To refute this, if one thinks that the 'Treasury of Logic' states that the self-characterized expressive sound is not the actual object expressed, that is not correct. Because, it refers to the fact that among sound and self-character, only the self-character alone is not the actual object expressed by the expressive sound. As it is said: 'If sound expresses self-nature, the eye faculty etc. will become unnecessary.' Second, at the time of application, it is merely acknowledged that the sound 'vase' is the expresser of the vase, and the vase is its object expressed. The actual and the conceptual are not explained separately, as the 'Treasury of Logic' says: 'Although there is a distinction in explanation, there is no difference in application.' Second, the classification of expressers is explained in detail, divided into four types: classification from the aspect of essence, classification from the aspect of object expressed, classification from the aspect of mode of expression, and classification from the aspect of function. The first is divided into: letters, words, and sentences. The first (letters) is divided into two: definition and classification. The first (definition) is: the sound that does not show the essence or difference of meaning, and is the basis of words and sentences, this is the definition of letters among the three classifications of letters, words, and sentences. The second (classification) is divided into four: the system of the Sutra School, the system of the Grammarians, the system of the Poets, and the system of Tibetan Grammar. The first has sixteen vowel letters and forty consonant letters. The second has fourteen vowel letters and thirty-seven consonant letters. The third has twenty-two vowel letters and thirty-seven consonant letters. The fourth, according to the grammar of Thonmi Sambhota, the Tibetan grammarian, has four vowel letters and thirty consonant letters. The first are: ཨི་ (i), ཨོ་ (o), ཨེ་ (e), ཨུ་ (u). The second are: ཀ་ (ka) to ཨ་ (a), these thirty. The second (word) is divided into two: definition and classification. The first (definition) is: the audible sound composed of multiple letters, which only shows the essence of meaning, this is the definition of word among the three classifications of letters, words, and sentences. The second (classification) is divided into substantive names and imputed names. The first (substantive names) is divided into two: definition and classification. The first (definition) is: the audible sound that is initially designated for that thing, and is able to understand that thing without confusion, this is the definition of the substantive name of that thing. The second (classification) is divided into: names with reasons for explanation, names with reasons for application, and names with reasons for both explanation and application, a total of three. The first is like the name 'Omniscient'. The second is like the name 'tree'. The third, for example, the word 'ocean-born', the word 'ocean-born' can be explained --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are four types of boundaries: one that cannot be entered, one that can be entered, one that cannot be spoken of, one that can be both spoken of and entered, and one that is neither. The first is like a frog born in the sea. The term 'sea-born' can be applied to it because it is born in the sea, but it cannot truly be considered 'sea-born' because it is not a genuine sea-born entity. The second is like a lotus born on dry land. The term 'sea-born' can be applied to it because it is considered a sea-born entity, but it cannot be spoken of as such because it is not born in the sea. The third is like a lotus born in the sea. The term 'sea-born' can be both spoken of and applied to it because it is born in the sea and is a genuine sea-born entity or lotus. The fourth is like a creature born on dry land, as it is neither born in the sea nor is it a lotus. Secondly, regarding imputed names, there are two aspects: definition and classification. The first, the definition, is that it is a conventional term applied to something after the fact, and it can lead to a confused understanding of that thing. This audible sound is the definition of that thing. Secondly, there are two types of classification: classification based on essence and classification based on reason. The first type is further divided into names that are conventionally established after the fact and names that have meaning after the fact. The first is like arbitrarily calling a dog a 'conch shell.' The second is like calling a white dog a 'conch shell.' Therefore, if a name is a conventionally established name, then it must be the actual name of that thing. As stated in the *Nyāyabindu*: 'Names are of two types: initial and subsequent. The initial is a conventional name, while the subsequent can be either conventional or meaningful.' Therefore, the initial name must be a conventional name, while the subsequent name can be either conventional or meaningful. The second type includes names based on similarity and names based on relation. The first is like the medicinal name 'crow's foot.' The second type includes names based on cause-and-effect relation and names based on collective relation. The first includes applying the name of the cause to the effect, such as calling sunlight 'sun,' and applying the name of the effect to the cause, such as calling alcohol 'intoxicant' and calling a correct argument 'inference for others.' The second also includes applying the name of the collection to a part, such as applying the name 'possessor of knowledge' to 'dharma' and 'thesis'; and applying the name of a part to the collection. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
