If there is neither mutual benefit nor harm, but merely the establishment of distinct entities independent of each other, this is the supreme view of 'A Treasury of Reasoning' (Tshad ma rigs pa'i gter). As stated in 'A Treasury of Reasoning': 'Difference is related to benefit and harm, or contradiction; if neither, then merely difference.' Thirdly, regarding the explanation of mutually exclusive opposition (phan tshun spang 'gal dngos), there are two aspects: definition and classification. First, the definition: 'Whatever contradicts that phenomenon (chos de), and is a difference that precludes the identity of you (khyod) and that phenomenon, is the definition of mutually exclusive opposition between you and that phenomenon.' Secondly, the classification: There are two types: mutually exclusive direct opposition (phan tshun spangs pa'i dngos 'gal) and mutually exclusive indirect opposition (phan tshun spangs pa'i brgyud 'gal). The first is: 'Whatever your existence (khyod yod pa) is capable of excluding your non-existence (khyod ma yin pa), is the definition of mutually exclusive direct opposition between you and your non-existence.' For example, 'what is made (byas pa)' and 'what is not made (byas pa min pa)' are directly opposed. If the basis is established, then it is universally true that you and your non-existence are mutually exclusive direct opposites. The second is: 'Whatever your existence is capable of excluding the pervasive cause (khyab byed) of your non-existence, is the definition of mutually exclusive indirect opposition between you and the pervasive cause of your non-existence.' For example, 'what is made' and 'permanent (rtag pa)' are indirectly opposed. Secondly, classifying from the perspective of modes of expression, there are four types: mutually exclusive co-existence (lhan cig mi gnas 'gal), mutually exclusive opposition, opposition refuted by valid cognition (Tshad mas gnod 'gal), and opposition where difference on the same basis is impossible (tha dad gzhi mthun mi srid pa'i 'gal ba). The first two have already been explained. The third is: 'That which is determined to be red (dmar po) merely upon its establishment, and that which depends on later arising conditions that cause it to become red (dmar por 'gyur ba phyis 'byung rkyen la ltos pa), are opposites refuted by valid cognition.' The fourth is: such as a pillar and a vase (ka bum), and blue and yellow (sngo ser), etc., which are merely mutually exclusive, but not truly mutually exclusive opposites. As stated in 'A Treasury of Reasoning'. Regarding these points, doubts should be resolved as follows: If it is opposed to that phenomenon, then it must be either mutually exclusive co-existence with that phenomenon, or mutually exclusive opposition with that phenomenon. If it is opposition refuted by valid cognition with that phenomenon, then it must be mutually exclusive opposition with that phenomenon. Merely being incompatible with difference on the same basis with that phenomenon does not constitute opposition to that phenomenon. The reason for the first argument is: if it is a reason relying on opposition refuted by valid cognition, then it must be a reason relying on mutually exclusive opposition. Because: 'Opposition refuted by valid cognition is included in the opposition that excludes the pervasive cause.' If the root is accepted, then, 'existence' as the subject, you and self-arising (bdag skye) are mutually exclusive co-existence, and self-arising --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And it is either mutually exclusive or contradictory, because you contradict self-origination. The pervasion is established. The reason is as follows: Because you harm self-origination. If it is not established, the reason is as follows: As stated in the *Pramanavarttika*: 'Contradiction to a dharma is a different entity, non-different entities are combined. Like trying to prove fire without snow, or like birth having harm.' Because the meaning of the above scripture is established. If you admit, then you are an incompatible contradiction, because you are incompatible with it, and it is one of the mutually exclusive contradictions, not the latter. If you admit, then you are real. The first case is real. If the latter case is not established, then, as the subject, you and self-origination are different entities that are excluded, because you are mutually exclusive contradictions with it. It cannot be admitted, because you and self-origination are the same in non-reality.' If you say so, there is no choice but to say that the root is not pervasive, if not, then listen again: The measure of the pot is not apparent, as the subject, you contradict the existence of the pot, because you are the true sign of the absence of the pot in the clean place, and the existence of the pot is the dharma to be negated to establish it. If you admit, then, as the subject, you are an incompatible contradiction, because you contradict it, and you are not a mutually exclusive contradiction with it. The pervasion is established. The first case is real. If you admit, then you are real. If the latter case is not established, because you and the existence of the pot are different entities that are excluded. The reason is as follows: Because you and it are mutually exclusive contradictions. It cannot be admitted, because you and it are both non-real. If you say that the root is not pervasive, you cannot escape, then, the measure of the pot is not apparent, as the subject, you contradict the existence of the pot in the clean place, because you harm the pot in the clean place, because you are the true sign of negating it, because you are the true sign of establishing the absence of the pot in the clean place. If you admit as before, then it is an incompatible contradiction, because you contradict it, and you are not a mutually exclusive contradiction with it. The reason is clearly stated as before, and there is no escape anywhere. Furthermore, You are directly contradictory to permanence, because you are contradictory to permanence, if you are, then permanence is not; if permanence is, then you are not; if permanence is not, then you are; if you are not, then permanence is. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
