Due to the contradictions, it becomes difficult to understand both the Jñānaprasthāna and the Vibhasa. The Vaibhāṣika school asserts: 'The paramāṇu (atom) is not corporeal, and the smallest unit of corporeal matter is the saṃghāta-paramāṇu (aggregate atom), which consists of eight dravyas (substances), thus it is coarse.' Therefore, if a dravya-paramāṇu exists, it must be one of the ten āyatanas (sense bases); and the ten corporeal āyatanas must be coarse. The Sautrāntika school also believes that the ten corporeal āyatanas must be coarse. Therefore, if a dravya-paramāṇu exists, it must not be any of the ten āyatanas. Thus, there are no eight dravyas in a dravya-paramāṇu; if there were, then the gandha-paramāṇu (smell atom), which is a dravya-paramāṇu, would necessarily be a substance produced from the aggregation of the four mahābhūtas (great elements). Because it is bhūta-upādāya (derived from the elements), because you are the smell āyatana, because you are the smell atom. If you admit this, then you are not an indivisible paramāṇu. The same reasoning applies to taste, form, etc. If there is a paramāṇu of any of the four great elements, then the tejas (fire) atom must exist simultaneously with the three elements of water, fire, and wind. Because you are the fire element. This is universally true, because the four elements exist inseparably, which is the fundamental tenet of the Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika schools. Therefore, relying on indivisible paramāṇus, when can coarse matter be formed? Only when the eight dravyas are formed simultaneously. Before coarse matter is formed, the classifications of the eight dravyas and the ten corporeal āyatanas cannot be established. I say this, and will explain it in order below. Third, regarding the ālambana (object of apprehension), there are three points: First, to know through apprehension; Second, to classify as: arthānusāri-vikalpa (concept conforming to meaning), abhidhānārthānusāri (conforming to the meaning of expression), and the individual's object of apprehension; Third, all jñeya (knowable things) can be objects of apprehension. Fourth, regarding the gocara (range of activity), there are three points: First, a puruṣa (person) enters based on the viṣaya-viṣayin arthānusāri (subject-object conforming to meaning); Second, to classify as: pramāṇa (valid cognition), niścaya-jñāna (ascertaining consciousness), conforming to the meaning of expression, and the range of activity of a person; Third, all knowable things. Also, regarding what is known as vastu-viṣaya (real object) and ālambana-viṣaya (object of focus), if you are jñāna (knowledge), then you must have both an object of focus and a real object. This can be refuted as follows: The śabda-nitya-graha-samāropa (superimposition of holding sound as permanent), by its nature, must not have an object of apprehension, because you are a concept that does not conform to meaning. This is universally true. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you accept that, then it must have an object of attachment, because sound is its object of attachment. This is because the superimposition of holding sound to be permanent and the ascertainment of sound being impermanent both focus on sound as their object, attaching in different ways. This is because it has been said that the object of attachment for ascertainment and superimposition is the same. Furthermore, the superimposition of grasping the aggregates of appropriation as self, you do not have an object of attachment, because you are a conceptualization that does not accord with reality. If you accept that, then it must have an object of attachment, because the aggregates of appropriation are its object of attachment. As it says in the *Self-Commentary*: 'For example, although the object of attachment is true, the attachment to the aggregates as true is mistaken with respect to the object of attachment; although the object of attachment does not exist as a thing, inferences such as the inference of the non-existence of a rabbit's horn are not mistaken with respect to the object of attachment.' If you say that, then these two citations are not all-pervasive, because these superimpositions merely apply the name 'object of attachment' to the basis that is being attached to. Otherwise, if we subtract from the literal meaning of the citation, then the inference that infers the non-existence of a rabbit's horn is not mistaken with respect to its object of attachment, because the *Self-Commentary* has just been explained. Also, the white conch shell being yellow is the object of apprehension for the eye consciousness that grasps the white conch shell as yellow, because the *Self-Commentary* says: 'Whether or not there is error with respect to the object of apprehension is determined by whether or not the object of apprehension exists as a thing.' Also, the general meaning of sound being impermanent is the object of apprehension for the inference that understands sound to be impermanent, because the *Self-Commentary* says: 'The object of apprehension for inference does not exist, because grasping non-existence is mistaken, but the error itself is a thing.' If you accept these two consequences, then you must be the substantial cause of these two, because you are the object of apprehension for these two. This is pervasive, because it has been said: 'Apart from the thing that is the cause, there is nothing else that is called the apprehended.' So, what do you think is the meaning of these two citations? The meaning of the former citation is that the name 'object of apprehension' is applied to the appearing object of non-conceptual mistaken consciousness; the latter citation applies the name 'object of apprehension' to the appearing object of inference, and says that it does not exist as a thing, and that grasping non-existence is correct. Also, the conceptualization that grasps the pot as non-existent, you do not have an object of attachment, because you are a conceptualization that does not accord with reality. If you accept that, then it must have an object of attachment, the non-existence of the pot is its object of attachment. So, what is the object of attachment for the non-existence of the pot? Because it exists. First, it is its primary object, because... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
