Under what circumstances is it necessary to refute endlessly? Because the definition of a pot is necessarily infinite, meaning its extension has no end. According to our own system, although there exists a definition of a definition, such as that of a pot, we do not accept that definitions of definitions, etc., are infinite, because once the distinctions of definitions of definitions are understood, there is no need for further establishment. Second, regarding the establishment of the definition of a doubt, the followers of the Tibetan Compendium of Dharmas say: 'That which possesses the three characteristics of an existent phenomenon is the definition of a definition. The three characteristics of an existent phenomenon are: being generally a definition, not being the definition of another phenomenon, and being established on the subject.' Then, if that which possesses the three characteristics of an existent phenomenon is the subject, you must be a person who has not determined the definition, because you are the definition of a definition. This is unacceptable, because if you are a determined person, you must be a person who has determined the definition, because if you are a determined person, you must be a person who has determined that which is generally a definition, not the definition of another phenomenon, and is established on the subject. ' This is acknowledged by reason. Our own system's view is: 'The meaning-reversal that is established by cutting off contradictory things is the definition of a definition, because it establishes the meaning-reversal of the definition by cutting off what is not a definition.' Third, regarding the classification of faults to be eliminated, there are three types: the fault of non-pervasiveness, the fault of over-pervasiveness, and the fault of impossibility. The first is divided into definition and subject. The first is: if one distinguishes on a single basis, then whatever is taken as the definition of a thing, but does not pervade one aspect of the thing, that is the definition of the fault of the definition that does not pervade the thing. The second is: for example, setting abdominal distension as the definition of a thing. The second, regarding the fault of over-pervasiveness, has two divisions: definition and distinction. The first is: whatever is taken as the definition of a thing, but is more pervasive than the thing, that is the definition of the fault of over-pervasiveness than the thing. For example, setting 'that which can be an object of consciousness' as the definition of a real thing. Third, regarding the fault of impossibility, there are two divisions: definition and distinction. The first is: whatever is taken as the definition of a thing, but cannot be established on the subject of the thing as it should be, that is the definition of the fault of the definition of impossibility of the thing. Second, regarding the distinctions, there are three types: impossible due to different entities, impossible due to different self-contradictions, and impossible due to different meaning-reversals. The first has impossible due to different substances, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two types of impossibilities arise from different 'og pa' (Tibetan, a type of logical relation): The first case is, for example, representing a horse as a cow, and taking 'having mane and tail' as the definition. Because the definition of 'having mane and tail', due to the difference between the defined object (horse) and the entity, it is not established on the horse. The second case is, for example, defining 'momentariness' as 'made'. Because 'made' and 'impermanent' are different in their counter-entities, it is impossible for the concepts of 'made' and 'impermanent' to have a common basis. The second fundamental impossibility arises from the identity of self-counter-entities: For example, representing 'having mane and tail' as a cow, and taking 'having mane and tail' as the definition. Because in this case, the defined object and the definition are the same in their self-counter-entities. The third impossibility arises from the identity of meaning-counter-entities: For example, representing a cow as a cow, and taking 'having mane and tail' as the definition. Because in this case, the defined object and the represented meaning are the same in their meaning-counter-entities. Therefore, the key point is that if a dharma (thing) is the definition of a definition, then this dharma must possess three distinctions in meaning: If a dharma is a definition, then this dharma must be free from the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility. If a dharma is free from the fault of non-pervasion, then this dharma must be a 'non-existent distinction'. If a dharma is free from the fault of over-pervasion, then this dharma must be an 'other-existent distinction'. If a dharma is free from the fault of impossibility, then this dharma must be an 'impossible distinction'. To put it more clearly, 'bloated belly' is a 'non-existent distinction' for a pot, because if it is a pot, then it must be a bloated belly. Therefore, 'bloated belly' is a 'non-existent distinction' for a pot, so 'bloated belly' is free from the fault of non-pervasion. Similarly, 'bloated belly' is an 'other-existent distinction' for a pot, because if it is a bloated belly, then it must be a pot. Therefore, it is an 'other-existent distinction' for it, so it is free from the fault of over-pervasion. Furthermore, it is an 'impossible distinction' for it, because it is possible for it. Therefore, this key point makes it free from the fault of impossibility. The essence of this key point is the good saying of Mañjuśrīkumāra (འཇམ་དབྱངས་གཞོན་ནུ་) Sakya Paṇḍita (ས་པཎྜི་ཏ་), as stated in the Rigs gter: 'Non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility, are the common faults of definitions. All distinctions of sound and meaning, do not exist other than these three.' Because it explains that the three distinctions in meaning must be complete in both the definition and the defined. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
