If the related object (as a necessary condition for establishment) is harmed, then the reason you propose as a necessary condition for establishment should be refuted. Even if other unrelated phenomena are harmed, it will not lead to a contradiction of the reason, because if it were so, it would lead to an infinite number of contradictory reasons.’ To this, there is also an explanation: ‘If the dharma to be proven and the necessary condition for establishment are not harmed, then it should be refuted, not others, because it would lead to infinity.’ Therefore, for these treatises, ancient and modern scholars do not seem to have given a thorough explanation. Tsongkhapa said: ‘If it is completely pure through the analysis of two objects, then it is pure through three analyses, and at that time, one can accept the measuring standard of the treatise.’ At that time, such a treatise would harm the superficial meaning of its own commitment, which is not the behavior of a wise person, because the root of the treatise is ‘if two objects are completely pure,’ not ‘if three objects are completely pure.’ In addition, the Gelug master said: ‘If it is completely pure through the analysis of the manifest and factual two objects perceived by direct perception and inference, then the third object is the subject.’ And, ‘If the first two places of measurement are proven by two valid cognitions, then the third place is the subject.’ The scholar Shakya Chokden said: ‘If the analysis described in the treatise is completely pure for the two objects of manifest and hidden, then it is like that.’ Etc., these added contents do not seem good, because when analyzing the third place of measurement, it is not necessary to pre-conduct the two valid cognitions that analyze the first two places of measurement. If the agama that proves the extremely hidden is completely pure, then it does not need to have all three places of measurement that it wants to prove. So, how do you explain ‘if two objects are completely pure,’ etc.? Although it can be understood through the above explanation, to explain it more clearly, for the extremely hidden object to be proven, when proving the agama, is it necessary to pre-conduct the analysis of two measuring standards? Or, does the object to be proven by the agama need to have the first two places of measurement as well? Neither is the case, Rather, it means that when proving the extremely hidden object to be proven, it is necessary to pre-conduct the analysis of the first two valid cognitions, because the extremely hidden object to be proven needs to be purified by the first two analyses. This is also giving (Sanskrit: dāna, giving)…… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as enjoyment arises from use, the first analysis is pure. If one analyzes whether it is established by direct perception (pratyakṣa) and direct cognition (abhijñā), it can neither establish nor harm. The second analysis is also pure. If one analyzes whether it is established by the reasoning of the nature of things (vastusvabhāva-hetu), it can neither harm nor establish. When examined by the first two analyses, if it is established by either of them, then there is no need to rely on scripture (āgama) to establish it, because it has already been established. If it is harmed by either of them, then scripture cannot establish it, because the first two analyses have already made it impure. Therefore, the proposition to be established above must rely on the reliable words (pramāṇa-vacana) of the Victorious One to be established, because it belongs to the third type of knowable object, which the first two analyses can neither harm nor establish. Therefore, after saying 'If these two objects are completely pure,' the reason for not saying 'If three objects are completely pure' lies in this. Because even if the first two analyses cannot harm or establish the third type of knowable object, there needs to be a third analysis that can establish it. However, old Tibetans often say 'Scripture pure through three analyses,' which is as well-known as the wind. It seems that they merely consider the state of not being harmed by the three valid cognitions (pramāṇa) as 'pure through three analyses,' but in reality, they have not deeply understood its meaning, because the phrase 'If these two objects are completely pure' already implies this. Then, in the *Pramāṇavārttika* (Commentary on Valid Cognition), it says: 'For visible and invisible things, established by reasoning and by one's own words... what is the scripture that harms?' And in the *Tattvasaṃgraha* (Compendium of Principles), it says: 'Because there are two knowable objects, there are two valid cognitions. For the meaning of the kalpa, through one's own words, our scripture is not harmed.' etc. Isn't this identifying valid cognition that is pure through three analyses? You seem to be completely confused by these, but that is not the case. These texts are merely explaining that in order for scripture to become pure, if what it is to express has a manifest part within its scope, then it needs to be unharmed by direct perception; if there are some hidden parts, then it needs to be unharmed by inference; and when revealing very hidden things, it needs to be unharmed by one's own words, etc. In short, for pure scripture, what it is to express needs to be unharmed by the three analytical valid cognitions for the three knowable objects. If it is not like this, according to the literal meaning, in order for scripture to become pure, what it is to express needs to be unharmed by... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
