If the permanent (thing) cannot be established, that is, it cannot be proven, then how can it change? It will not change at all. Because the permanent (thing) is a property unrelated to the impermanence of sound. If it is explained in this way, then an unrelated property does not exist. If it does not exist, then how can it change? This is the second line of reasoning. Furthermore, the made (thing) as the subject, when will you (referring to the permanent thing) harm the permanence of sound? How can you be a valid reason for proving the impermanence of sound? You cannot. Because your reason has completely proven the impermanence of sound. If your reason has completely proven the impermanence of sound, then your reason is correct. If it is explained in this way, then if it is established, then it is established. How can your reason be invalid? This is the third line of reasoning. Furthermore, the knowable (thing) as the subject, in order to prove what is to be proven, it is not necessary to accept the valid means of cognition ( प्रमाण ,pramāṇa,instrument of knowledge) as the standard. Because the characteristics of the subject, and the meaning of the scriptures, are not necessarily accepted by everyone. For example, others can infer that the speaker has a mind from the language of the speaker, or infer that there is fire from phenomena such as smoke. If someone thinks that this will harm the views of some authors of treatises, then self-nature and causes can be used as means of proof. Although the essence of phenomena and results is different from the reason, they can each accurately prove what is to be proven without error. If it is explained in this way, then the subject and properties are not all, and there are no examples. People can infer that there is mind and fire from language and smoke. Because they are not mistaken, self-nature and causes can be used as means of proof. This will harm the views of some people, but there is no difference in essence. The above is about the proof of reason. Taking the above example, how can smoke, as a reason for proving the existence of fire, prove that there is fire on the mountain? It can certainly prove it. Because smoke is a necessary condition for the fire that the proponent wants to prove, and if there is no fire on the mountain, there will be no smoke. This is also admitted by the proponent. If it is explained in this way, then it is a necessary condition for what is to be proven, and if that thing does not exist, there will be no smoke. This is an example of other reasons. Then how can it not prove it? This is the fourth line of reasoning. The third part, refuting the answers that refute the errors one by one, is divided into two parts: refuting the opponent's errors, and excluding the appearance of similarities with others. The first part is that the Sāṃkhya school says, the refuter... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the proponent states in that way, even if 'being produced' is a flawless reason for proving 'sound is impermanent,' the proponent, specifically the Vaisheshika, is still flawed because he deviates from his own commitment. If someone thinks like that, then, as the Vaisheshika proponent, you (as the subject) 'sound,' is impermanent, because it is 'produced'—when you state this, what fault have you committed? Or have you not committed a fault? Because your saying this does not harm the tenet of 'sound is permanent' in the scriptures, whether you correctly state 'being produced' as the correct reason for proving 'sound is impermanent' or not, because 'being produced' is merely contradictory to 'sound is permanent,' that is, causing harm. As the scripture says: 'Whether or not a reason is stated, if it is contradictory, what has the proponent done here? The fault he stated does not harm the scriptures.' Furthermore, someone says that when the Vaisheshika proponent states in that way, he is flawed because when he states in that way, he has spoken something that harms the meaning of the scriptures that he had previously committed to. Then, as the Vaisheshika proponent, how is it that you have become a flawed proponent because you have spoken something that harms the meaning of the 'sound is permanent' scriptures? Or is it not so? Because you have not become unreasonable in that respect, even if you do not say it in that way, would 'being produced' not harm 'sound is permanent'? Of course, it would. As the scripture says: 'Is it flawed because it speaks of harm? Even if it does not speak, what about it? Would it not cause harm, become unreasonable? No, how could it be flawed?' The second case is that someone says that the proponent who states 'sound (as the subject), is impermanent, because it is audible' is not a flawed proponent, because the proponent who states 'sound (as the subject), is impermanent, because it is produced' after acknowledging the 'sound is permanent' scriptures is not a flawed proponent. If someone thinks like that, then: These two cases are not the same, because 'being produced' in proving 'sound is impermanent' is the correct sign that proves what one wants to prove in the present case, while for other similar reasons like 'audible' in proving 'sound is impermanent,' they themselves do not have the ability to prove what one wants to prove. Therefore, the proponent becomes flawed because he states a sign that does not function, that is, cannot prove what is to be proven. As the scripture says: For other similar reasons --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
