As previously stated, this is because it has already been established. Furthermore, most commentaries indicate that at that time, associating oneself with the desired characteristics, but this does not grasp the point. Because both one's own and others' expectations at that time are able to determine that examples that may become objects to be proven in the future, the non-established object to be proven is correct. In particular, in 'The Determination of Valid Cognition,' 'Here, the sounds of oneself and others, because they are associated with the endpoint that has a definite meaning, can also be understood.' This is because it ignores one's own and others' expectations among the five aspects. May the drops of blessings of the inner and outer lineages, melt into my heart, and may this well-spoken word by Nāgārjuna not be stolen and flaunted by others! Next, the necessity of characteristics is explained in detail. Refuting the other schools' view of considering the meaning of scriptures as the object to be proven. The second part is a detailed explanation, in order to establish one's own view, refuting others' misconceptions; stating the views of others, and refuting them one by one with reasoning. The first part contains two points: refuting the other schools' view of considering the meaning of scriptures as the object to be proven; refuting one's own school's view of considering the meaning of scriptures as the object to be proven. The first point also contains two points: directly stating the words and meanings of the treatise; studying the difficulties of knowledgeable scholars. The first point again contains two points: stating the arguments of foolish debaters; explaining the refutations of the rebutters. The first point is: 'If because of admitting the treatise.' and so on. Combining it with the meaning, previously, the Vaiśeṣika (particularist) debater, after admitting that the scripture of sage Kaṇāda (atom-eater) which teaches the permanence of sound is valid, said to the Sāṃkhya (enumerator) debater: 'Sound is impermanent because it is produced.' The Sāṃkhya debater replied: 'When you say that, the reason of being produced is flawed, and the impermanence of sound is also flawed.' Because the production as a reason completely contradicts the permanent space attribute on the sound. Universally, all the meanings in the Vaiśeṣika treatises about the permanent space attribute of sound must be regarded as the object to be proven at that time. Because you yourself admit that the treatise about the permanence of sound is reliable.' It is said that both debaters admitted this error. 'If because of admitting the treatise, everything is accepted, even if it completely contradicts, the reason and the commitment will become errors.' This sentence appeared. To this, in the former part of Kamalaśīla's Tattvasiddhi, the Vaiśeṣika debater... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arranged in this way, the Sāṃkhya says, 'In this way, to point out the faults of the Sāṃkhya,' this is presented as a prerequisite by the Sāṃkhya. Jñānaśrī says, 'Arranged in this way by the Vaiśeṣika, the critic points out the faults in this way,' this is presented as a prerequisite by the critic. There is no contradiction between the two. Second, to refute it, the reasoning of refutation is explained in detail. This is a summary of the key points of that reasoning. The first part has four aspects: If it contradicts the scriptures, then refuting the reasoning becomes a fault; if it contradicts the scriptures, then refuting the commitment becomes a fault; to prove what is to be proven, scriptures are needed as proof; all the meanings of the scriptures become too absolute as what is to be proven. The first part includes: the true nature of overly absolute reasoning; and successively refuting its erroneous justifications. The first part is: If the Vaiśeṣika says, 'Sound (śabda) is the subject, it is impermanent, because it is created.' Then, because the reason 'created' is to refute that the smell is a permanent attribute of earth, proving that sound is impermanent from the reason 'created' would become a contradictory reason. Even if it harms the smell being a permanent attribute of earth, it would become refuting the meaning of the scriptures of the treatise you have committed to, because in the treatise of the Kaṇāda, sound is said to be a permanent attribute of space, smell is a permanent attribute of earth, taste is a permanent attribute of water, touch is a permanent attribute of wind, and color is a permanent attribute of fire. Smell is to refute the attribute of earth, so the reasoning becomes contradictory. If the Sāṃkhya says, 'When the Vaiśeṣika says that sound is the subject, it is impermanent because it is created. If the permanent smell is refuted on sound, then you are right, but that is not what is being refuted,' if you think like that, that is also being refuted, because by refuting the pervasive permanence on sound, the pervasive smell etc. are also refuted, which is the view of the wise. This needs to be remembered. Second, successively refuting its erroneous justifications, they say, 'Because the reason 'created' refutes the smell being a permanent attribute of earth, proving that sound is impermanent from the reason 'created' would not become a contradictory reason, because the smell being a permanent attribute of earth is not the subject of the occasion of proving that sound is permanent from the reason 'created',' if you say that, then the reason 'created' refuting the attribute of sound being a permanent attribute of space would also not become a contradictory reason in that aspect, because the other attribute of sound being a permanent attribute of space is the same as the subject of the occasion of proving that sound is impermanent from the reason 'created'. It is explained that, 'Because the occasion is not appropriate, if not, then that is the same for others too'. If they say, 'These two are not the same, the attribute of permanent space is the sound's -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ྱད་ཆོས་ཡིན་པས། 2-238
