Collected Teachings of Luju Gyatso LG18 Self-Explanation from Opening the Lotus Garden 2-226 Self-Explanation from Opening the Lotus Garden Identifying the Necessity of the Basis of Qualification Homage! The occasion of 'Self-Explanation from Opening the Lotus Garden: Rays of Sunlight on Good Explanations' is here. Om Swasti Siddham. Om, may there be well-being, may there be accomplishment.) Following Maitreya's lineage, the tradition of Asanga's brothers, Dignāga and Dharmakīrti, endowed with supreme intelligence, skillfully explaining the meaning of the Buddha's scriptures, I praise Mati Vījaya, the giver! The six ornaments of Jambudvipa's throat, guarding with sharp discernment, like the Iron Staff Dharma Lord, resting on the lion throne of Nyan Yö, all upholders of reason are worthy of homage! Here, at the source of the Commentary on Valid Cognition, surpassing the intellect of other scholars, the future essence of scripture and reason, I will joyfully explain for the fortunate, intelligent, and impartial ones. Listen with delight! Thus, before making a commitment, there is praise and a vow. In the case of one 'dharma', in the context of scriptures, etc., in the first of the three ways of relating to the scriptures, when it is time to explain, this object of ability, the five-featured thesis to be proven, is the time to explain. In this explanation, there are three parts: a brief presentation of the four aspects, a detailed explanation of the two aspects, and a specific explanation of what is unclear. In the second of these, there are two parts: a detailed explanation of the intention and a self-explanation. The former has already been explained above. 2-227 Now, the latter will be explained: identifying the necessity of the basis of qualification, elaborating on the necessity of the characteristics, and summarizing the establishment of that necessity. In the former, there are 'dharma' as one entity, etc. If we combine it with the sentences, then when Master Dignāga explains the nature of the correct way to benefit others in the Compendium on Valid Cognition, the word 'self' refers to the 'dharma'. You have two necessities: in terms of exclusion, the opponent at that time has acknowledged that what is to be proven at that time is correct, excluding what is to be proven correctly for the benefit of others at that time. In terms of complete exclusion, like the 'sound' dharma, although many characteristics such as permanence, the qualities of space, and createdness, impermanence, etc., have been established in the internal and external scriptures, the opponent at that time wants to establish 'sound as impermanent'. What is to be proven at that time is correct, but the qualities of permanence, space, etc., the meaning of the scriptures that have been promised in terms of validity, are not what is to be proven at that time. It should be known that it is explained for the sake of knowing this, in the oneness of 'dharma', in the scriptures. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Even though various distinctions are made among phenomena, it is said that the aim is to accomplish the desire of self-nature, hence the word 'self-nature' is spoken.' If there are wise individuals here, they should resolve this doubt as follows: In order to make it known that the previous proponent at that time, only the desire of self-nature is the true object to be accomplished for the benefit of others at that time, then it is not necessary to explain that the word 'self' is spoken alongside it, because such a statement is already established by the mere mention of 'desire' alongside it. If asked in this way, then for such an answer, it is necessary to explain two ways of explaining that are adapted to the trainees who are to be tamed, whether they possess wisdom or not: For the group of trainees who have not engaged in deep contemplation, the previous statement alone is sufficient, because in most treatises and commentaries, it is not seen that anything more is added beyond the statement of the words of the treatise. For the excellent student who contemplates and deliberates, the previous statement is not sufficient, because no additional gain has emerged that is separate from the word 'desire'. So what should be done? Now, what needs to be explained is that there is a common need of one's own tenet and a non-common need of one's own tenet, so it is necessary to explain these needs separately. The pure ones of the previous proponents at that time, all the meanings of the scriptures other than what is desired to be accomplished at that time, Determining that it is the truth to be accomplished for the benefit of others at that time, this is common to the two needs of one's own tenet, because it is explained that this is one's own need at this time, and in 'Even if all other tenets are refuted,' it is also explained that this is the need of the word 'desire,' and in general, for the word 'oneself,' there is no need to eliminate the dissimilar kind that has not been eliminated by the word 'desire,' so the wise scholars who explain in this way are also in accordance with reality. So what is the non-common need of one's own tenet? Now, I will write the statement of extracting the essence: There is a reason for saying the word 'self-nature' next to that phrase, because even if the pure ones of the previous proponents at that time determine that all the meanings that are not desired to be accomplished at that time are the truth to be accomplished for the benefit of others at that time, even if it has already been determined by the word 'desire,' but in order to eliminate the wrong conception of whether other scriptural meanings of the treatises that the previous proponents themselves have promised as valid should also become the truth to be accomplished at that time.
