Not everything arises simultaneously. This is because the two primary mental states, attachment and aversion, do not arise simultaneously in one mind. Moreover, even with the first group of ten near afflictions, such as anger, when any one of them arises in the retinue of a primary mind, the others do not arise simultaneously. However, if it is a virtuous primary mind, then it is necessarily the case that your retinue includes the eleven virtues such as faith. If it is a non-virtuous primary mind, then it is necessarily the case that your retinue includes the two mental factors of shamelessness and lack of embarrassment. If it is an afflicted primary mind, then it is necessarily the case that your retinue includes ignorance. The key point is that whether it is a virtuous consciousness, a non-virtuous consciousness, or an obscured indeterminate consciousness, it is necessarily an attention or intentional consciousness. For an unobscured indeterminate consciousness, there are both the non-attentive consciousness that follows conditions and the attentive or intentional consciousness, which must be understood as the key point. Part Two: Examining the Five Similarities and Which Realm and Ground Mind and Mental Factors Exist. The second part is examining the five similarities. For example, the prior-apprehending eye consciousness and the feeling mental factor that arises in its retinue are the same in the five similarities. They are the same in that they both focus on the color blue as their object. They are the same in possessing the appearance of blue. They are the same in relying on the eye faculty as their basis. They are the same in acting simultaneously in terms of arising, abiding, and ceasing. They are the same in substance. Therefore, if you are a consciousness or primary mind, then you and the mental factors that arise in your retinue are the same in object, appearance, basis, time, and substance, that is, the same in the five similarities. The third part is examining which realm and ground mind and mental factors exist. All of the mind included in the desire realm, namely the eight aggregates of consciousness, and the fifty-one mental factors, exist. All of the mind included in the first dhyana, namely the eight aggregates of consciousness, exist. However, among the six root afflictions, hatred; among the first group of ten near afflictions, seven; and the first five of the second group of ten, do not exist in what is included in the first dhyana. This is because there is no non-virtue included in the first dhyana, and those thirteen mental factors are necessarily non-virtuous. Furthermore, sleep and regret, which are divided by the four transformations, also do not exist in the first dhyana. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -607

If one possesses the actual distinction of the first Dhyana (meditative absorption), there is no conceptualization (rtog pa) that is divided by the four other transformations (gzhan 'gyur bzhi). In the second Dhyana and above, there are no thirteen unwholesome mental factors (sems byung mi dge ba bcu gsum) mentioned earlier, along with the seventeen including the four other transformations. The remaining ones exist as appropriate, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge (mdzod): 'In that, there are no regret and sleep, all unwholesome, in the first Dhyana. The Dhyana without conceptualization is distinct, above that, there is also no analysis.' Because it is said so. Among those mental factors, the latter three views are pervaded by what is abandoned by seeing (mthong spang), and the first set of ten near afflictions (nye nyon) has both what is abandoned by seeing and what is abandoned by meditation (sgom spang). Among the fifty-one mental factors, there are thirteen mental factors that are definitely unwholesome, these are temporarily written according to the excerpts of mind and mental factors in the 'Three Hundred Thousand' (dpal 'bum phrag gsum pa'i) sutra. The research on how to determine this will be explained elsewhere. Next, regarding how the mind cognizes objects, the ways of cognizing generalities and particulars will be explained. Third, explaining how the mind cognizes objects, there are four aspects: the way of cognizing generalities and particulars, the way of cognizing appearance and elimination, the way of cognizing what is expressed and what expresses, and the way of cognizing contradiction and relation. The first has two aspects: explaining the general and explaining the particular. Each has a definition and a division. First, the definition is that the pot is different from non-things and also different from the pillar among things, the collection of these two differences is the definition of the pot being a particular of things. The thing is different from non-things, this single difference is the definition of the thing being a generality. Second, explaining the division, there are two types: the division of generalities and the division of particulars. The first is divided into two types: division from the perspective of the way of expressing sounds and division from the perspective of particulars. The first is divided into three types: genus generality, collection generality, and meaning generality. The first and the generality have the same meaning, with the pot as an example. The second and the coarse have the same meaning, with form, sound, etc., as examples. The third is sound generality, sound meaning generality, and meaning have the same meaning, taking the appearance of the pot in the conceptualization that holds the pot as an example. The second is divided from the perspective of particulars, there are two types: direct generality and higher generality. The first is that the thing is the generality of the pillar and the pot. The second is that the thing and the pot are the generality of the earlier and later moments. Second, the division of particulars, there are two types: direct particular and higher particular. The first is that Shapa tree and Chandana are particulars of wood. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2-609
