Secondly, regarding the definition, pervasion, and classification of universals (spyi mtshan), there are three aspects: Firstly, that which cannot actually perform a function is its definition. Secondly, universal and non-composite knowable (shes bya) are synonymous. Thirdly, classification: there are two types of universals, negative and affirmative. Thirdly, explaining the system of conventional truth (kun rdzob bden pa) and ultimate truth (don dam bden pa). There are two types: conventional truth and ultimate truth. Firstly, that which cannot be proven by reasoning and is fabricated by concepts is its definition. Secondly, it is synonymous with universal. Thirdly, the classification is the same as that of universals. Secondly, explaining the cognizing mind (shes byed kyi blo), which includes non-valid minds. Secondly, explaining the cognizing mind. Mind has three aspects: definition, pervasion, and classification. Firstly, awareness is its definition. Secondly, awareness, mind, knowledge, clarity, and cognition are synonymous. Thirdly, classifying from the perspective of essence. Thirdly, classification: From the aspects of essence, object, mode of apprehension, self-condition, co-emergent condition, and manner of functioning, there are six classifications of mind. As it is said, there are six classifications. The first is the division of valid (tshad ma) and non-valid minds from the perspective of essence. The first will be explained later. The second, regarding non-valid minds, there are three aspects: definition, pervasion, and classification. Firstly, that which is not a new and non-deceptive awareness is its definition. Secondly, non-valid mind and unapprehended mind are synonymous. Thirdly, classification: there are three types: unapprehended mind, distorted cognition (log shes), and doubt (the tshom). The first has two aspects: definition and classification. Firstly, the awareness that is empty of newly cognizing its own object as either this or that is its definition. Secondly, classification: there are three types: unapprehended mind that has not entered its own object, unapprehended mind that has entered but the act of seeking is not completed, and unapprehended mind that is completed but not found. The first is like the mind of someone who does not understand reasoning (rtog ge) and, when asked about the coming and going of the three aspects (tshul gsum), is confused about the three aspects. This is because they have not engaged in deep study before. The example of the second is the mind that, when asked whether sound is permanent or impermanent, thinks of starting to study now. This is because, although they have studied a little, the act is not yet completed. The third has three types: unapprehended mind because there is no object to be apprehended, unapprehended mind because it is disturbed by the apprehending mind, and unapprehended mind because it is not an object of knowledge. The example of the first is decisive cognition (bcad shes), because although it cognizes its own object, it is not a new cognition. The second is the sound mentioned in the scriptures of the Samkhya school, which exists only for a moment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is like the mind that does not understand sound as permanent, because it is contaminated by the wrong view of clinging to sound as permanent, and therefore does not understand it. Secondly, there are three types: from the perspective of the object, like the mind that does not understand the Vajrasana (the Diamond Throne, where Buddha attained enlightenment) in India; from the perspective of nature, like the mind that does not understand that this ground in front is the flesh of a demon; and from the perspective of time, like the mind that does not understand objects of the past and future. Secondly, wrong knowledge has two aspects: definition and classification. First, its definition is: the awareness that apprehends its object in a reversed manner, relying on any sign that contradicts experience and pervasiveness. Second, classification: conceptual wrong knowledge and non-conceptual wrong knowledge. The first, conceptual wrong knowledge, has two aspects: definition and classification. First, its definition is: the clinging awareness that absolutely apprehends its object in a reversed manner, relying on a sign that contradicts pervasiveness. Second, classification: conceptual wrong knowledge that is mistaken about the object, conceptual wrong knowledge that is mistaken about the time, and conceptual wrong knowledge that is mistaken about the form. The first is like the concept of clinging to sound as permanent, and the concept of mistaking mustard and sandalwood as the same. The second is like the conceptual wrong knowledge of mistaking noon for midnight. The third is like the concept of mistaking a patterned rope for a snake. Secondly, non-conceptual wrong knowledge has two aspects: definition and classification. First, its definition is: the clear-appearing awareness that apprehends its object in a reversed manner, relying on experience. Second, classification: mistaken non-conceptual sense consciousness and mistaken non-conceptual mental consciousness. The first is like the sense consciousness that sees one moon as two moons, and the sense consciousness of the illusion of hair falling. The second is like the consciousness of a dream in which forms appear clearly. Thirdly, doubt has three aspects: definition, pervasion, and classification. First, its definition is: the clinging awareness that doubts about its object in two possibilities. Second, doubt, uncertainty, the clinging awareness that doubts about two possibilities, and manifest doubt are four terms with the same meaning. Third, classification: classification based on the way of expressing sound and classification based on the way of clinging. The first has two types: manifest doubt and latent doubt. The first has the same meaning as doubt. The second has three aspects: definition, classification, and distinction between real and imputed. First, its definition is: the clinging awareness that does not rely on proof, but absolutely clings to one aspect through speculation about its object, similar to an uncertain seeming proof, relying on it to absolutely cling to its object. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
