping has been refuted by scholars' to 'each school has different tenets'. The second part: In general, the Sugata's (Buddha's) way of teaching the Dharma has three stages, from which arise four stages of philosophical systems. Without investigation, in accordance with worldly conventions, when teaching the Abhidharma, he accepted the tenet of atoms. Those who hold this tenet are the Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas. With slight investigation, in accordance with conventional truth, when teaching the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra and the Ghanavyūha Sūtra, etc., he refuted external objects and accepted Mind-Only. Those who hold this tenet are the Mind-Only school. With thorough investigation, in accordance with ultimate truth, when teaching the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras, he accepted that all phenomena are without inherent existence and free from elaboration. Those who hold this tenet are established as the Madhyamika school. The auto-commentary says: First, identifying the intention: When the Thubpa (Buddha) investigates external phenomena, he accepts atoms; when he investigates the reality of conventions, he accepts Mind-Only; and when he enters the reality of the ultimate, he enters freedom from elaboration. And so on. The third part: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, regarding the three stages of how the Teacher guides beings to be tamed, four divisions of philosophical tenets arose. Among these, in the context of the *Abhisamayalankara* (Ornament of Clear Realization) along with its seven treatises and the *Ratnagotravibhaga* (Treatise on the Lineage of the Tathagata), the first two stages are established: When affirming the existence of external objects, the tenets of the Vaibhashika school are refuted, and the tenets of the Sautrantika school are established. When negating the existence of external objects, the ultimate true aspectarian consciousness is refuted, and the tenets of the false aspectarian consciousness are established. This is because it is explained in this way. In the auto-commentary, it says: 'How did the Teacher establish the second one? It is through the meaning-consciousness and the aspect-consciousness.' Thus, among the four tenets, the Teacher, when accepting the existence of external objects, acts like a Sautrantika; when the knowledge enters inward, he accepts the non-aspectarian. This statement arose. Therefore, the crucial point that needs to be examined is that the Tibetan translator Ngok Lotsawa (1059-1109) and his followers of Chazang say that the ultimate view of the seven treatises rests in the Prasangika Madhyamaka, which examines worldly conventions. In response, Jamyang Sakya Lodro refutes this, explaining the ultimate view of this text as false aspectarianism. Shakya Chokden (1428-1507), who has a broad view, says that the ultimate intention of Maitreya and Asanga and their followers is to abide in the Madhyamaka of Other-Emptiness. As it says in the *Mahayanasutralankara* (Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras): 'Having realized with intelligence that there is nothing other than mind, then one also realizes that mind itself is non-existent.' And: 'Because one is non-existent, the other also becomes non-existent.' The *Pramanavarttika* (Commentary on Valid Cognition) says: 'If one is non-existent, both will be destroyed.' In this text, it says: 'Because meaning is non-existent, so are the aspects.' Because the non-reality of the dualistic mind is explained, the non-dual self-awareness is established as the ultimate. Therefore, the philosophical tenet here is Madhyamaka, which is divided by the four tenet proponents, and not Cittamatra. Because the Cittamatrins, after negating external objects, assert that the consciousness of the appearance of objects is truly established, while here, all consciousness of the appearance of objects is explained as non-real. The difference in names is that in Tibet, it is known as the 'two schools of true and false Cittamatra,' while in the noble land of India, they are known as 'Cittamatra' and 'Yogacara Madhyamaka.' This is how it is explained. This is a phenomenon of not distinguishing between realists and Madhyamikas, because those who accept the true establishment of things must be called realists, and those who realize that all phenomena are without true existence and do not accept truly established phenomena must be called Madhyamikas, and if it is interdependence arising from one's own causes and conditions, then it is necessarily truly established. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
