In two cases: First, in the accompanying mind of the obscured and unspecified sense consciousness (dbang po'i rnam par shes pa), nineteen mental factors arise, namely the five omnipresent, the five object-specific, and the two root afflictions—desire ( 'dod chags) and ignorance (gti mug). Also, among the ten minor afflictions, the latter five of the last ten, plus the two of investigation (rtog) and analysis (dpyod), a total of nineteen mental factors arise. Therefore, in its accompanying mind, the eleven virtues do not arise, because it is unspecified. In its accompanying mind, the root affliction of hatred (zhe sdang), and the first five and sixth of the last ten of the ten minor afflictions do not arise, because it is unspecified, and these six are all pervasively unwholesome. In its accompanying mind, the latter three root afflictions, the first set of ten minor afflictions, and the two of sleep (gnyid) and regret ('gyod), a total of fifteen mental factors do not arise, because it is sense consciousness, and these fifteen mental factors are all pervasively mind consciousness. Second, in the accompanying mind of the sense consciousness that has transformed into the non-obscured and unspecified, twelve mental factors arise, namely the five omnipresent, the five object-specific, plus the two of investigation and analysis, a total of twelve mental factors arise. Therefore, in its accompanying mind, the eleven virtues do not arise, because it is unspecified. In its accompanying mind, the six root afflictions and the twenty minor afflictions, a total of twenty-six mental factors do not arise, because it (sense consciousness) is non-obscured and unspecified, and these twenty-six mental factors are obscuring. In its accompanying mind, the two of sleep and regret do not arise, because it is sense consciousness, and the two of sleep and regret are all pervasively mind consciousness. Second, the sixth consciousness is divided into two types: the consciousness of the mind that relies on conditions (rkyen nyer gnas kyi yid kyi rnam par shes pa) and the sixth consciousness of the mind that precedes consciousness (yid sngon song gi drug pa yid kyi rnam par shes pa). In the accompanying mind of the first type, only the five omnipresent arise, and other mental factors do not arise, because the conditions for its arising are not complete. Second, for it (the sixth consciousness), there are three cases: virtuous, unwholesome, and unspecified. First, in the accompanying mind of the sixth consciousness that has transformed into virtuous, twenty-five mental factors arise, namely the five omnipresent, the five object-specific, the eleven virtues, and the four variable factors, a total of twenty-five mental factors arise. In its accompanying mind, the six root afflictions and the twenty minor afflictions, a total of twenty-six mental factors do not arise, because it is virtuous, and these twenty-six mental factors are afflictions. Second, in the accompanying mind of the sixth consciousness that has transformed into unwholesome, forty mental factors arise, namely the five omnipresent, the five object-specific, the six root afflictions, the twenty minor afflictions, and the four variable factors, all forty of these mental factors arise. The eleven virtues do not arise, because it (the sixth consciousness) is unwholesome. Third, for the unspecified sixth consciousness, there is the obscured unspecified... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English

There are two types: obscured and unspecified (བསྒྲིབས་ལུང་མ་བསྟན།) and unobscured and unspecified (མ་བསྒྲིབས་ལུང་མ་བསྟན།). First, in the retinue of the sixth consciousness that has become obscured and unspecified, thirty-nine mental factors arise: the five omnipresent (ཀུན་འགྲོ་ལྔ།), the five object-specific (ཡུལ་ངེས་ལྔ།), the five root afflictions (རྩ་ཉོན་ལྔ།) excluding hatred, the twenty secondary afflictions (ཉེ་ཉོན་ཉི་ཤུ་), and the four variable (གཞན་འགྱུར་བཞི་), totaling thirty-nine. Because in its retinue, the eleven virtues (དགེ་བ་བཅུ་གཅིག་) and hatred (ཞེ་སྡང་) do not arise. Because it is unspecified, the eleven virtues and hatred are separately determined as virtuous and non-virtuous. Second, in the retinue of the sixth consciousness that has become unobscured and unspecified, fourteen mental factors arise: the five omnipresent, the five object-specific, and the four variable, totaling fourteen. Because in its retinue, the eleven virtues, the six root afflictions, and the twenty secondary afflictions, totaling thirty-seven, do not arise. Because it (the sixth consciousness) is unobscured and unspecified, the eleven virtues are virtuous actions, and the six root afflictions and twenty secondary afflictions are afflictive obscurations. Here, it is necessary to consider this doubt: 'In your retinue, the eleven virtues such as faith, the five omnipresent, the five object-specific, and the two of investigation and analysis, totaling twenty-three, exist,' it should be so, because you are the main mind that has become virtuous. For this inference, the pervasion (khyab) exists, because in the retinue of the main mind that has become virtuous, these twenty-three mental factors arise. If you say so, it is not pervasive. If you admit, then the main mind that has become virtuous, included in the second dhyana ground, should be so, because of that reason. The sign (rtags) is admitted. If you admit, then it, should be so, in your retinue, the two of investigation and analysis exist, because of that reason. It cannot be admitted, because it (the main mind) is the subject (chos can). Furthermore, in your retinue, besides the eleven virtues such as faith, there are forty mental factors, it should be so, because you are the non-virtuous sixth consciousness. For this inference, the pervasion exists, because in the retinue of the non-virtuous sixth consciousness, forty mental factors arise. If you admit, then the sixth consciousness corresponding to the non-virtuous desire, should be so, because of that reason. The sign is admitted. If you admit, then in your retinue, hatred exists, it should be so, because of that reason. It cannot be admitted, because it (the sixth consciousness) is the subject. Therefore, the statement 'in the retinue of the non-virtuous sixth consciousness, forty mental factors arise' refers to the situation where they arise separately. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
