Refutation: If it is said, 'The Sarvastivada, which asserts the reality of things, is the root of the realists; if that is the case, then whatever is truly existent must be empty, which is the root of the Madhyamaka,' this is because it is clearly seen by those with wisdom. If someone says, 'Even so, we, the false Madhyamikas, do not accept the truly existent dependent origination, because we accept all other-powered things as empty.' Then, in your commentary on the Pramanavarttika, the non-dual wisdom that you ultimately accept, both accepting it as the impermanence that perishes in an instant and as the constant, is unreasonable, because that wisdom is not a dependent origination produced by cause. Do you remember these three points? The key is that in these sections of the middle three of the Five Treatises of Maitreya, namely the Abhisamayalankara, the Mahayanasutralankara, and the Madhyantavibhaga, three views are clearly explained: one is the view that after realizing the selflessness of persons (anatman), one has not realized the emptiness of external objects; one is the view that even if one realizes the emptiness of external objects, one has not realized the emptiness of the root consciousness that appears as external objects; and one is the view that even if one realizes these are empty, one has not realized the emptiness of the suchness (tathata) of the two emptinesses. Then, for these three views, they are respectively considered: the view of realizing the selflessness of persons, the view of realizing the selflessness of apprehended dharmas, and the view of realizing the selflessness of apprehending dharmas. Moreover, the first view is common to the Sravakayana, the second view is common to the Pratyekabuddhayana, and the third view is the uncommon view of the Mahayana. If this key point is combined with the path of accumulation (prayoga-marga) of the Mahayana, it is: the samadhi of the heat stage (usmagata) obtaining appearance, the samadhi of the peak stage (murdhan) where appearance increases, the samadhi of the forbearance stage (ksanti) realizing non-apprehension, and the samadhi of the highest dharma stage (agradharma) realizing non-grasping. Therefore, below the forbearance stage of the Mahayana's path of accumulation, the superimposition (adhyaropa) of truly grasping external objects is cut off; at the highest dharma stage, the superimposition of reality on the appearance aspect of the consciousness that appears as external objects is cut off, and the conceptual thought (vikalpa) of dualistic appearance disappears. At the time of the path of seeing (darsana-marga), one directly sees the emptiness of the two graspers, and like the sun rising in a clear sky, one realizes the dharmata of luminosity and emptiness. This is the unsurpassed order of progressing on the path of this school. At that time, the view below the forbearance stage of the path of accumulation is the view of the Cittamatra, and the view above the highest dharma stage is the view of the Madhyamaka, and it is reasonable to accept it in this way. Because through wisdom it is known that there is nothing other than the mind, and because one of them does not exist, and because it is separated from one and many, things do not exist. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, the view regarding the term 'that' (Tibetan: དེས་ན།) is: 'All views below the forbearance of the path of joining, and then realizing that even the mind does not exist.' Both of these views will degenerate. Regarding the view of 'no appearance' (Tibetan: རྣམ་པའང་མེད་), it must be established as the view above the supreme dharma of the path of joining. Because that is your own commitment. If you admit it, then according to your system, it is impossible to traverse the five paths of the Mahayana based on the view of Madhyamaka. Because the view below the forbearance of the Mahayana path of joining is the view of the Mind-Only school. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the necessity and particularity of the widely known 'two aspects of true and false Mind-Only' among the later Tibetan and Chinese scholars. Because, merely designating the view below the forbearance of the Mahayana path of joining as the view of 'true aspect' and the view above the supreme dharma as the view of 'false aspect,' there has not been a self-sufficient way to traverse the five paths of the Mahayana based on the views of both true and false aspects. This point is very important, but the previous scholars have neglected it, and the future scholars will find it difficult to discover. If there are intelligent people with suitable fortune, please contemplate it day and night. Establishing the Meaning Now, there are two aspects to be established: the determination of meaning and the determination of appearance. First, the determination of meaning, which has three parts: refutation, establishment, and negation. First, refuting the view of the Vaibhashika school, the Vaibhashikas say: The physical eye sense power with its support is what sees forms, not the eye consciousness. If the eye consciousness could see forms, then it would follow that even obstructed forms could be seen. Therefore, they assert that the form aggregate that arises simultaneously with the eye sense power is its object of apprehension. This is unreasonable, because the eye sense power is inanimate and cannot be the agent of seeing. Moreover, the form that arises simultaneously with it does not have a relationship of arising from it, so it cannot be its object of apprehension. To this, there is a verse: 'Not by interval, consciousness is not the seer of form'. Here, the Vaibhashikas do not accept that eye consciousness takes form as its object, which is incorrect. Because the Abhidharmakosha says: 'Two consciousnesses for the outer five,' meaning that for the outer five sense fields, there are two types of object-possessors: sense consciousness and mind consciousness. For the dharma field, there is only one object-possessor. Also, some say that the Abhidharmakosha says: 'Eye, ear, and mind consciousness, and whatever is experienced by the three, is touch.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
