The types of consciousness are: fundamental consciousness, the consciousness of all seeds, the maturation consciousness, and the grasping consciousness. These six have the same meaning. Thirdly, in terms of classification, there are two parts: the seed aspect of the Ālayavijñāna (ཀུན་གཞི་, आलयविज्ञान, ālayavijñāna, storehouse consciousness) and the maturation aspect of the Ālayavijñāna. These two have the same meaning as the Ālayavijñāna. Its nature, object, aspect, arising, cessation, as well as the differences in retinue and ground, as the verse says: 'Nature, object, aspect, entry, return, retinue, and ground, seven differences.' There are seven in total. First, the difference in nature: whatever is Ālayavijñāna must be neutral. It must be the fruit of maturation. It must be manifest. Among them, it must be the other-knowing mental direct perception. Second, the object: the Ālayavijñāna apprehends all constant and impermanent phenomena without bias. Third, the aspect: the Ālayavijñāna, apprehending its object, which is all constant and impermanent phenomena, has a subtle and unclear aspect. Fourth, the mode of arising: the Ālayavijñāna continuously arises in the state of sentient beings. Because whoever is a sentient being must be a person who possesses the Ālayavijñāna in their continuum. Fifth, the mode of cessation: the Ālayavijñāna will definitely cease after attaining Buddhahood. Because the Ālayavijñāna transforms into mirror-like wisdom. Sixth, the retinue: only the five ever-attending mental factors arise as the retinue of the Ālayavijñāna. Because whatever mental factor arises as its retinue must be one of the five ever-attending ones. Seventh, the difference in ground: the Ālayavijñāna is the same as the ground of the person who possesses their own continuum. If it is the Ālayavijñāna in the continuum of a sentient being in the desire realm, it must be included in the desire realm. If it is the Ālayavijñāna in the continuum of a sentient being in the form realm, it must be included in the form realm. If it is the Ālayavijñāna in the continuum of a sentient being in the formless realm, it must be included in the formless realm. Eighth, the characteristics, classification, and features of afflicted mind. There are three: First, the main consciousness that apprehends its own object—the Ālayavijñāna—and constantly clings to it as 'I', is its characteristic. Second, classification: there are three types of afflicted mind: the afflicted mind of the desire realm, the afflicted mind of the form realm, and the afflicted mind of the formless realm. Third, features: as the verse says: 'Nature, object, aspect, entry, return six, retinue and ground seven differences.' There are seven in total. First, nature: whatever is afflicted mind must be neutral. It must be the aggregate of consciousness. Second, object: the Ālayavijñāna is the object of the afflicted mind. Third, aspect: apprehending the Ālayavijñāna. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

arising from the state of 'I am'. Fourth, the way of engaging: Afflicted mind continuously engages in the state of ordinary beings, because if one is an ordinary being, one must be a person who possesses an afflicted mind. Fifth, the time of cessation: Afflicted mind necessarily ceases upon attaining the Hearer Arhat and upon attaining the Mahayana Path of Seeing, because whether one is a Mahayana Arhat or a Mahayana Noble One, one must be a person who has abandoned the afflicted mind. Sixth, retinue: Only nine mental factors arise as the retinue of the afflicted mind, because if a mental factor arises as the retinue of the afflicted mind, it must be one of the five omnipresent ones, attachment, ignorance, pride, or view. Seventh, the distinction of grounds: The afflicted mind is the same as the ground of the person who possesses it, if it is the afflicted mind in the continuum of a being in the desire realm, then it is necessarily included in the desire realm; if it is the afflicted mind in the continuum of a being in the form realm, then it is necessarily included in the form realm; if it is the afflicted mind in the continuum of a being in the formless realm, then it is necessarily included in the formless realm. Explanation of Mental Factors Second, mental factors have three aspects: definition, classification, and characteristics. Explanation of Definition and Classification First, the definition is: The awareness that sees the distinctions of its own object by its own power. Second, the classifications are: five omnipresent, five object-specific, eleven virtuous such as faith, six root afflictions, twenty secondary afflictions, and four variable ones, totaling fifty-one. First, explaining the five omnipresent ones: As it says, 'Feeling, discrimination, intention, contact, and attention, these are the five omnipresent ones.' These five are: The awareness that experiences pleasure, pain, or indifference by its own power, is the definition of feeling. The classifications are six: feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the eye, similarly, feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the ear, feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the nose, feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the tongue, feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the body, and feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the mind. Among these, any of the first five is necessarily bodily feeling. Bodily feeling and feeling that has become sense consciousness are synonymous. If it is feeling arising from contact from the aggregation of the mind, then it is necessarily mental feeling. Mental feeling and feeling that has become mind consciousness are synonymous. Both bodily feeling and mental feeling have three types: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neutral feeling.
