Cause and Co-existent Condition are combined into two, and these two have two aspects: definition and basis. First, to benefit the essence of its own result with its own power is the definition of the substantial cause. To benefit the distinction of its own result with its own power is the definition of the co-existent condition. The bases are in order: For example, the seed of barley is the substantial cause of its own result, the barley sprout; water and fertilizer, etc., are its co-existent conditions. Second, for the result, there are two aspects: definition and classification. First, to be benefited is its definition. There are two types of classification: from the perspective of essence and from the perspective of sound expression. The first type has two kinds: actual result and indirect result. The second type has five kinds: Adhipati-phala (dominating result), Purushakara-phala (man-made result), Samanantara-phala (homogeneous result), Viprayukta-phala (result of separation), and Vipaka-phala (result of maturation). First, eye consciousness is the Adhipati-phala of the eye faculty and visible form. Second, the Kshanti of Suffering Dharma in the Path of Seeing is the Purushakara-phala of the Supreme Dharma in the Path of Application. Third, longevity is the Samanantara-phala of the virtuous act of abandoning killing. Fourth, the body of the heavenly realm is the Vipaka-phala of one's own virtuous karma. Fifth, Nirodha-satya (cessation) is the Viprayukta-phala of the Path of No-Interruption. The Vaibhashikas (a school of Buddhism) acknowledge the Viprayukta-phala as the definition of a result, but the Sautrantikas (another school of Buddhism) do not acknowledge it here. The Vaibhashikas acknowledge cause and effect that have become unconditioned, but the Sautrantikas do not acknowledge this, considering cause and effect and phenomena to be one and the same. Second, explaining the method of ascertainment, there are two types: the method of ascertaining cause and effect of an uncertain prior limit, and the method of ascertaining cause and effect of an uncertain posterior limit. First, it is ascertained through the three aspects of object, antecedent, and sequence. First, one sees the result, smoke, arise. Then, one does not see the cause, fire. Then, it is ascertained through the three ascertainments of not seeing the result, smoke. Second, it is ascertained through the three aspects of non-perception as an antecedent. First, in a clean place, one does not perceive both fire and smoke. Then, one perceives fire. Then, it is ascertained through the three ascertainments of perceiving smoke. The fundamental second, the basis of relation, is that a relation is not established for a self-character alone or a sound meaning alone. For the general meaning of fire and smoke, in distinguishing the object that mistakenly apprehends them as fire and smoke, there is a relation of fire and smoke. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is merely placing it. The fundamental third point, the actual determining wisdom, is: it is not determined solely by direct perception and inference, or solely by analysis, but by the conceptual analysis or decisive knowledge that arises from being guided by valid cognition, primarily determining the relationship. Regarding these, doubts must be dispelled as follows: In ultimate truth, the relationship is established, because in ultimate truth, the relationship between fire and smoke is established; because in ultimate truth, smoke has a 'born from that' relationship with fire; because in ultimate truth, smoke is the result of fire; because in ultimate truth, smoke is the result. Similarly, in ultimate truth, the relationship is established, because in ultimate truth, the relationship of one entity is established; because in ultimate truth, 'produced' and 'impermanent' have a relationship of one entity; because in ultimate truth, 'produced' and 'impermanent' are one in essence; because in ultimate truth, 'produced' and 'impermanent' are one in nature. What is it that 'produced' and 'impermanent' both have in ultimate truth? Because in ultimate truth, 'produced' and 'impermanent' are not of different natures. If the latter is not established, then in ultimate truth, 'produced' and 'impermanent' would become distinct entities. Similarly, in ultimate truth, the relationship is established, because in ultimate truth, the cause-and-effect relationship is established. If it is said that in ultimate truth, cause and effect are established, then in ultimate truth, smoke is the result of fire, and in ultimate truth, 'produced' and 'impermanent' are merely the same in nature, but it is not accepted that in ultimate truth, smoke has a relationship with fire, or that in ultimate truth, 'produced' has a relationship with 'impermanent', because the relationship is imputed by the mind. If it is said, then in ultimate truth, smoke, as a phenomenon, you must be related to fire, because you are the result of fire. Saying so, such a phenomenon is flawed and meaningless. Again, if your cause does not exist, then you must not exist, because you are a thing. There is pervasion in this consequence, because you are related to your cause, because you are a thing. There is pervasion in this consequence, because you are the result of your cause, because you are a thing. If it is fundamentally accepted, the phenomenon appearing to a valid cognition that realizes the existence of that phenomenon, or the phenomenon appearing to an inference that realizes the non-existence of that phenomenon, as a phenomenon, it must be so, because it is so. If it is not established, then the phenomenon appearing to a valid cognition that has become either of those, you must be a thing, because you are consciousness, because you are a valid cognition, because you are direct perception. If it is not established, then any valid cognition, as a phenomenon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
