Collected Teachings of Luju Gyatso LG25 General System of Reasoning 2-565 General System of Reasoning Establishing from the general perspective of objects of knowledge. General System of Reasoning: A Well-Spoken Sunbeam Homage to Buramshingpa, the master of the teachings! Homage to Gyalsé Jampelyang, the eye of the teachings! Homage to Dignāga and Dharmakīrti, the founders of the teachings! Homage to those crown jewels of the teachings, with the crown of my head. Jamyang (འཇམ་དབྱངས།, Mañjughoṣa) himself, the venerable Sakya master! Mañjuśrī (འཇམ་དཔལ།, Mañjuśrī) speech emanation, three hundred thousand of the five sciences! Jamgön (འཇམ་མགོན།, Mañjughoṣa's Protector) emanation, Omniscient Dharma King's feet! May those who please Jamyang (འཇམ་དབྱངས།, Mañjughoṣa) protect me! With the iron thunderbolt of reason, expounding this system of reasoning. Like a treasure of reason, stating the various categories of reason. For the heroes endowed with reason, analyzing with reason. Nāgārjuna), who speaks of reason, will explain here. Here, in explaining the system of reasoning, there are two aspects: establishing from the general perspective of objects of knowledge; and explaining the nature of the subject of cognition—valid cognition (pramāṇa). First, the first part is divided into three points: explaining the scope of objects of knowledge; explaining the subject of cognition—consciousness; and explaining the way in which consciousness cognizes objects. First, explaining the scope of objects of knowledge, including: definition, pervasion and co-existence, and classification. First is the definition: that which is to be cognized by consciousness is the definition of an object of knowledge. Second is pervasion and co-existence: object of knowledge, knowable, and measurable are synonymous. 'Object, realm of phenomena, place, dependent arising, the eleven that are spoken of, are pervasive with existence and being.' As the verse says, these eleven are in a relationship of pervasion and co-existence with 'existence' and 'being'. 2-566 However, in the context of realist philosophers, it is more appropriate to regard dependent arising and the conditioned as synonymous. Even in the context of Madhyamaka, there is room for discussion. Third is classification, divided into general classification and detailed classification. The general classification has four types: appearing object, object of clinging, object of action, and object of grasping. First, the appearing object is divided into three aspects: definition, pervasion and co-existence, and classification. First is the definition: that which is cognized by non-conceptual consciousness in a clear and manifest way is the definition of an appearing object. Second is pervasion and co-existence: appearing object, object of knowledge, and object are synonymous. Third is classification: divided into the appearing object of non-conceptual consciousness and the appearing object of noble ones. Therefore, if you are a non-conceptual consciousness or a noble one, then you certainly have an appearing object. If you are a conceptual consciousness or an ordinary being, then you certainly do not have an appearing object. Second, the object of clinging is divided into three aspects: definition, pervasion and co-existence, and classification. First is the definition: that which is cognized by clinging through conceptual thought is the definition of an object of clinging. Second is pervasion and co-existence: object of clinging, object, and knowable are synonymous. Third is classification: divided into the object of clinging of conceptual thought. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
