Distinguishing between the sound that expresses (能诠之声) and the sound that is expressed (所诠之声), the four types of sounds that express have the same meaning. Distinguishing them further: the sound of the subject (法体之声), the sound of contradiction (相违之声), the sound of substance (实体之声), and the sound of the object (所诠之声) have the same meaning. Secondly, the example is: the sound 'cow' (牛) is the sound of the subject. The sound 'is a cow' (是牛) is an example of the sound of the dharma. Also, the sound 'sound is impermanent' (声音无常) is the sound of the subject. The sound 'the impermanence of sound' (声音的无常) is an example of the sound of the dharma. In short, if considering the characteristics of having dewlap and tail, the sound called 'cow' is considered the sound of the subject. Because the basis of difference, the one with difference, and the subject are all synonyms, it is only the sound that expresses the basis of difference - the cow. Moreover, the sound 'cow' is also considered a sound that does not exclude other differences, because it cannot literally exclude other differences that are not cows, such as horses, because it is only a non-inclusive exclusion. The sound 'is a cow' is the sound of the dharma and is also considered a sound that excludes other differences, because it literally excludes other differences that are not cows, such as horses, it is an inclusive exclusion. Also, the sound 'sound is impermanent' is the sound of the subject, because it is only the sound that expresses the common basis of sound and impermanence. It also does not exclude other differences, because it cannot exclude the common basis of sound and being made, etc. The sound 'the impermanence of sound' is the sound of the dharma, because it is the sound that expresses the difference attribute - impermanence - on the basis of difference - sound. It also excludes other differences, because on the basis of difference - sound - there are many different aspects of difference attributes, but only the difference attribute - impermanence - is expressed, therefore, it is the speech that excludes being made, things, and knowable things, etc. Fourthly, distinguishing from the perspective of function, there are three types: the language of non-inclusive exclusion, the language of inclusive exclusion, and the language of impossible exclusion. These three include four parts: definition, classification, example, and incidental meaning exclusion. First, the listener of non-inclusive exclusion, the listener of inclusive exclusion, and the listener of impossible exclusion are definitions in order. Secondly, the classification includes: three types of language of exclusion that only have the basis of difference, the basis of difference... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My three expressions of distinguishing characteristics are as follows. First, the single word 'vase' possesses all three distinctions: by saying 'vase,' it possesses the distinction of non-possession (Tibetan: མི་ལྡན་རྣམ་གཅོད།), excluding what is not a vase; by excluding what is not a vase, it possesses the distinction of possessing others (Tibetan: གཞན་ལྡན་རྣམ་གཅོད།); by excluding the impossibility of a vase, it possesses the distinction of non-existence (Tibetan: མི་སྲིད་རྣམ་གཅོད།). This is because, as it is said, 'All words have a definite meaning.' The second situation is divided into two types: one is the three distinctions with the qualifier directly attached, and the other is the three distinctions without the qualifier directly attached. The first three distinctions are, in order: the auditory object with the characteristic and qualifier attached together is the definition of the expression of the distinction of non-possession with the qualifier directly attached. For example, a word like 'Only sound is produced.' Such a word, in relation to the base sound, is a distinction of non-possession, because the characteristic 'produced' merely indicates that the characteristic exists on the base sound, and cannot exclude the characteristic from existing on other bases. The auditory object with the base and qualifier directly attached is the definition of the expression of the distinction of possessing others with the qualifier directly attached. For example, a word like 'Only sound is an auditory object.' This word, in relation to the base sound, is a distinction of possessing others, because the characteristic 'auditory object' can exclude its existence on things other than sound. The auditory object with the action of existence and qualifier directly attached is the definition of the expression of the distinction of non-existence with the qualifier directly attached. For example, a word like 'For blue, only the lotus exists.' Such a word, in relation to the base blue, is a distinction of non-existence, because for the base blue, the action of the characteristic 'born from water' is not universal, but it indicates that something born from water exists. The second type, the three distinctions without the qualifier attached, are in order: when asked 'Is the black object fast or not fast?', the answer 'The black object is fast' is an expression of the distinction of non-possession, because it merely indicates that the black object is fast. When asked 'Which is fast, the black object or the entity?', the answer 'The entity is fast' is an expression of the distinction of possessing others, because this word excludes the possibility that the black object other than the entity is fast. The word 'A cow may have a calf' is an expression of the distinction of non-existence, because it merely indicates that a cow may give birth to a calf. The distinction of meaning will be explained later. Regarding these contents, it is necessary to eliminate doubts in this way: the base... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
