Contradiction (Tibetan: འགལ་བ་) has two aspects: definition and classification. The first is: To harm one's own object of harm, that is the definition of contradicting one's own object of harm. The second is classification, which includes two types: classification based on essence and classification based on the mode of sound expression. The first includes four aspects: definition, the place where contradiction exists, the time when the object of harm ceases, and the explanation of the valid cognition ( प्रमाण ) that determines contradiction. The first is: Any contradiction to your object of harm, where both you and your object of harm are established as real, that is the definition of a contradiction that cannot coexist with your object of harm. The second is: If either of the two opposites of a non-coexisting contradiction is real, then it must be real, because it is not appropriate to discuss whether opposites that are not established as real coexist or not. Therefore, for non-coexisting contradictions, the two opposites must be either mutual objects of harm or harmer. Specifically: That which, relying on itself, renders the continuity of its object of harm ineffective is the definition of a harmer that is the opposite of a non-coexisting contradiction; that which, relying on its harmer, causes its own continuity to be born ineffective is the definition of an object of harm that is the opposite of a non-coexisting contradiction. The second is classification: There are two types of non-coexisting contradictions: material and cognitive. The first is: Heat touch, which is a non-coexisting contradiction with cold touch, which is its object of harm, like that. The second is: The ascertainment that sound is impermanent, which is a non-coexisting contradiction with the imputation ( आरोप ) of holding sound to be permanent, like that. Crows and owls, etc., are merely mutually hateful, and cannot render each other ineffective, so they are not defined by the definition of non-coexisting contradictions. The third is the time when the object of harm ceases: There are two types: the time when the material object of harm ceases and the time when the cognitive object of harm ceases. The first is: Heat touch, which has a time when the cold touch, which is its object of harm, ceases, because it meets in the first moment, weakens the object of harm in the second moment, and causes the continuity of the object of harm to cease in the third moment. Furthermore, like light and darkness, which are distinguished by opposition, since the object of harm and the harmer do not meet, the harmer, light, arises and causes the continuity of the object of harm, darkness, to cease. The second is the time when the cognitive object of harm ceases: The ascertainment that sound is impermanent... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, by not diminishing its own function, and by eliminating the proliferation of clinging to sound as permanent, the clinging to sound as permanent is ceased. And through the wisdom realizing selflessness that has become Vajropama-samadhi (金刚喻定,the diamond-like samadhi), by harming the seed of clinging to the self of a person, the clinging to the self of a person is ceased. If one observes through detailed analysis, then the wisdom realizing selflessness, which is encompassed by Vajropama-samadhi, and the clinging to the self of a person are mutually contradictory, and the wisdom realizing selflessness, which is encompassed by the path of no more learning, and the seed of clinging to the self of a person are also mutually contradictory, this must be acknowledged. Fourth, explaining the pramana (量,valid cognition) that determines contradiction. It is divided into: refuting contradiction in reality, establishing contradiction in the mind, and directly explaining the pramana that determines contradiction. First, in reality, heat and cold are not contradictory, because when the harmer, the touch of heat, is present, the harmed, the touch of cold, does not arise, therefore the simultaneous heat and cold have no contradictory relationship. Second, however, in the mind, heat and cold are contradictory, because in the conceptualization that grasps heat and cold as harmer and harmed, heat and cold are established as contradictory. Third, there is a pramana that determines that heat and cold are contradictory, first not focusing on both heat and cold, then focusing on the harmer, the touch of heat, then not focusing on the harmed, the touch of cold, the conceptual thought led by the pramana determines through reasoning. Second, explaining mutually exclusive contradiction. It is divided into: the classification of one and different, the way of establishing contradictory relationships of different things, and directly explaining mutually exclusive contradiction. First, that which is understood by the same name as that thing, is the definition of one with that thing. One is divided into two: identity of attribute and identity of substance. The definition of the first is sufficient with the previous one. The definition of the second is: that which is born from the same cause as that thing, is the definition of identity of substance with that thing. Also, that which is understood by a different name from that thing, is the definition of difference from that thing. It is divided into two: difference of attribute and difference of substance. The first is like 'produced' and 'impermanent'. The second is like 'pillar' and 'pot'. Second, the way of establishing contradictory relationships of different things is: on the basis of different substances, if they are mutually harmer or harmed, then they are established as contradictory; on the basis of different substances, if they are mutually beneficial or detrimental, then they are related; on the basis of different substances, if they are mutually harmer or harmed, or mutually beneficial or detrimental, then they are neither contradictory nor related. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
