Indeed, a single entity relationship can be established between a name and its referent. However, there is no necessity to establish a single entity relationship between names, symbols, and the general and specific in terms of meaning, because there are many cases where names, symbols, and the general and specific are not established in meaning. Second, in establishing causality, there are three aspects: establishing the fundamental reason, eliminating uncertainty, and explaining its necessity. First, to prove that sound is impermanent, it is necessary to establish a correct argument: 'Whatever is created is impermanent, like a pot. Sound is also created.' Second, establishing a correct reason that the establishment of subsequent pervasion does not depend on other factors; establishing reverse pervasion; establishing a reason that is harmful to what is being proven. First, if a thing arises after itself and its destruction does not depend on other factors, then it will necessarily be destroyed as soon as it is established, this is pervasive. For example, lightning. By establishing a correct argument: 'A sprout arises after itself and its destruction does not depend on other factors,' it can be determined that 'Whatever is created is impermanent' is pervasive. Second, if things have no function, then they are uncreated, this is pervasive. For example, space. By establishing a correct argument: 'Ishvara's sound has no function,' it can be determined that 'Whatever is permanent is uncreated' is pervasive. Third, it is necessary to establish such a subsequent pervasive argument, because even though pots and other things are created, they will be destroyed when they encounter the causes of destruction, and will not be destroyed if they do not encounter them, so it is necessary to eliminate the false notion that 'Whatever is created is impermanent.' Similarly, it is necessary to establish such a reverse pervasive argument, because some atoms, even though they are created, will not be destroyed even when they encounter the causes of destruction, so it is necessary to eliminate the false notion that 'Whatever is permanent is not created.' As it is said in the Treasury of Reasoning: 'Therefore, to counteract two kinds of false notions, two kinds of reasons are taught.' Second, explaining how to determine causality is divided into two parts: explaining the causality that needs to be determined, and explaining how to determine it. The first part is divided into explaining the cause and explaining the result. The first part is further divided into definition and classification. First, the definition: that which benefits the production of a result is a cause. Second, the classification is divided into classification from the perspective of sound expression and classification from the perspective of essence. First, from the perspective of sound expression, it is divided into: co-emergent cause and homogenous cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As it is sung: 'Co-emergent and concurrent, and the ripening cause, cause is of six kinds.' Thus, there are six kinds of operative causes. Among operative causes, there are powerless operative causes and powerful operative causes. The former is like space being the powerless operative cause of a vase, which is a nominal cause. The second is the co-emergent cause, such as the four elements that become the cause of arising, being mutually co-emergent causes. Generally, if it is a co-emergent cause, then it is pervasively a nature cause. If it is a co-emergent cause of that dharma, then it is pervasively not a cause of that dharma, because if it is a co-emergent cause of that dharma, then it must be simultaneous with that dharma. If it is a cause of that dharma, then it must arise before that dharma. The third is the equal share cause, such as the five categories to be abandoned and the former category being the cause of the latter, and like the former of the undefiled paths being the cause of the latter. If it is a conditioned phenomenon other than the first moment of the undefiled path, then it is pervaded by having your equal share cause. The fourth is the corresponding cause, such as the mental factors arising in the retinue of eye consciousness, being the corresponding cause of eye consciousness. Generally, if it is a corresponding cause, then it is pervasively a cause. If it is a corresponding cause of that dharma, then it need not be a cause of that dharma, because if it is, then it must be simultaneous with that dharma. The fifth is the pervasive cause, such as ignorance to be abandoned by seeing suffering, becoming the cause of other afflictions of its own result. If it is a pervasive cause, then it is pervasively an affliction. This pervasive cause is within the content of the equal share cause. The sixth is the ripening cause, such as virtuous contaminated and non-virtuous, being the cause of the ripening result of happy and unhappy migrations. This ripening cause is pervasively contaminated. Therefore, the Vaibhashikas assert that all six causes are nature causes. However, in this context of the Sutrantikas, only the terms of the six causes are acknowledged, but one should know the distinction between entity and imputation as before. Acknowledging the simultaneity of cause and effect is the tenet of the Vaibhashikas, and not acknowledging it is the tenet of the Sutrantikas. Secondly, distinguishing from the perspective of essence, there are four: cause, condition, objective condition, dominating condition, and immediately preceding condition. These four, when condensed, are the proximate cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
